06:57:30 <ynpvisitor999> morning Jake
06:58:33 <Jake> good afternoon, DG
07:00:38 <Casey> Morning
07:01:09 <ynpvisitor999> morning Casey
07:07:12 <ynpvisitor999> about 30 minutes to an hour till Castle
07:34:08 <Casey> Feed down?
07:34:34 <Casey> Back up for me
07:34:36 <ynpvisitor999> extremely choppy
07:38:05 <joethermop> gone again
07:40:41 <joethermop> live stream type loading...
07:42:23 <Casey> Same for me joe
07:42:39 <Casey> Back on
07:42:40 <Casey> Castle
07:42:57 <ynpvisitor999> ie
07:43:06 <ynpvisitor999> interval likely less than 13 hours
07:43:27 <Casey> listed 0941
07:43:34 <Casey> 13h 0m
07:43:43 <ynpvisitor999> close enough :)
07:44:25 <Casey> I hadn't noticed how short the Castle intervals had been lately
07:45:28 <ynpvisitor999> I think intervals were over 14 hours at the beginning of this year, with occassionally and interval less than 14 hours
07:51:11 <ynpvisitor999> Daisy
07:51:13 <Casey> Daisy
07:55:00 <Casey> Looks like Castle had mostly 14h+ intervals through May with intervals dropping since then.
07:56:16 <Jake> I haven't looked at Castle intervals, but there's a difference between intervals that follow 2 consecutive major eruptions vs intervals that follow a minor and a major
07:56:20 <ynpvisitor999> are there any events in May/June that may have caused Castle's intervals to drop to 13(.5) hours?
07:56:57 <Jake> if Castle isn't having very many minors, the intervals would be shorter on average because all eruptions are following major-major
07:58:02 <Jake> seems like the last couple years, Castle would have a minor eruption at least every other day
07:58:09 <ynpvisitor999> minor-major-major -> first eruption after minor is unpredictable, eruption following that major is median + 30 to 60 minutes, if I may say that this way
07:59:04 <Jake> yes, but I disagree that the first eruption after a minor is unpredictable because GT predicts it with great accuracy....it's just an 8 hour window
08:00:23 <ynpvisitor999> not entirely unpredictable (I agree on that point), but unpredictable in such way that it requires a large window
08:01:59 <Jake> technically predictable, not really useful for most visitors *relative to* what Castle is capable of. If F&M erupted in an 8 hour window, most would say that is predictable!
08:02:16 <ynpvisitor999> true that
08:02:32 <Casey> Looking at the last 1000 eruptions on GT, 26 eruptions have had intervals between 12h45m and 13h15m. 19 from July 2017, 3 from June 2017, 2 March 2017, 1 March 2016, and 1 February 2016.
08:02:44 <Casey> That doesn't seem to be simply a reduction in minor eruptions
08:04:05 <Casey> There are some shorter thant 12h45m, but I suspect most if not all of them were after minors
08:04:22 <Jake> then you have to distinguish which of those are post minor and which are post major-major
08:05:01 <ynpvisitor999> Could it be related with the June-July swarm?
08:05:04 <Jake> analyzing Castle requires extra preliminary data scrubbing :/
08:05:48 <Jake> Daisy and Castle are considered most prone to changes due to earthquakes of the major geysers
08:09:46 <Jake> I like to distinguish different geysers behavior and be more accurate about terms for visitors so that's why I consider post-minor Castle to be predictable. It WILL erupt, with great regularity, during a certain time frame.
08:12:05 <Jake> having a dynamic system like GT allows better information to get out to visitors as well. The print on the sign and Beehive says "intervals between eruptions can range between 10 hours to 5 days" which is true-ish and accurate, but not clear enough
08:12:19 <Jake> *the sign at Beehive
08:12:20 <Jake> OF
08:13:34 <Kevin L™> How about that sign at Aurum? That is only in someone's dreams!
08:14:05 <Jake> 20% of the time, it's true 100% of the time
08:14:29 <Casey> Just double-checked. None of the eruptions I mentioned for Castle followed a minor eruption or were the first major to major interval following a minor.
08:15:20 <Jake> you may be on to something then
08:15:25 <ynpvisitor999> OF barely made the 3-minute mark
08:15:42 <Jake> it's still shooting water isn't it?
08:15:51 <Jake> ther's some
08:17:30 <ynpvisitor999> I've seen jets of water till 3m50s after the eruption
08:21:52 <ynpvisitor27> ´LC ie
08:45:44 <Jimbo Uranium> What's the sign at Aurum say?
08:47:44 <Jake> http://c8.alamy.com/comp/DA2744/information-sign-outlining-details-of-aurum-geyser-and-geyser-types-DA2744.jpg
08:48:22 <Jake> there's some optimistic numbers in the first paragraph ;)
08:57:09 <Jimbo Uranium> Every 2.5 to 5 hours +/- 10 hours
08:57:51 <ynpvisitor7> that would probably get half of them.
09:02:18 <ynpvisitor7> best to say every 2.5 to 5 hours +30 hours, that would get most of them.
09:08:25 <Jake> I remember when those signs came out. The Grotto and Riverside ones have their images reversed L to R
09:09:16 <Jake> it's hard to say what exactly changes the geyser behavior, when the signs are installed? or when the text is sent to the printer with no opportunity to change it?
09:09:30 <Kevin L™> Looks like we missed AAurum this morning
09:11:40 <ynpvisitor999> .
09:13:10 <Eric> webcam down
09:13:34 <ynpvisitor999> not (yet) on my side
09:13:38 <ynpvisitor7> ok here
09:13:39 <Eric> went down at 11:10
09:14:02 <ynpvisitor72> refresh worked to get mine started again.
09:14:07 <Eric> hmm, must have come back up
09:44:11 <Casey> Ok. Lunch time. Don't let anything exciting happen while I'm gone.
10:17:33 <Jimbo Uranium> Noting Daisy near the end since nobody else did
10:36:19 <Casey> One whole comment during my lunch break. You all really didn't let anything exciting happen.
10:58:09 <Jimbo Uranium> A Lion for Casey
10:58:39 <Casey> Thanks Jimbo. I would have missed it if you didn't comment
11:01:32 <Jimbo Uranium> It's looking like an initial; I haven't been keeping track
11:01:50 <Casey> It's listed on GT as an initial
11:02:41 <Casey> Impressive Lion eruption
11:05:51 <ynpvisitor60> Using Surfboard on my iPhone 5, I can view streaming from the webcam. Also I have full use of GT.
11:06:25 <ynpvisitor45> Sent from phone.
11:14:39 <Eric> Hmmm, just talking to someone about the webcam and noticed they are broadcasting this in 1080p...no wonder we have horrible compression and pausing.
11:15:27 <Eric> If anyone is on here who has contact with NPS webcam guy, tell him to reduce the resolution to like 720p and it will make a world of difference.
11:15:50 <ynpvisitor75> I'm hoping they go back to the previous resolution. They said this was a test. I think it isn't working.
11:15:59 <Casey> I had noticed that the other day but assumed they must have done 1080p before as well
11:16:36 <Eric> I think previously it was 540p
11:16:41 <Jake> but muh clear pixture!
11:17:06 <Kevin L™> .
11:17:20 <ynpvisitor75> I already sent an email to the NPS this morning. I needed a day of data -- 48 drops yesterday and bad pixelation.
11:17:24 <Kevin L™> pm me Eric
11:17:27 <Eric> The picture is horrible...all grainy and compressed.
11:17:44 <Eric> Thanks 75...I thought you might be on it
11:17:48 <Jake> "It is better to have resolution and paused than to never have resoluted at all." -- William Shakespeare
11:18:12 <Eric> Not Jake the Goat?
11:19:34 <Casey> With the monitor I normally have it on, 620p would be perfect. Let's just go with that.
11:20:15 <ynpvisitor75> sorry that isn't one of the resolutions teh camera supports.
11:20:58 <Jake> why'd you go with 620p? -some dude in TN suggested it.- That's exactly how the NPS works!
11:21:52 <Eric> It's digital...you could do 621p :-P
11:22:17 <Casey> Exactly. According to Chrome, the frame has been resized to 1099.98 x 618.73
11:22:43 <Casey> Sounds like some fuzzy math to me
11:22:46 <Jake> how does .98 of a pixel work?
11:22:55 <Eric> Ya, you can't use chrome to measure the actual stream size as I magically resize to your monitors size
11:24:13 <Casey> Shouldn't every decision be made based on what looks best on my secondary monitor?
11:26:43 <ynpvisitor62> Watching crowd leaving on iPhone. Video frozen on PC. Both devices on same router. Frustrating.
11:26:50 <Kevin L™> I am also wondering about the night view. It looks black and white and very rough. I think someone changed a setting that gave us those great night shots. Hope that hasn't gone away.
11:27:47 <Casey> Yeah. I watched it a little last night. Granted there wasn't much moon light, but even with a flashlight on OF it looked like a black and white screen print
11:29:06 <Casey> SC
11:29:13 <ynpvisitor75> They decided to try the night mode. Could see a lot more than in teh past but it does go to black and white hen it gets really dark.
11:29:58 <Jake> are these settings they can set remotely or do they have to physically adjust the cam?
11:32:00 <ynpvisitor75> They should be able to do them remotely.
11:32:18 <Jake> Plate ?
11:34:55 <Jake> thanks, 75
11:46:21 <Eric> Yes, the camera has a web admin panel that they can go in and tweak
11:46:35 <Eric> No physical settings on the camera at all
11:47:21 <Eric> They need to fix the resolution and bitrate before they do any other "tweaking" Until that is correct, the rest isn't going to help.
11:47:54 <Eric> I know they have about an effective 1.2Mbps upload bandwidth
11:56:36 <hawaiijean> Is it true that the camera is attached to a tree and not the visitor center?
11:56:54 <Eric> iT IS
11:56:57 <Eric> It is
11:57:02 <Eric> sorry about that.
11:58:24 <Jake> the streaming camera is attached to a tree
11:58:36 <Jake> the static camera is in a high window inside the VEC
11:58:49 <Eric> Setting the camera to 1280x720 @ 15FPS would probably give a very nice image with the alotted bandwidth
12:00:32 <ynpvisitor103> We're going to need a bigger tree.
12:01:33 <hawaiijean> I was there in Yellowstone on July 15 - 20th, and was happy to see that they finally completed the overlook trail to the Grand Prismatic. Also I found the tour of the Million dollar room at the Old Faithful lower geyser store and grill very interesting. Wish I could have seen the swimming pool before they tore it down at Old Faithful.
12:05:48 <Casey> Eric, Lion is no longer listed on the GT predictions only 1h8m after the initial. Is that because it got pushed of the list of recent eruptions?
12:07:45 <Eric> Could be Casey...that Lion prediction is pretty brain dead :-P
12:08:41 <Casey> No problem. I blame udo for posting too much then. I was wondering if I had lost track of time and it was a one and done.
12:15:36 <Casey> Grand could erupt any Turban now.
12:16:44 <Casey> Ther's lion
12:16:50 <Casey> there's
12:18:05 <Jimbo Uranium> No, I just started another half-life
12:19:01 <Kevin L™> Does that mean you are getting old?
12:21:40 <ynpvisitor74> I am happy to know what's causing the cam pauses. Thanks guys. Bandwidth is the answer!
12:23:04 <Casey> Yeah. Bandwidth is easier to deal with than fried circuitry.
12:23:59 <ynpvisitor55> You have not transitioned to or alchemized to a different element?
12:24:33 <ynpvisitor...> Apparently he is decaying
12:25:29 <Eric> If the photoshop had more bandwidth...the world would be a happy place :-)
12:26:32 <ynpvisitor55> With streaming like this Kevin could miss his geyser.
12:26:58 <Kevin L™> Streaming?
12:27:13 <ynpvisitor...> :)
12:27:14 <Casey> I've got nothing
12:27:48 <Casey> Turban 1424. At least we haven't missed Grand yet
12:28:00 <ynpvisitor55> It is a stream or trickle of stills for me
12:28:59 <ynpvisitor55> Well it died for me, so off to watch dillon
12:29:16 <ynpvisitor110> 100 years ago an "Infernal contraption" was a car, now it's a camera.
12:30:32 <Jake> getting the photoshop more bandwidth means laying new cable from...West Yellowstone and beyond?
12:31:23 <Kevin L™> Telco is Wyoming. Probably Jackson.
12:31:41 <Casey> I see something
12:33:06 <Casey> I'm sure the "government" has high bandwidth infrastructure in place for the super secret research on our impending doom.
12:33:36 <Kevin L™> I think the lava melted it.
12:34:05 <Jake> I'm not sure which way the wires run. either way it's far to get to Old Faithful. Jackson has the money and political will to get high speed lines into it over West Yellowtone
12:34:37 <Jake> I had it in my mind that OF gets service via West but I don't have a source on that
12:34:54 <ynpvisitor...> NPS floated something months ago that involved a line from Jackson or at least the Annex. If I remember at all correctly it was $35 million.
12:34:56 <Casey> Is anyone else having issues with messages not going through?
12:35:10 <Jake> no
12:35:21 <ynpvisitor110> Nein.
12:35:27 <Kevin L™> All I know is that when it needs fixed it is Centrylink from Jackson.
12:35:45 <Kevin L™> Is that Betty lurking?
12:35:53 <Casey> Ok. Maybe I should start blaming my ISP instead
12:36:25 <Kevin L™> Mine deserves it whether it is their fault or not.
12:37:36 <ynpvisitor110> Landline must circle Mt. Everts so signal gets lost sometimes,
12:38:52 <Jake> The Official Camchat Hierarchy of Blame is as follows: Dave from B > ISP > the guvmint > Xanterra > NPS > Asian tour buses
12:40:22 <Casey> How did I forget to blame Dave?
12:41:00 <ynpvisitor110> Russian hackers, alien species, and digruntled Postal workers.
12:41:15 <Jimbo Uranium> and bison
12:42:52 <Eric> Can you make us a flowchart Jake?
12:43:04 <Eric> I will add it to the important links
12:44:10 <Eric> The copper goes through billings...not sure where from there.
12:44:28 <Casey> Little known fact: Chemtrails are actually the "guvmint" spreading high bandwidth internet to the masses.
12:44:38 <Eric> I assume there has to be a line from billings to OF somehow
12:46:19 <Casey> Grand
12:48:42 <Jake> Billings to Livingston to Mammoth to Norris to OF then? It would make sense that Mammoth got access first
12:52:07 <Casey> Come on OF. Let's do this before a second burst by Grand
12:54:02 <Eric> Well, there are probably connections there for qwest, but there is not any IP switch between the two.
12:55:11 <Casey> 9m
12:56:10 <Casey> 10m. Looks like one burst is all we're going to get.
12:56:49 <Casey> Pause ~10m10s
12:57:18 <ynpvisitor110> Is there any correlation between seismic activity and all those people leaving OF for the parking lot ?
13:00:59 <Casey> That comment makes me sad. What ratio of OF observers come only for OF and leave immediately after?
13:03:58 <Casey> OF ie
13:04:04 <joethermop> OFie
13:04:07 <Casey> probably NS
13:32:10 <ynpvisitor49> Big Kitty
14:24:00 <ynpvisitor105> No Text?

14:28:55 <ynpvisitor105> OF
14:29:34 <ynpvisitor105> We're going to need a long Indicator
14:31:27 <Kent> Oh NO!
14:31:30 <Eric> I emailed Kevin in hopes he could send it
14:31:57 <Eric> Dave is in the car...
14:31:58 <Kevin L™> .
14:32:05 <Kent> :)
14:32:38 <Eric> Hey Kevin...mind sending txt?
14:32:48 <Kevin L™> Thanks Eric. Txt sent
14:33:04 <Joethermop> What a time to freeze
14:33:24 <Kevin L™> This seems to know when a good geyser is going.
14:33:58 <Eric> OF just went so we are clear of the window
14:34:22 <Kevin L™> Watching grown men crash expensive cars and cooking chicken soup.
14:35:01 <Kent> I knew it had something to do with chickens
14:35:25 <Kevin L™> That chicken isn't going to mess with me again!
14:35:34 <Kent> :)
14:35:40 <Eric> Don't say that before you eat it ;-)
14:35:50 <Eric> It has one last chance....
14:36:14 <ynpvisitor44> GO
14:36:16 <Eric> BH
14:36:33 <Kevin L™> Getting attention from the OF indicator.
14:36:39 <Eric> Still never received a txt
14:37:18 <Kent> No wind BH. Neat
14:37:19 <Kevin L™> I got it.
14:37:50 <Eric> Yes, very vertical
14:38:05 <ynpvisitor44> stream works better in Chrome. Was not happy in Firefox
14:38:53 <Eric> If you collapse the weather radar window...this page works much better in firefox
14:39:12 <ynpvisitor44> thanks for the tip! :)
14:39:38 <Eric> firefox has some issue with motion gifs...which is weird since they have been pretty standard for about 10 years :-P
14:41:33 <Eric> lionn
14:41:36 <Kent> I wonder if the people on the boardwalk know OF erupted? It was outside the window on the short side.
14:42:09 <Eric> Not logged on GT...didn't happen :-P
14:42:26 <ynpvisitor44> Looks like a minor
14:42:31 <Eric> yep
14:49:58 <ynpvisitor64> did OF erupt at 1605? Not on GT.
14:51:01 <Eric> 1628
14:51:20 <ynpvisitor64> should have said 1628
15:03:23 <Biddle> looks like the Ravens still like SC
15:05:08 <ynpvisitor...> It's a raven microwave. They bring their treat there to warm them up.
15:17:41 <ynpvisitor22> looks like a new HD Digital camera, everything is so so sharp! GREAT
15:23:56 <Eric> Thats due to the clean dome :-)
16:10:13 <Casey> OF ie, very late in eruption
16:11:01 <Casey> just the last 2 or 3 splashes
16:14:52 <Eric> is that terra cotta down basin?
16:15:14 <Eric> hmmm, gone now
16:15:49 <Casey> We got an in basin report of OF. Glad my comment didn't have to be the official record
17:45:31 <ynpvisitor12345> OF
18:47:55 <ynpvisitor18> OF ie
