<Joe> Kevin, did Dave have to drive to Portland?
05:38:36
<Joe> Daisy ie

<Joe> Sprinkler
05:44:38
<Kevin L™> Yes, Dave ended up stuck in the I-15/US-91 parking lot and missed Becca's plane. They had to drive all night to get to Portland. He did get his raft trip and the eclipse. That traffic jam lasted past midnight. I was really glad I had a place and had made plans to spend the night in Rexburg. Conditions there were perfect for the eclipse.
05:45:05
<Kevin L™> The really funny thing was it was totally overcast and raining in Vegas!
05:46:01
<Joe> Worked out great for you, not so much for Dave though.
05:46:50
<Kevin L™> He really wasn't complaining that much. I think he thought it was worth it.
05:48:44
<Joe> Yes Yellowstone, the raft trip and eclipse was worth the chance he took :)
05:50:20
<Joe> Someone press the BH button, please
05:52:14
<Kevin L™> I think in hind sight he probably would have caught it closer to Idaho Falls and did a beeline to Pocatello.
05:52:42
<Kevin L™> I think he only had about 6h of sleep in two days.
06:00:48
<ynpvisitor26> That's not much sleep. He'll have to catch up when he gets back to the shop.
06:02:14
<Kevin L™> Last I heard he was kicking back on the beach with his wife.
06:03:23
<ynpvisitor26> That works too.

06:15:47
<Kent> Kevin, I drove down Monday morning to Fall River between Ashton and Rigby and had no traffic problems.I had a minute and fifty seconds of totality and thought it was simply amazing. A little bit of congestion driving back to the park but when I arrive there was no delay getting back in.
06:17:59
<Kevin L™> I think most of the people were going the other way. It was a great show in that area. I was about 1/2 mile east of the middle Rexburg exit. We just joined about 1000 other people in the apartment parking lot and had a great time.

<Kevin L™> I never got that deep into it. Just did enough to get by and left it at that.

<Kevin L™> If you went into bridge design you had more of that. I was lucky just to figure spiral curves.

<ynpvisitor77> West Gate back to normal today.
10:11:18
<Kevin L™> I-15 was really bad. It was even crowded yesterday all the way to Vegas.
10:17:02
<Kevin L™> I am just glad that I really don't have to use that type of math anymore Ryan. We didn't have computers to help in design back then but we dis have some good calculators that could handle things such as the HP 41C and the Ti-59.
10:21:57
<Ryan(hw)> My Automatic Controls class has us do Laplace by hand.
10:22:23
<Ryan(hw)> Several times the roots are either imaginary or repeated. Laplace can go die in a hole.
10:27:53
<Kevin L™> I know what you are saying. I borrowed some books from my Sister-in-Law when I was taking calc. She said there may be a few swear words in there but that is how she felt. I agreed.
10:28:55
<Ryan(hw)> Yeah, I am sure some professors have laughed reading comments in my computer codes and paper calculations.
10:29:07
<Ryan(hw)> I only do it for the professors I know I can do it with haha
10:31:41
<Kevin L™> Once you get working they have the computers to do it. They could afford to pay for hand calculations, but it is important you understand what is going on since computers are only as good as programmers and can give bogus data.
10:32:54
<Ryan(hw)> Oh yeah, I fully support and appreciate having to do it. It just drives me insane haha
10:33:32
<Kevin L™> Yep. I hated it too.
10:34:24
<Kevin L™> It is nice to transform to the work environment. Practical application is always better than theory.
10:35:28
<Casey> I'm thankful somebody has that knowledge (and am probably equally thankful it's not me). Guess and check in engineering probably isn't the way to go.
10:35:50
<Ryan(hw)> Guess and check happens a lot. Its how we get to not having to guess and check.
10:36:10
<Kevin L™> For sure!
10:36:26
<Casey> Yeah. We certainly have a long theory of guess and check. You have to have a lot of data points to identify the relationships.
10:36:31
<Casey> *long history
10:37:31
<Kevin L™> What is bad is when something is designed and they modify it to fit conditions without checking with the engineers who designed it.
10:38:27
<Ryan(hw)> Yep. And what is scary is when the 787 accidentally takes off during a high speed taxi test.
10:38:34
<Ryan(hw)> Because the lift was higher than they thought.
10:38:46
<Kevin L™> Oops!

10:39:36

10:39:47
<ynpvisitor999> guess they fixed it with putting more lead in the plane
