05:30:29 <Kevin L™> Very fluffy!

05:35:03 <Eric> Nice to show up and have grand :-)

05:50:31 <Kevin L™> Morning Eric
05:54:24 <ynpvisitor58> OF
06:32:51 <Kevin L™> Well done today Mike?
06:33:57 <Mike J> The cool-off has begun. A mere 113 today
06:34:27 <Kevin L™> Nice!
06:34:55 <Mike J> Unfortunately, back to 117 tomorrow
06:36:01 <Mike J> Biggest issue. On the 119 day, we started having electrical problems at our house. Three times during the day, lost power.
06:36:07 <Kevin L™> Neighborhood station hit 118° yesterday. Not sure what the official was.
06:36:23 <Mike J> Electrician finally was able to get it fixed for us yesterday.
06:37:17 <Mike J> I know you guys are like us - heat is what we have to put up with. But this many days over 110 is a bit much.
06:37:18 <Kevin L™> Probably overload on the system. I think the power company shuts down areas so they don't crash the whole system.
06:38:21 <Kevin L™> Yep. For us it is inside and night activiy for those days just like the cold people do when they get those big storms.
06:38:37 <Mike J> The problem was our fuse box, put together so there was an occassional short in the system. Never buy a house that was owned by a contractor.
06:40:21 <Kevin L™> I had mine short out shortly after I bought the house. They patched it up but when I added the depot I had them put in a whole new box.
06:41:08 <Mike J> You wouldn't believe the shortcuts this guy used, including not putting termite protection underneath the wood floors.
06:42:50 <Kevin L™> Unreal. When I built the depot I did a lot of work myself. I told the inspector if he saw me doing something stupid PLEASE tell me. I want to do this right. He said he didn't hear that very often!
06:43:44 <Kevin L™> I guess this guy just wanted to turn it over and do another and pocket the change so he didn't care.
06:44:33 <Mike J> Actually, they had lived in the house for quite a while. Its a little like the old line about the cobbler's children having bad shoes.
06:45:05 <Mike J> It is amazing how many do not have your attitude.
06:50:35 <Kevin L™> Being a construction inspector for 30 years I can tell you stories.
06:51:27 <Kevin L™> Then you do have some of those golden gems that are just totally awesome people and you can do work on a handshake.
06:52:12 <Mike J> I've definitely met those in my life. A bit cliche but, it makes you believe in humanity again.
06:55:08 <Kevin L™> There was one guy, Art Goldstrom that was doing demolition for us once. Across the street there was an older gentleman trying to dig a large elm tree stump out of his yard. Art told me to have him stop digging and he would get it with his tractor. Not only did he pull the stump, he put it in his dump truck and hauled it off. He also brought in dirt and leveled the yard.
06:55:32 <Kevin L™> Did it all just as a service to his fellow man.

08:12:51 <Eric> Guess not...just a dwarf in the background.
08:21:41 <Casey> Hi Eric
08:21:54 <Eric> Hi Casey
08:23:22 <Casey> I'm still hearing the old chime. Did you change it back?
08:23:37 <Eric> Nope
08:24:04 <Eric> I never really changed it...just converted it to mp3
08:26:33 <Casey> Ok. I thought you were going to change it to that different sound. Nevermind.
08:27:12 <Eric> I thought about it...but didn't want to just go and change something for not reason :-)
08:27:19 <ynpvisitor58> Eric, in chrome, linux mint my chime has always been intermitant (only get it about every 5th post) this happened even before your changes. Any ideas?
08:27:20 <Eric> no reason
08:28:01 <ynpvisitor58> sorry gtg bbl
08:28:19 <Eric> The chat uses some algorithmic activity tracker to determine if it should ring the sound...probably sucks like many other things in phpfreechat :-P
08:30:29 <Kent> Checked with two women wearing green and gray. Innards of cell tower updated twice and it still can't begin to keep up. They had no idea of future plans.

08:32:21 <Casey> Received
08:32:34 <Eric> But the other thing is I removed the flash based sound alert and replaced it with a modern audio embed. The sound "should" be more reliable and does NOT require flash to be running on your browser.
08:33:09 <Kevin L™> Lucky group coming down.
08:33:20 <ynpvisitor63> sound is there but quality is really bad
08:34:00 <Eric> Interesting...are you on a windows machine 63?
08:34:15 <ynpvisitor63> linux
08:34:18 <Casey> I wonder if flash was running some equalization behind the scenes
08:35:10 <Eric> You can checkout the sound file that is playing directly here:
08:35:32 <Eric> No idea why your computer would be trashing the sound quality.
08:35:50 <Eric> Pretty some minor detail that non-audio guy doesn't understand :-P
08:36:05 <Eric> Probably...not Pretty...wth
08:36:22 <Eric> I can't even blame autocorrect
08:36:27 <ynpvisitor63> sounds like an overly compressed file -- nyquist problems
08:36:46 <Casey> It's not chiming for me now either (like 58 mentioned earlier). I hadn't noticed that before unless the window wasn't in focus.
08:36:49 <Eric> I am just exporting it through audacity and it sounds great here
08:37:07 <Eric> It shouldn't chime if window is focues
08:37:10 <Eric> focused
08:37:17 <Eric> Big splash

08:38:07 <Casey> Ok. To be continued with the chime conversation
08:38:48 <Eric> Glad other nerds are hear to help me :-)
08:39:13 <Eric> here...ugg. more coffee needed
08:39:35 <ynpvisitor24> Well this is going to mess with my lunch plans
08:39:37 <ynpvisitor28> I thought you made a nice pun
08:39:41 <Eric> That is a nice looking Beee
08:40:11 <ynpvisitor24> My computer still does not like the beep
08:40:37 <Eric> Yes, the beep is going to need some adjustments.
08:40:40 <Mike J> Eric, agree with 28, "hear" was appropriate in this conversation
08:40:57 <ynpvisitor28> yes, it sounded good
08:41:14 <Casey> Difficult to see the water, but Bee sure looked tall today
08:41:22 <ynpvisitor24> What we need is something like the sound people make when grand goes. kind of a big whooo
08:42:04 <Eric> I thought about that 24...and actually grabbed a few geyser eruption sound samples. But I don't think they would make good short alert sounds.
08:42:14 <ynpvisitor24> Or some mud pot blurps
08:42:33 <Eric> But I am open to anything if we can agree on a sound and someone provides the mp3
08:43:02 <ynpvisitor24> I veto Kevin snoring
08:43:11 <Eric> haha
08:43:59 <ynpvisitor24> well that was fun.
08:44:22 <Eric> I am gettting the alerts pretty consistently now when not on this tab in chrome.
08:44:27 <ynpvisitor63> Eric -- look at the spectrum (Analyze/Plot Spectrum) The high frequency content in the 4000 Hz and above range is what I'm talking about.
08:45:00 <Eric> PM me 63 and I will send you the original swf audio file to look at
08:46:52 <Kevin L™> Good steam engine whistle would be nice....
08:48:30 <ynpvisitor24> Any of these. Don't have time to pull it and edit for one good plop.
08:48:39 <Casey> It would be nice to have event specific alerts instead of just the single alert. (Granted, right now the only event being tracked is the arrival of a new message.)
08:59:18 <ynpvisitor24> Actually, I would like only an alert for something special. Just messages can get overwhelming when multitasking and people are chatty.
08:59:30 <ynpvisitor24> Like a beep button.
08:59:38 <ynpvisitor24> Easy to push when needed.
09:01:11 <Casey> I thought about that 24. Then I thought about some random person coming in and triggering chimes endlessly just to be a pain.
09:01:20 <Eric> Yes, alerts are always a very personal thing. I have run into this many times in my professional life :-)
09:01:38 <ynpvisitor28> it should know the things that I want to be notified of and it should know if I heard it or not then repeat it
09:04:28 <ynpvisitor24> 2 things on the hooligan beeper. We can always turn it off. Or better would be to hide it some place not so obvious.
09:05:16 <Eric> Ok...try this audio and see how it sounds:
09:06:30 <ynpvisitor24> Has a crackle in it for me. When i play it over it sounds like 2 beeps with a crackle.
09:08:54 <Eric> Ok...try this second one and see which one sounds better to most:
09:10:22 <Eric> CAstle
09:11:11 <ynpvisitor24> 2
09:15:09 <Eric> test?
09:15:55 <Casey> Even for me the second one sounds cleaner
09:16:33 <Eric> The second one is now the default sound here
09:16:40 <Eric> That is the one 63 converted for me
09:16:53 <Eric> Thanks 63 :-D
09:17:24 <ynpvisitor63> you're welcome
09:17:34 <Casey> I'm a little surprised by the low sample and bit rates, but for something that simple it should be fine.
09:18:01 <Eric> chat is acting weird now :-(
09:18:43 <ynpvisitor24> computer still does not like the sound if it was changed. But I can live with it.
09:19:12 <Eric2> Hmmm, clearing my cache fixed things

10:46:54 <Casey> It's probably just wishful thinking on my part
10:47:04 <Eric> maybe bowl, cup or saucer
10:47:07 <Casey> It erupted for me yesterday during a slow period
10:47:34 <Kevin L™> Udo just posted Beach. That was probably the steam.
10:47:53 <Eric> is beach out near aurum?
10:47:53 <Art> I only had to wait about 15 minutes for Aurum last week :)
10:48:03 <Art> Sorry to brag, I was as surprised as anyone
10:48:17 <Eric> Yes, we were really surprised by your aurum post...thought it was great!
10:48:53 <Kevin L™> Nice to get one of those.
10:49:28 <Casey> Beach is left of Aurum from this perspective, but not by much
10:51:24 <Kevin L™> I saw it yesterday but OF went and covered it

10:58:11 <Eric> Nice

10:58:44 <Casey> Thanks Art. Nice video
10:59:22 <Kevin L™> Good to see it.
10:59:40 <Kevin L™> OK, keep your eyes on it for the next few minutes.
11:00:20 <ynpvisitor19> very cool videos. thanks
11:01:20 <Jimbo Silicon> In other news, I just read through the Smithsonian weekly volcano report. Planet-wise, it's pretty quiet. Fuego in Guatemala is one of the more active right now.
11:07:39 <Art> This was the highlight of the trip from a gazing perspective
11:07:50 <Art> No indy bee with double rainbow, it was pretty amazing
11:07:51 <Art>
11:08:20 <Eric> That is an awesome shot!
11:09:01 <ynpvisitor58> shotgreat shot
11:11:06 <ynpvisitor58> Great shot, good work, I 'm hopeful to get a picture like that someday
11:12:19 <Kevin L™> No Aurum?
11:15:37 <Kevin L™> Great pic Art. Not often do get a full rainbow on BH.
11:18:28 <Art> Thanks. It was eventually a double rainbow for that matter, but was hard to capture on camera
11:18:58 <Art> Double rainbow guy jokes were made :)
11:29:45 <Kevin L™> Turban
11:34:43 <Eric> haha..kevin I now get advertisements for Bears in area signs when surfing the web :-P
11:34:51 <Eric> All thanks to you...
11:37:47 <Kevin L™> That is funny. Those are some good signs. They meet the criteria for roadsigns but you can get the bike path ones for your walls and they are not expensive. You cn do custom signs too. I like the alien crossing sign.

11:49:33 <Jimbo Silicon> Casey, you got the stopwatch?
11:50:00 <Casey> Yeah. 2m now.
11:50:20 <Jimbo Silicon> Two thumbs up
11:54:17 <Jimbo Silicon> Need a little more wind to push the steam off the jets
11:55:00 <Casey> 7m
11:55:09 <Eric> Still looking pretty nice
11:55:34 <Jimbo Silicon> I'm quibbling
11:55:51 <Casey> I think the wind picked up for you, Jimbo
11:56:00 <Casey> 8m
11:56:07 <Eric> quibbling is ok :-D
11:56:58 <Casey> The single burst eruptions have looked impressive on the webcam of late
11:57:01 <Casey> 9m
11:57:17 <Jimbo Silicon> Once on July 4th I was directly downwind of the fireworks. All I saw was smoke and sparks
11:57:29 <Eric> uggg, that would suck
11:57:45 <Eric> lesson learned hopefully :-D
11:57:56 <Jimbo Silicon> Yeah, Grand always puts on a good show, multiple-bursts are cake
11:58:00 <Casey> 10m. Looks like first burst still
11:58:04 <Jimbo Silicon> Regarding fireworks - yes
11:58:19 <Jimbo Silicon> But I was in a city - couldn't reposition
11:58:46 <Eric> looks like wind totally stalled
11:58:47 <Casey> Pause at ~10m40s maybe
11:59:13 <Eric> 1 and done I think
11:59:20 <Casey> I think so too

11:59:51 <Jimbo Silicon> GT is fast in the summer.
11:59:56 <Casey> That's a fast post. Makes me wonder if I'm delayed a little more than usual.
12:00:14 <Eric> Nah, they could probably see the end before us
12:00:27 <Eric> and good timing on the syncs :-D
12:00:49 <Casey> I'm on the RTMP stream, so it should be very low latency
12:01:13 <Eric> yes, but sometimes the flash can drop frames and cause delays
12:01:24 <Eric> over long periods of time
12:02:48 <ynpvisitor2> SteveO is really fast at entering. he may have been prepared ahead of time with is finger over the "submit" button
12:02:50 <Eric> It's inherent in the protocol...dump stuff if you can't handle it.
12:03:37 <Casey> Good point, 2. Other than the Q he would have had a pretty good idea what to post.
12:04:03 <Casey> Oops. I left the timer running. 16m if anyone cares.
12:04:17 <ynpvisitor2> a new world record!
12:04:34 <ynpvisitor2> historically I don't think that is a record though for Grand
12:05:03 <Casey> I've read some crazy stuff about Grand durations and burst counts (I believe from the old Haynes guides)
12:07:25 <ynpvisitor2> Plate maybe ?
12:10:12 <Casey> "The outbursts of the Grand are among the finest to be witnessed in the Park, having a series of eight to twelve distinct eruptions, lasting from twenty to thirty minutes, and throwing at each discharge forked columns of water to a height of 200 feet"
12:10:29 <Casey> Yellowstone Park guide -Albert Brewer Guptill
12:11:29 <Eric> 8-12 eruptions! I want that...
12:14:10 <ynpvisitor2> OK but what if you have to wait 2 weeks between eruptions?
12:15:21 <Casey>
12:15:49 <Casey> That resource has an interval of 9 to 30 hours
12:16:44 <Casey> It seems to describe a different relationship between Turban and Grand though. Curious.
12:16:45 <Eric> hmmm 30 hours for an 8-12 eruption grand...or 5 1 eruption grands in that same amount of time.
12:17:18 <Eric> As long as grand was predictable still, I would take the 8-12 bursts.
12:18:05 <Casey> For something that spectacular, 30 hours sounds short
12:24:30 <Casey> I wonder about the reliability of some of these older sources. Has there been confusion about Daisy and Splendid in the history of the park? That resource discusses Splendid but makes it sound like it could easily be Daisy. I wonder if descriptions of the two got mixed up early on. The picture is clearly Splendid though.
12:25:30 <Casey> Actually the more I look at it, it might be a picture of daisy from an angle where you can't see it's tilt
12:26:49 <Eric> facebook people could probably answer those questions Casey
12:27:49 <Casey> Not a bad idea
12:29:05 <Casey> OF or massive preplay
12:29:21 <Casey> Has to be ie now
13:13:07 <Kevin L™> You know you are a burned out old codger when you go to sleep during Grand!
13:13:41 <Kevin L™> What is amazing is Aurm didn't go (that we know of) while I was out.
13:14:28 <Kevin L™> Looks like the Brian Head fire is really getting bad:
13:27:08 <Eric> It will be interesting to see how the federal government response to fires this year.
13:27:29 <Eric> Hopefully we have enough crews to deal with them.
13:29:03 <ynpvisitor81> Brian Head is bad since it is in a narrow steep canyon. Wind will go up that like a fireplace flue.
13:30:12 <ynpvisitor81> Those pictures look a lot like Yellowstone 88.
13:30:31 <Eric> Yes, currently it looks like they are just letting it burn...probably setting really wide fire lines.
13:36:06 <ynpvisitor81> They are aggressively fighting it, but the terrain is terrible. It may burn the whole town. I am surprised they are using DC 10s on it. Pampers time for the pilots.
13:36:41 <Eric> It went from 15% contained to 5% contained....not sure how aggressive that is.
13:39:13 <ynpvisitor81> It's the fire that is aggressive.
13:39:29 <Eric> ohh, yes, for sure.
13:40:57 <ynpvisitor81> Temps there over 100 with humidity in single digits. Winds gusting to 55. Not a lot you can do.
13:42:11 <Eric> Nope...other than build fire lines in manageable areas.
13:43:13 <ynpvisitor81> That is near Cedar Breaks so it may get that too.
13:46:15 <ynpvisitor81> This area is amazing they built a ski resort. Very steep sides and very narrow. The road going to it is about a 12% grade.
13:52:42 <Eric> looks like a cool location...never spent much time in utah
13:53:11 <Eric> It's on my bucket list to travel the SW part of the US
13:54:56 <ynpvisitor81> Utah has some awesome places. I really like Bryce Canyon.
13:56:57 <ynpvisitor81> Lot of good smaller areas too like Snows Canyon and Pine Valley near Saint George.
13:58:10 <ynpvisitor81> Looks like Dave is a bit cooler than he thought today but it is warming tomorrow.
14:00:12 <Eric> OF
14:11:37 <ynpvisitor63> Splendid can do what was reported in that book.
14:50:30 <Casey> Thanks 63.
14:59:34 <ynpvisitor63> There were periods during Spendid's activity in the 1990s that a "casual observer" might have described the activity in a manner very similar to what was written in the book. They wouldn't have been correct but they would have been close enough for most tourists.
15:02:47 <ynpvisitor63> That said, historically there was confusion between Daisy, Comet and Splendid. I think it was Paul Strasser that wrote an article about it for GOSA.

19:40:55 <Kevin L™> Hows the new car working?
19:41:13 <ynpvisitor63> great
19:41:29 <ynpvisitor63> Did I hear you got a new one too?
19:42:30 <Kevin L™> It has been so hot I haven't even been looking for one to replace mine. My wife has hers in Boise so I have been on foot for 3 days anyway.
19:44:19 <ynpvisitor63> on foot in that heat is dangerous. What are you at now? 107?
19:44:24 <Kevin L™> Lion.
19:44:44 <ynpvisitor63> minor
19:47:01 <Kevin L™> Yep. Yesterday it was 118° and Monday 119°. I have just been working on stuff on the inside this week and watching videos that my wife hates.
19:47:36 <ynpvisitor63> good times
19:47:43 <Kevin L™> Supposed to cool off to the mid 110s next week which is more normal.
19:48:58 <ynpvisitor63> here in Seattle we're all about to die. It is supposed to reach 90 tomorrow. When I first moved here I had people warn me not to walk outside when it got into the 80s.
19:49:13 <ynpvisitor63> just too hot
19:52:15 <ynpvisitor1> Kevin, can not find the log on the simple page. Did you answer the nascar question about cash earlier?
19:52:45 <ynpvisitor1> Are we missing a lion?
19:53:00 <Kevin L™> I just got back on. Didn't see it. What was it?
19:53:47 <Kevin L™> There was a minor Lion just a bit back. I think DaveM posted it.
19:53:50 <ynpvisitor1> Why does a nascar crew chief need a large amount of cash at a race?
19:54:12 <ynpvisitor63> there was a second minor at 2152
19:54:25 <ynpvisitor1> Sounds fishy to me, no Dave pun intended.
19:54:40 <ynpvisitor1> Thanks for the lion info
19:56:19 <Kevin L™> I am not sure. Nascar pays for the gas and I think Goodyear has accounts for the tires. Crash parts should be an item they stock on the crash cart.
19:56:51 <ynpvisitor1> You hear about chad getting robbed?
19:57:21 <ynpvisitor1> The cash could explain all those wins.
19:57:36 <Kevin L™> No, I hadn't. When did that happen?
19:57:42 <ynpvisitor1> Not saying he would cheat
19:57:50 <ynpvisitor1> This week in San fran
19:58:09 <ynpvisitor1> Not like he has been caught or anything
19:59:16 <ynpvisitor1> We will never know as I am sure they can replace the cash before the race starts and they need it.
19:59:34 <Kevin L™> Someone from Nascar cheat???!!!! Never heard of such a thing!
19:59:56 <ynpvisitor1> This could bring it to a new level.
20:01:17 <ynpvisitor1> Inquiring minds could put him in the same spot as Pate Rose
20:01:48 <Kevin L™> I think my favorite was the guy that seemed to go father on a run between pits than all the others. They finally found that he has a fuel line long enough that it held about 5 gallons of gas. ?They never had a rule about how big you gas line could be!
20:02:51 <ynpvisitor1> I doubt the France family would put gambling or bribery in the same box as "detrimental to stock car racing"
20:03:42 <ynpvisitor1> Think chad will give any reporter the chance to ask what he needed the cash for?
20:04:43 <ynpvisitor1> So you are batching it this week?
20:05:01 <Kevin L™> Just getting a room there could require a lot of cash, but they could put that on a card.
20:06:33 <Kevin L™> Yep. Even dealing with the heat is MUCH better than going to a wedding. I wouldn't mind tomorrow since they are going to Rexburg to see my daughter.
20:06:43 <ynpvisitor1> Talk about room rent. Just talked to a mom whose kid got offered a job there. 2500 for a studio and 5 grand for a 2 bedroom apartment. Can not see it myselfe.
20:06:57 <ynpvisitor1> Spit cone looks hot
20:07:05 <Kevin L™> I have got to watch a few good movies that I haven't seen for a while though.
20:07:26 <Kevin L™> I was wondering what that was! I hadn't even thought of split cone.
20:08:04 <ynpvisitor1> You do a good mac & cheese?
20:08:36 <ynpvisitor1> Or you cheat and eat all the goodies you can not when she is home? I will never tell
20:09:47 <Kevin L™> For the most part I do a lot of the cooking since my wife is at work. I do great buttermilk biscuits, dinner rolls, roasts, Sweedish meatballs, baked beans, and other things.
20:10:47 <ynpvisitor63> can I come over. sounds good
20:11:21 <ynpvisitor1> Your mom taught you well. I know men who would starve if it were not for take out or restaurants. They can not even pour milk for cereal and have to go out for coffee.
20:11:34 <Kevin L™> I was thinking of doing Navajo tacos tomorrow. Those are great.
20:11:53 <ynpvisitor1> With rattle snake?
20:12:13 <ynpvisitor1> Nevada chicken you know
20:12:50 <Kevin L™> My Mom did indeed teach me. I did a lot of dinners as a kid. I didn't think much of it then, but I am glad she insisted.
20:13:17 <Kevin L™> Usually of I run across a rattling snake there isn't enough left of it to eat!
20:13:46 <ynpvisitor1> Did you pass it on to your kids? Your love of cooking.
20:14:26 <Kevin L™> Two of them are great cooks. The other two know where the fast food joints are.
20:15:17 <ynpvisitor1> I figure there is nothing more important then being able to look in a cupboard and fix something good to eat out of what looks like nothing.
20:16:39 <Kevin L™> My Mom did a lot of that. My Dad worked at the Titanium plant here and when they went on strike we had some interesting creative meals.
20:18:29 <ynpvisitor1> Well it is getting too dark for me. Enjoy a good bogie move.
20:18:39 <ynpvisitor1> Or other
20:19:03 <Kevin L™> I think I will. May be Maltese Falcon tonight!
