03:29:00 <ynpvisitor1> Grand ie?
04:35:58 <ynpvisitor999> morning everyone
05:05:53 <Joe> OF ie
05:05:55 <ynpvisitor999> OF 0704
05:06:10 <ynpvisitor999> 0705*
05:36:16 <Joe> Kevin, did Dave have to drive to Portland?
05:38:36 <Joe> Daisy ie
05:40:16 <Joe> Sprinkler
05:44:38 <Kevin L™> Yes, Dave ended up stuck in the I-15/US-91 parking lot and missed Becca's plane. They had to drive all night to get to Portland. He did get his raft trip and the eclipse. That traffic jam lasted past midnight. I was really glad I had a place and had made plans to spend the night in Rexburg. Conditions there were perfect for the eclipse.
05:45:05 <Kevin L™> The really funny thing was it was totally overcast and raining in Vegas!
05:46:01 <Joe> Worked out great for you, not so much for Dave though.
05:46:50 <Kevin L™> He really wasn't complaining that much. I think he thought it was worth it.
05:48:44 <Joe> Yes Yellowstone, the raft trip and eclipse was worth the chance he took :)
05:50:20 <Joe> Someone press the BH button, please
05:52:14 <Kevin L™> I think in hind sight he probably would have caught it closer to Idaho Falls and did a beeline to Pocatello.
05:52:42 <Kevin L™> I think he only had about 6h of sleep in two days.
06:00:48 <ynpvisitor26> That's not much sleep. He'll have to catch up when he gets back to the shop.
06:02:14 <Kevin L™> Last I heard he was kicking back on the beach with his wife.
06:03:23 <ynpvisitor26> That works too.
06:05:37 <Kevin L™> Is that a Raspberry pi?
06:10:12 <ynpvisitor81> Plate ie?
06:10:56 <ynpvisitor999> could be
06:11:27 <ynpvisitor999> though I think you'd see more steam and a couple of splashes
06:15:47 <Kent> Kevin, I drove down Monday morning to Fall River between Ashton and Rigby and had no traffic problems.I had a minute and fifty seconds of totality and thought it was simply amazing. A little bit of congestion driving back to the park but when I arrive there was no delay getting back in.
06:17:59 <Kevin L™> I think most of the people were going the other way. It was a great show in that area. I was about 1/2 mile east of the middle Rexburg exit. We just joined about 1000 other people in the apartment parking lot and had a great time.
06:19:22 <Art> Looks like the park got slammed yesterday
06:19:36 <Art> OF and West Thumb were closed due to being "over capacity"
06:19:51 <Art> According to the post on FB by the park
06:20:00 <Kevin L™> Wow.
06:20:16 <Kevin L™> Lot of steam in the Aurum area.

06:20:39 <Art>
06:21:01 <ynpvisitor...> I had 50 people from Alberta and a family from England in the pullout just south of the Fall River. It was fun having others to watch it with. I had no problem getting out of the park yesterday, but left at 0500.

06:26:22 <Kitt> asked Jim if it was Plate, he said all he could see was steam
06:26:22 <Kevin L™> Morning Kitt.
06:26:36 <Kitt> hello
06:26:57 <ynpvisitor112> Cool
06:27:00 <Kevin L™> Betty had a great view of the eclipse and got F&M for the first time the next day!
06:27:09 <Kitt> missed bee yesterday, vacuuming the house
06:27:38 <Kitt> have to take car in this morning to get brake light sensor replaced
06:27:56 <Kitt> brake lights were on all the way to Shoshoni and back
06:27:58 <Kevin L™> I was on the i-15 parking structure most of the day.
06:28:11 <Kitt> person following me was nice enough to let us know
06:29:17 <ynpvisitor999> OF in GT window
06:29:46 <Kevin L™> Some great eclipse pictures:
06:29:50 <Kitt> bad breeze direction
06:29:56 <Jimbo Copernici> That would be "Copernicium"
06:31:00 <Casey> What will be ready first, BH or my coffee?
06:31:23 <ynpvisitor999> I think Jimbo feels a bit unstable today, as the most stable isotope has a half-life of only 29 seconds
06:31:26 <Kitt> I hope bee
06:33:06 <Jimbo Cn> It's not how long you last, it's how heavy you are
06:33:42 <Kitt> no fluffy, wait your turn please
06:34:06 <Kevin L™> Hope for a short fluffy or a looooong Indy.
06:34:25 <ynpvisitor999> Cn is a heavy metal, and thus most likely unstable
06:34:32 <ynpvisitor999> which it is
06:34:52 <Jimbo Cn> I guess we'll never know if it
06:35:00 <Jimbo Cn> is liquid at room temperature ;-)
06:35:32 <ynpvisitor999> part of the group where mercury is in
06:35:45 <ynpvisitor999> BA
06:35:57 <Kitt> I would like a beautiful one burst Beehive, followed by an awesome Old Faithful
06:36:22 <ynpvisitor999> I'm hoping for either a long Indy or a short OF
06:37:26 <Jimbo Cn> Hey 999, check out this periodic table: it has art work for each element -
06:37:39 <Kevin L™> A dual would be nice from the good side of the cam.
06:37:55 <Kitt> Beehive
06:37:58 <ynpvisitor3> BH
06:38:25 <Casey> Boardwalk is going to get a good show
06:38:34 <ynpvisitor...> This is cool!
06:38:48 <Casey> bye bye bee
06:38:56 <Kitt> grrr
06:39:07 <Art> Nice dual (at times)
06:39:10 <Kitt> that is ok
06:39:29 <ynpvisitor999> well... it's not that bad now
06:39:43 <Kevin L™> Needs an Aurum
06:39:44 <Kitt> so when did fluffy start
06:40:06 <ynpvisitor3.14> my st re a m is rea ll y cho ppy of cou rs e.. ..
06:40:30 <ynpvisitor999> thought for a sec OF was going to do a short
06:40:31 <Kitt> yay bee is still tall
06:40:35 <Casey> ~15seconds after Bee
06:41:16 <Kitt> so 0838 wc Old Faithful
06:41:49 <ynpvisitor999> started the OF timer at 0838:11
06:43:25 <Kitt> enjoy the day, time to take car in
06:43:28 <ynpvisitor999> thanks for the link, Jimbo
06:43:37 <Joe> that made my day, now off to physical therapy, (not mental) :)
06:43:53 <Jimbo Cn> Some of the art makes sense, but not always
06:49:59 <Jake> morning all, did I miss anything?
06:50:10 <ynpvisitor999> Beehive and OF duel
06:50:12 <ynpvisitor999> dual*
06:50:31 <Kevin L™> No Aurum though.
06:54:38 <ynpvisitor999> Jake, could you please add the geysers Flat Cone, Iron Pot and Convoluted/UNNG-SMG-2 (all in Lower Geyser Basin) to GeyserTimes? I've found a bunch of entries of those geysers in the 1992 log, aswell as, in the case of Iron Pot, logger files on the GOSA website

08:15:53 <ynpvisitor999> OF 1013 A
08:16:20 <ynpvisitor999> caught it at ~120s
08:19:35 <Casey> I'm pretty sure GT procedures would be to list it as ie and the time observed. (Maybe with add a note about the assumed start time.) Am I wrong in that understanding?
08:20:06 <Casey> Kevin got the start time anyway (and you were right about 1013). Just for future reference.
08:25:17 <ynpvisitor999> it should be ie, like you sais, but because I didn't really wanted to enter it because I was busy with other things, I put that in chat
08:25:21 <ynpvisitor999> said*
08:25:27 <ynpvisitor999> Castle
08:25:51 <Kevin L™> It should be posted as ie if you don't have the exact start time and see the geyser. The assumed time would be like for something not really seen, but evidence shows it did erupt.
08:26:08 <Casey> Thanks for the clarification. I figured you knew as well or better than me, so I just wanted to make sure.
08:26:13 <Kevin L™> I did get the times on the OF.
08:26:29 <ynpvisitor999> Castle pause
08:36:54 <Micah> So....when did the Camchat get all fancy? I've been out of the loop for a while.
08:37:19 <Kevin L™> Eric got industrious.
08:37:44 <Micah> Well. Looks nice. Well done Eric.
08:37:59 <Ryan(hw)> Was womdering who did it.
08:38:03 <Ryan(hw)> Nice!
08:38:23 <Kevin L™> He did a great job.
09:02:49 <ynpvisitor15> Grand
09:03:06 <Casey> Bingo
09:03:34 <Casey> Thanks for drawing my attention.
09:03:39 <ynpvisitor15> Jim on top of it.
09:10:51 <Jimbo Cn> ~8 minutes
09:12:42 <Jimbo Cn> ~10 minutes
09:12:47 <Kevin L™> Not looking good for a 2nd
09:12:56 <Jimbo Cn> But this is a really good view
09:14:20 <ynpvisitor999> looks like Grand's done
09:14:40 <ynpvisitor999> unless it's preparing for an afterburst
09:23:26 <ynpvisitor999> Grand D3/G1C d=10m13s
09:23:52 <ynpvisitor999> haven't seen a D3 in 2017 for a while

10:06:17 <Ryan(hw)> Kevin did you ever have to use laplace?
10:08:13 <Kevin L™> I never got that deep into it. Just did enough to get by and left it at that.
10:08:50 <Kevin L™> If you went into bridge design you had more of that. I was lucky just to figure spiral curves.
10:10:19 <ynpvisitor77> West Gate back to normal today.
10:11:18 <Kevin L™> I-15 was really bad. It was even crowded yesterday all the way to Vegas.
10:17:02 <Kevin L™> I am just glad that I really don't have to use that type of math anymore Ryan. We didn't have computers to help in design back then but we dis have some good calculators that could handle things such as the HP 41C and the Ti-59.
10:21:57 <Ryan(hw)> My Automatic Controls class has us do Laplace by hand.
10:22:23 <Ryan(hw)> Several times the roots are either imaginary or repeated. Laplace can go die in a hole.
10:27:53 <Kevin L™> I know what you are saying. I borrowed some books from my Sister-in-Law when I was taking calc. She said there may be a few swear words in there but that is how she felt. I agreed.
10:28:55 <Ryan(hw)> Yeah, I am sure some professors have laughed reading comments in my computer codes and paper calculations.
10:29:07 <Ryan(hw)> I only do it for the professors I know I can do it with haha
10:31:41 <Kevin L™> Once you get working they have the computers to do it. They could afford to pay for hand calculations, but it is important you understand what is going on since computers are only as good as programmers and can give bogus data.
10:32:54 <Ryan(hw)> Oh yeah, I fully support and appreciate having to do it. It just drives me insane haha
10:33:32 <Kevin L™> Yep. I hated it too.
10:34:24 <Kevin L™> It is nice to transform to the work environment. Practical application is always better than theory.
10:35:28 <Casey> I'm thankful somebody has that knowledge (and am probably equally thankful it's not me). Guess and check in engineering probably isn't the way to go.
10:35:50 <Ryan(hw)> Guess and check happens a lot. Its how we get to not having to guess and check.
10:36:10 <Kevin L™> For sure!
10:36:26 <Casey> Yeah. We certainly have a long theory of guess and check. You have to have a lot of data points to identify the relationships.
10:36:31 <Casey> *long history
10:37:31 <Kevin L™> What is bad is when something is designed and they modify it to fit conditions without checking with the engineers who designed it.
10:38:27 <Ryan(hw)> Yep. And what is scary is when the 787 accidentally takes off during a high speed taxi test.
10:38:34 <Ryan(hw)> Because the lift was higher than they thought.
10:38:46 <Kevin L™> Oops!
10:38:51 <Casey> Wow. I hadn't heard that
10:39:21 <Kevin L™> Hard to apply brakes in the air!
10:39:36 <Ryan(hw)> very hard haha
10:39:47 <ynpvisitor999> guess they fixed it with putting more lead in the plane
10:40:09 <Ryan(hw)> The 787 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. But I am biased given all equal competition is foreign.
10:40:13 <Kevin L™> Daisy
10:41:26 <Kevin L™> Boeing has always do good airplanes, speaking of which I caught Air Force One on my virtual radar this morning. That is a first for me!
10:42:16 <Kevin L™> The 747 has always been a favorite. It is just so graceful. I love it in the KLM paint.
10:42:39 <Ryan(hw)> Pilots described flying it is like driving a Caddilac.
10:43:24 <Casey> Ryan(hw), do you know of an idiots guide to calculating Euler angles? I'm actually a developer, but I've been experimenting with augmented reality, so I'll need a better grasp on placing and orienting objects in 3D space.
10:43:47 <Ryan(hw)> Nope.
10:43:59 <Ryan(hw)> I havent taken the classes with those, yet. And I dont look forward to it
10:45:59 <Casey> Thanks anyway. I figured it was a long-shot. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it difficult.
10:46:17 <Ryan(hw)> I think everyone including Euler finds them difficult
10:49:17 <Casey> How much does it cost to audit that class?
10:49:20 <Casey> jk

10:51:55 <Ryan(hw)> Haha, yeah, I know the feeling
10:57:24 <Casey> Ok. I'm out of here. I have a second interview for a new job. Wish me luck (, or the opposite if you want me to be able to be on this site during business hours).
10:57:45 <Kevin L™> Good luck
10:58:06 <Ryan(hw)> Good luck, Casey!
10:58:18 <Casey> Thanks guys. Enjoy the show.

18:48:14 <ynpvisitor3> Glow of all the cell phones and cameras in interesting
18:49:21 <JSJ> Am noticing tons of flashlights in overnight captures, resulting in lots of glare in the web camera, even at very late hours.
18:49:58 <JSJ> In wintertime, there is little to none of that - I got used to seeing that this past winter.
18:50:59 <JSJ> Occasionally, the flashlights highlight the beginning of an eruption in the distance that would otherwise be difficult to discern in overnight captures.
19:51:05 <ynpvisitor5> As an experiment it would be interesting to see what a strobe light pointed at Old Faithful or Beehive from the boardwalk would look like.
21:07:01 <ynpvisitor94> Possibly BH
