23:58:25 <Kevin L> Welcome to another day in the Twilight Zone.
00:02:01 <Dave from B> Morning Kevin
00:02:42 <Dave from B> Maybe we should have a lottery for who can guess closest to when we will see the light again
00:04:44 <Kevin L> By day or year?
00:06:35 <ynpvisitor71> I was under the clearly mistaken impression that there was a statement about no interruption to the viewing....
00:06:45 <Kevin L> My fear is Giantess will erupt before this gets "fixed".
00:07:24 <Kevin L> I think I read that somewhere too.
00:07:56 <Kevin L> That stunning Electric Peak cam is working.....
00:13:14 <Dave from B> A nice lesson for those involved to never promise something like no interuption.
00:17:36 <Kevin L> Always give the worst case. If it does come to pass, people expect it. If thing work out, you look like a hero. I learned that in road construction.
00:18:30 <Dave from B> Exactly
00:19:04 <Kevin L> At least here all you get is angry emails. Working in the road I got hit with everything from rocks, to bottles, to dirty baby diapers.
00:20:14 <Dave from B> Why would people throw things at you? Some people are so stupid.
00:23:15 <Kevin L> They get frustrated because of the delays. Bright colored vests and hats are targets.
00:23:42 <Kevin L> I even had a few friends who got shot at.
00:24:35 <Kevin L> Had one time a truck came through and had the choice to run me over or the guy in the other lane. He hit the guy in the other lane.
00:26:43 <Paul> Morning
00:27:20 <Paul> ahhh yes the black abyss
00:49:21 <Kevin L> Must be Cave Geyser.
00:51:10 <Kevin L> From the update page: "Our existing streaming webcam is showing its age, and our goal is to replace it with a new one, without any disruption in service. The new webcam will offer a clearer image, and we think you will like it."
00:51:22 <Kevin L> I don't think I like it.
00:53:00 <Dave from B> It would be nice if they posted a new update on their web page
00:53:30 <Kevin L> For sure!
00:57:08 <ynpvisitor82> I thought they did - Maureen posted something on FB last nite
00:57:46 <Kevin L> Iceland still works:
00:57:48 <Kevin L> http://www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/geysir/
00:59:42 <Kevin L> And for those who want to see water going the "wrong" way:
00:59:44 <Kevin L> http://www.yosemiteconservancy.org/webcams/yosemite-falls#.U3yxIdJdUVh
01:01:08 <ynpvisitor87> From the park on Facebook: To all our webcam lovers: the live feed from Old Faithful will be back soon, and the image will be sharper than ever.
01:01:40 <ynpvisitor87> Proof is in the pudding.
01:15:50 <Kent> I see we are still touring Marmot Cave.
01:17:28 <Dave from B> Morning Jenna
01:17:47 <Jenna> morning Dave
01:17:56 <Dave from B> It's been 239 days since Billings last reached 75. We will get there multiple times this week!:)
01:18:49 <Jenna> sounds beautiful
01:20:14 <Jenna> a little warm for us today, high of 86
01:20:54 <Kevin L> It is cold here today, but it appears to be the last of it until late Fall.
01:21:38 <Jenna> what do you mean by cold? :)
01:21:55 <Kevin L> First time I have seen wind listed as calm for a long time.
01:22:33 <Kevin L> It is 59 right now and hit 55 last night. Mid 100s forecast for next week.
01:23:12 <Jenna> that is cold for you
01:23:13 <Kevin L> Considering in 2 months our lows will be mid 90s, that is cold!
01:25:30 <Jenna> no heat index for us yet so I'm happy. We're trying not to turn the ac on though so that's tough to keep the house cool.
01:55:12 <Kevin L> I have a swamp cooler I use in the shop that will blow you out of the place. It also has an AC unit for the days it is too humid or I just want to use the living portion as a den. House has 2 AC units.
01:56:53 <Dave from B> I couldn't imagine trying to sleep at night and not be able to open your windows.
01:58:37 <Kevin L> If you opened your windows here at night you probably wouldn't sleep!
01:59:57 <Kevin L> If you use a swamp cooler you do open your windows. You need to let the humid escape or it doesn't work too well. That is why it is nice in the shop. I can open the garage door and it stays cool. Also makes a good wind tunnel for model rocket testing!
02:00:16 <Jenna> intereting Kevin
02:00:56 <Jenna> it is nice at night once it cools down. we've had the windows open a lot. But with a two story old house the upstairs needs a window ac in the summer.
02:28:31 <Kevin L> Upstairs usually do. The heat from the bottom comes up and the heat from the sun in the attic comes down. Attics can get really hot and can hit 200 degrees here. When I use the swamp coolers I have things called Updux the open when the swamper is on and vent through the attic. That way instead of blowing out a window. it sends 80 degree air to the attic instead of 110 degree.
02:39:06 <Dave from B> In 12 days, I will be sleeping on the ground floor for the first time in 24 years. I can't wait to escape the heat of the second floor.
03:00:56 <Jenna> yeah that is why I want to buy a ranch house
03:04:11 <Jenna> sounds pretty efficient Kevin
03:04:27 <Jenna> I'm considering something a little less expensive....another box fan
03:06:41 <Dave from B> In our old house, every bedroom had a portable fan in it during the summer
03:07:52 <Dave from B> Now, all the kids rooms will be in the basement
03:10:44 <Eric> hello all...
03:16:48 <Dave from B> Morning Eric
03:21:04 <Eric> I see the watch continues....
03:23:10 <lc> hey everyone
03:23:20 <Dave from B> Hi, lc
03:23:27 <Eric> My guess is they didn't realize how big of a change it would be to go from analog signal to digital from the tree to the camera shop.
03:24:01 <lc> I have one question, if they were not ready why did they take the old cam down?
03:24:45 <Eric> Probably because they didn't know what they were doing.
03:24:46 <Dave from B> I don't think they realized it wouldn't work right away.
03:25:55 <Dave from B> It sure would be nice to know what they are doing.
03:26:09 <lc> they could bring the old cam back on line until they figure out the problem.
03:26:42 <lc> oh well I'm going to mow.
03:26:44 <Dave from B> Unless they are "rewiring" from cam to building
03:27:00 <Dave from B> lc, we all miss our geysers.
03:27:06 <lc> just my gripe for the day.
03:27:10 <Dave from B> Just a little over a month!
03:27:28 <lc> check back later.....
03:27:40 <Dave from B> Have a good day
03:45:09 <Dave from B> Morning kc
03:45:51 <kc (working)> hi Dave
04:02:31 <Eric> The YellowstoneNPS facebook page is full of people asking when the camera will be back online :-) I threw in one more request, just so no voice goes un-heard.
04:02:51 <Eric> Their canned answer is "soon"....which means they don't know.
04:04:08 <Eric> Have we heard from anybody in the park about seeing any active work being done?
05:42:57 <Dave from B> zz
05:52:44 <Dave from B> Hi, Kent
05:52:49 <Kent> I see BiS is back at Norris.
05:52:54 <Kent> Hey Dave
05:53:15 <Dave from B> Yes, he is. Vixen is goin' crazy
05:53:45 <Kent> It is a shame the government can't be a careful with nuclear secrets as they are with UGB cam info.
05:54:02 <Dave from B> :D
05:54:38 <Kent> Lunch over. Back to work. Madison Junction the evening of the 24th.
05:54:49 <Dave from B> Have fun! Be safe
06:34:34 <Kevin L> .
07:31:27 <Dave from B> BHI 1425
07:32:07 <Dave from B> WE've only missed 17 GT eruptions today
07:34:01 <Betty> Hi Dave
07:35:13 <Betty> What happened to F&M? No reports yet
07:39:22 <Dave from B> Hi, Betty
07:39:34 <Dave from B> River levels are too high for F&M right now
07:40:02 <Dave from B> With the slow snowmelt so far, it could be July before we see it
07:42:31 <Betty> Ahhh, got it. Good to know that. Thanks Dave :-)
07:43:45 <Betty> I'm heading out. Have a great day.
07:43:52 <kc (working)> see side chat Betty
07:45:52 <Dave from B> Bye, Betty
07:50:23 <Kevin L> Bye Betty.
07:53:14 <Betty> Hey Kevin
07:56:08 <Kevin L> Wish we had some geysers for you.
07:56:59 <Betty> :-(
07:57:23 <Dave from B> Maybe Paul should start running youtibe geysers videos on this page
07:58:13 <Betty> The good news: the geysers are still there, we only can't See them
07:59:37 <Dave from B> Maybe Yellowstone really did blow up.
08:01:57 <Craig> Woah guys! Shutdown geyser MAJOR!
08:02:16 <Craig> There hasn't been a major since october!
08:03:28 <Betty> Bye all !
08:30:45 <Dave from B> Time to go home. Have a great evneing everyone!
08:33:51 <Paul> Hi guys
08:34:01 <Paul> I see nothing has chaned
08:34:07 <Paul> changed
08:46:04 <Eric> Nope...still a black hole, with the park service saying "soon", whatever that means.
08:50:57 <Paul> When they get around to it
08:51:10 <Paul> thats what soon means
08:52:45 <Eric> I have asked YPF to give an update, as it seems to be technically their sponsored project.
08:54:15 <Eric> Is there a geyser gazer forum or email list that contains more long term communications?
09:44:47 <ynpvisitor75> Eric, there's a listserv if that's what your wondering about.
09:52:00 <Eric> Yep 75, that is what I am looking for...are you referring to the GOSA one?
09:52:12 <ynpvisitor75> yes
09:53:25 <Eric> cool, I just subscribed...thank you.
09:53:38 <ynpvisitor75> no problem.
10:02:11 <Eric> Hey, I just got this reply from NPS via Facebook: "We are currently testing and hope to launch the new video stream very soon. Holdups have included a troublesome T1 line, an install that required a bucket lift (none exists at Old Faithful), a few glitches configuring the camera, and the fact that integrating the new feed into our website requires the assistance of a very busy national web team.."
10:03:17 <ynpvisitor75> thanks for digging Eric.
10:03:29 <ynpvisitor75> Now we just need to get the thing online.
10:03:44 <ynpvisitor75> I'm curious as to just "how" Hi-Def it is.
10:06:09 <Eric> They can ramp it up to 1080P
10:06:56 <Eric> kc shared the new model # and I looked it up. The other HUGE advantage this new camera will have is it's low light capability.
10:07:21 <ynpvisitor75> I can't begin to imagine how awesome this is going to be.
10:07:27 <ynpvisitor75> and how "low light" is low light?
10:07:39 <ynpvisitor75> are we talking full moon would illuminate enough for us to see on streaming?
10:07:49 <ynpvisitor75> because that would be great.
10:08:38 <Eric> Here is a link to the camera: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/895658-REG/Canon_6812B002_VB_H41_Full_HD.html/?m=Y&gclid=CMDL8bn9rr4CFYJqfgodLqQAIw
10:09:24 <Eric> I would guess zoomed all the way out, on a clear night and full moon, you could probably see pretty well.
10:09:33 <ynpvisitor75> wow, that's Nifty, thanks.
10:09:45 <ynpvisitor75> Looking forward to finally seeing it in action.
10:10:28 <Eric> Here is a quote from their feature list: "In even the most challenging low light conditions, indoors or outside at night, the camera delivers clear videos."
10:11:00 <ynpvisitor75> *thumbs up*
10:11:07 <Eric> it is definitely the most top of the line, current security camera out there that canon offers.
10:12:40 <Eric> It also has a microphone input...would be incredible if they added a shotgun mic to it :-P
10:13:57 <ynpvisitor75> I'm not sure if there would be a point, I think the most you would get would be wind noise
10:15:00 <Eric> true...might all wash out :-(
10:15:18 <Eric> I still don't get how they are going to let people control this camera though...
10:15:48 <ynpvisitor75> They're supposedly training them.
10:16:48 <Eric> Is that already happening?
10:17:11 <ynpvisitor22> Holy cow! Night vision? Maybe? A dream come true!
10:17:21 <ynpvisitor75> Not night vision.
10:17:41 <ynpvisitor75> We probably still wouldn't be able to see when the moon wasn't full, but MAYBE when the moon was full we would have enough light to get a picture.
10:17:44 <ynpvisitor75> We can hope though.
10:17:46 <ynpvisitor22> .02 lux is REALLY dark
10:18:27 <Eric> Yep, that is quite dark...the previous streaming cam died out at .75 lux
10:19:04 <ynpvisitor22> So essentially night vision with the exception of new moons or extremely overcast
10:19:09 <ynpvisitor75> wow
10:20:14 <ynpvisitor22> A shotgun mic would be awesome
10:20:36 <ynpvisitor22> You could probably get a wireless one but it would have to be waterproof haha
10:21:59 <Eric> here is a good link to see comparison of lux levels: http://ipvm.com/report/how_lowering_light_levels_impact_quality
10:23:41 <Eric> Actually wikipedia has a nice lux level with different moon scenarios: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lux
10:24:09 <Eric> moonless clear night .002 lux
10:25:08 <ynpvisitor75> wow, that really would be impressive.
10:26:27 <Eric> well, I have asked NPS for the streaming link, even if they haven't finished building the page yet. Said I would help them test if necessary :-P
10:29:08 <ynpvisitor75> haha, I doubt it, I think they will keep it to the current cam ops
10:34:22 <Kevin L> To quote the update page: "The new webcam is a HD camera and the resolution we've selected based on our available bandwidth is a lot better that what we have now. The picture size will be larger and clearer." I am guessing this means we will NOT be getting 1080i.
10:34:23 <Eric> I don't want to control it...I just want the feed url so I can view the video signal. According to the NPS person, they have to get nation NPS web team to update the web page with a new player.
10:36:08 <Kevin L> The current feed goes over the national NPS feed. I think this one uses more than they have setup right now.
10:42:41 <Eric> It's a trade off between FPS, quality, and size....It will be interesting to see where they land
10:43:40 <Eric> I hope we have someone who knows what they are doing setting up the camera...because choosing the right recipe can make a world of difference in the viewing experience.
10:44:16 <Eric> I deal in technology and video every day as part of my job....so I have a pretty good working background.
10:45:51 <Eric> not sure what other services need to use that T1 line they run this feed across, but if they can utilize most of the 1.5Mb bandwidth, they can have a pretty nice feed.
13:41:33 <ynpvisitor46> It was a dark and stormy night......
