01:35:57 <ynpvisitor53> Looks like Giant picked a horrible time to erupt.
03:40:16 <Rice> I see Giant was Shy again.
04:10:24 <ynpvisitor52> OF
04:55:13 <Dave from B™> Good morning everyone!
04:55:36 <ynpvisitor104> hi Dave
04:55:37 <Rice> MorningDave, Giant went overnight
04:56:12 <ynpvisitor83> morning, lc here.
04:56:32 <ynpvisitor83> Dave you thinking about a SB run?
04:57:40 <Dave from B™> Morning lc, Rice, 104
04:58:02 <Dave from B™> I thought about it but I decided to go to work instead.
04:58:31 <ynpvisitor104> work is much more fun! :)
04:58:35 <Dave from B™> I hope Micah caught Giant
04:58:46 <ynpvisitor83> understand. I really wish you and Becca could catch it.
05:00:16 <ynpvisitor104> We have watchers at Bee
05:11:31 <ynpvisitor999®> Looks like SB's activity ramped up after ~1830 yesterday - peaked at just below 38°C @ ~0245
05:13:24 <Dave from B™> The graph has definitely changed beginning July 16
05:16:14 <ynpvisitor999®> Daisy
05:32:09 <ynpvisitor40> Anyone else seeing a weird malformed time entry on Giant (geysertimes.org)?
05:32:58 <ynpvisitor999®> you mean 0007:31?
05:32:59 <ynpvisitor104> that is HK's ios app it includes seconds
05:33:08 <ynpvisitor999®> what 104 said
05:33:34 <Rice> That is pretty Precise
05:35:50 <ynpvisitor999®> I bet everyone who waited for Giant is now headed to SB
05:36:02 <ynpvisitor104> you ought to see his Grand posts, a lot of information
05:36:05 <ynpvisitor999®> leaving only F&M watchers behind
05:38:23 <Stephen G.> I like the information HK's app gives, but I wish it was a little less than $10 in the store.
05:39:24 <ynpvisitor104> If you email him he will give you a coupon
05:40:14 <Stephen G.> I might have to do that - thanks 104.
05:49:41 <ynpvisitor15> The iOS app costs 10$?
05:50:59 <Stephen G.> HK's does. The regular Geyser Times app is free.
05:51:16 <ynpvisitor15> Ok,thx
05:56:45 <ynpvisitor999®> OF's pulling a long interval
05:59:14 <ynpvisitor999®> morning Bill and Mike and others
05:59:22 <Bill> Morning
05:59:39 <Mike J> Morning
06:01:18 <ynpvisitor76> I wonder how many people were at Giant
06:01:31 <ynpvisitor104> OF 0800
06:01:35 <ynpvisitor999®> fuzzball
06:01:37 <ynpvisitor76> No details from HK
06:02:32 <ynpvisitor45> BOOM
06:02:52 <ynpvisitor999®> short, ~1m46s
06:04:08 <ynpvisitor999®> SC?
06:04:39 <ynpvisitor999®> seems to be ie, inferred from steam
06:11:19 <ynpvisitor999®> Lion might be soon
06:23:33 <ynpvisitor999®> morning Kevin
06:24:16 <ynpvisitor999®> LC ie
06:24:37 <Dave from B™> Kevin's here...now BHI can start
06:27:57 <ynpvisitor76> NPS did not have OF as a short
06:28:18 <Kevin L™> Forgot to mention it yesterday Dave, What happened 63 years ago yesterday?
06:29:24 <Mike J> I know! I know! (At least, if you're talking about the same thing I am.)
06:29:39 <Dave from B™> Thanks to ge I know the answer...The 2nd happiest place on earth opened
06:30:05 <Kevin L™> And the 2nd most expensive.
06:31:27 <Mike J> And, in a fit of irony, coincidence, or whatever word is correct, i was born.
06:31:51 <Dave from B™> on the same exact day and year, MIke?
06:32:21 <Mike J> Yes. I'm still mad at my mom for not taking me. But she claims she was busy.
06:32:30 <Kevin L™> My inlaws were going to go but my wife ruined it for them.
06:32:31 <Dave from B™> hahahaha
06:32:56 <Dave from B™> I have the video from opening day. It is fun to watch
06:34:08 <Mike J> What's fun about that video is that live events like that were very rare. And it is definitely a train wreck.
06:34:38 <Dave from B™> HAHA. YEP. iT WOULDN'T WIN ANY AWARDS TODAY:)
06:35:00 <Kevin L™> I was born earlier that year so when they announced the 30th Birthday Party I decided to go. They were filming for the special that night and we watch Marie Osmond do her piano number on Main Street.
06:35:01 <Dave from B™> Ronald Reagan, Louie Armstrong...lots of stars
06:36:24 <Kevin L™> It was a big event. My Father in Law had tickets but my wife was born the day after opening so they couldn't go. Kids. No consideration.
06:39:20 <Dave from B™> That's bad timing
06:46:20 <Kevin L™> I used to go twice a year before the rates got insane. I was even the lucky guy once that got the first parking place!
06:48:44 <ynpvisitor999®> LC
06:51:10 <ynpvisitor999®> OF 0850
06:51:57 <ynpvisitor999®> This is the shortest interval in the last 100, and probably the shortest in a couple of months now
06:53:20 <ynpvisitor999®> Indy
06:53:21 <ynpvisitor999®> .
06:53:21 <ynpvisitor999®> .
06:53:22 <ynpvisitor999®> .
06:53:23 <ynpvisitor999®> .
06:53:24 <ynpvisitor999®> .
06:54:33 <Coffee Milk> I guess the last OF was a short, then.
06:54:55 <ynpvisitor999®> ~1m46s
06:56:56 <Dave from B™> DG, you had it as a short...wonder why NPS had it as a long
06:57:47 <Kevin L™> I would bet they were busy and didn't get it timed correctly and used long as a default.
06:58:07 <ynpvisitor999®> I think so too
06:58:53 <Jake> don't they open at 0800? or it was too steamy to tell
06:59:03 <Jake> or they guessed or they typo'd
06:59:22 <Jake> cool to see a 50 minute interval :)
06:59:44 <Kevin L™> I suspect a bit busy and a lot of steam.
07:00:01 <ynpvisitor999®> This is probably one of the only times in the past few years there were two OF's within an hour
07:00:06 <Jake> how different the Old Faithful area would be with 50 minute OF's instead of 100 minute
07:00:53 <Dave from B™> You wouldn't nned as big of a parking lot
07:00:53 <Jake> GT BH prediction isn't garbage today! yay
07:01:11 <Dave from B™> Gift shop spending would probably go way down
07:01:38 <Mike J> And people would still complain "In my day, it went off every hour on the hour."
07:03:29 <ynpvisitor999®> morning sparekitty
07:09:15 <sparekitty> good morning all! happy to get the work day started with BH!
07:09:49 <Kevin L™> How are your chickens doing?
07:09:50 <Stephen G.> Morning
07:09:55 <ynpvisitor999®> :bee:
07:11:26 <sparekitty> chickens are going okay, but NOT LAYING. it's annoying.
07:11:29 <Kevin L™> Nice tall one.
07:11:47 <sparekitty> beautiful BH.
07:12:00 <ynpvisitor999®> LC
07:12:03 <Stephen G.> Nice to see a BH with no wind knocking it down.
07:14:13 <Coffee Milk> It's darned annoying when nothing is getting laid
07:14:59 <ynpvisitor104> :)
07:15:07 <Kevin L™> Right now I am only getting a fraction of the eggs I normally get. Not laying in the heat is normal. They will pickup. BTW I found that ADM eggmaker pellets really increase egg production.
07:15:33 <ynpvisitor999®> That was one of the best BH's I've seen so far
07:15:55 <Coffee Milk> I agree, Triple-Niner
07:16:03 <Stephen G.> I agree - that was a beautiful BH.
07:23:13 <sparekitty> ADM eggmaker pellets? i'll have to look around for that. i will admit to feeding them the least expensive layer feed i can find that has at least 15% protein. and lots of scraps and collards.
07:25:35 <Kevin L™> I usually feed mine mostly the pellets. Check the scraps you feed them since some can hurt egg production. I am skimpy on treats.
07:25:58 <Kevin L™> I do let them dig in the backyard and eat bugs though.
07:26:30 <ynpvisitor104> 999, BHI start time 08:53:11 on my recording if you want an exact time for your ie
07:27:55 <ynpvisitor999®> thanks :) Edited it so now it says it's the exact time
07:33:37 <BruceJ> Good morning folks.
07:33:51 <ynpvisitor999®> morning Bruce
07:34:09 <BruceJ> I trust everyone saw the Giant call that happened just after midnight.
07:34:12 <Stephen G.> Morning Bruce.
07:34:23 <Kevin L™> Hey Bruce, were you the one talking about the Eureka?
07:34:40 <BruceJ> Yepp, I'm the train fan!
07:35:06 <sparekitty> thanks, kevin, for the suggestions. my girls definitely get time in the yard, and they eat lizards when the cat is doing 'playing' with them.
07:35:33 <BruceJ> There's just something special about 1870's Baldwins, standard or narrow gauge.
07:36:08 <Kevin L™> I talked to Dan Saturday and he says he will not be taking the Eureka to Durango this year. He was putting sheetmetal on the "Elsa" combine. It looks so good right now.
07:36:40 <BruceJ> Aw, that's too bad - but maybe he's got something else in mind.
07:37:53 <Kevin L™> I think he is just getting worn out. He did the boiler upgrade on the Eureka along with all the work he does on the Elsa. He did retire now so he has a bit more time to do fun things.
07:40:04 <Kevin L™> BTW the Cumbres & Toltec is getting ready to go. Here is the link for their live cams: http://www.coloradonewmexicosteamtrain.org/camera-portal-horizontal.htm
07:43:08 <BruceJ> Very cool! Thanks!
07:44:24 <Kevin L™> It will pass the south camera and then go through the north camera.
07:45:55 <BruceJ> So, does Dan have any help at all? That sounds like a LOT of work for one guy.
07:47:50 <Jake> from 7/16 chat, both Dave and Betty are still in the running as they picked Giant first. both picked Giant, Steamboat, F&M
07:47:57 <BruceJ> And Dan's not 25 years old anymore!
07:48:00 <Jake> but Dave additionally added both G and SB before the end of today
07:48:07 <Kevin L™> He has some friends that help him out. The museum lets him use their shop equipment. If you are in the Vegas area the museum is in Boulder City and Dan is usually there on Saturday. It is in the shop building across the street from the passenger loading area and visitors there are welcome.
07:48:12 <Jake> and Betty said each will be 2 days apart
07:48:33 <ynpvisitor999®> Daisy
07:48:51 <BruceJ> OK, thanks.
07:50:11 <BruceJ> I'm not sure I'd be willing to bet on Steamboat anymore.
07:51:03 <BruceJ> Kevin L, does the CT&S run coal? That smoke has a coal look to it.
07:52:40 <ynpvisitor999®> Riverside
07:53:08 <ynpvisitor999®> though a bit far to the left
07:54:06 <ynpvisitor104> looks good correct time no wind
07:54:15 <BruceJ> Riverside almost smack in the middle of its interval. Hmmm.
07:54:31 <ynpvisitor999®> Lion ini
07:54:41 <Kevin L™> CT&S is a coal burner.
07:55:20 <BruceJ> OK - that's what I thought, with the very brown smoke.
07:56:15 <ynpvisitor999®> LC
07:56:35 <Kevin L™> I like the small better than the oil version.
07:58:37 <BruceJ> I have not been on a coal run for awhile, since my last visit to Steamtown, but yeah, coal has a neat aroma to it.
07:59:45 <BruceJ> It also has (cooled) cinders that get in your hair :-)
08:00:57 <Kevin L™> My friend took his wife on the Silverton in an open gondola. She wore a white dress. Came back with a gray dress.
08:01:04 <BruceJ> Two toots on the whistle.
08:02:17 <Rice> She should have riden the Phoebe Snow, The road of Anracite, dress stays white from day to night
08:03:13 <Kevin L™> Nice runby.
08:03:26 <BruceJ> LOLs! Yeah, pretty nice runby.
08:04:22 <Kevin L™> I haven't done the Cumbres & Toltec, but may do it next year. I would love to do a fall run on it.
08:11:12 <BruceJ> Not been to the Colorado RRs at all. That may have to wait until retirement. Fall would be wonderful.
08:12:23 <BruceJ> While still employed, I have too many irons in the fire already - hobbies by the bushel, all too expensive ( ;-) ) and not just in terms of $$$ but also hours.
08:14:35 <BruceJ> So what hobbies / avocations do we have besides geysers? I have steam trains, garden RR, amateur astronomy, hiking and mountain climbing, classical music, bicycling, photography, shortwave radio/ DXing, and nail biting. Not all at once.
08:15:20 <BruceJ> Also occasional activism for various causes.
08:18:16 <Kevin L™> I am retired and find even though I have more time, it takes me longer to do things. I have the stuff for a small garden railroad and plans to do a 1½" scale railroad around the house.
08:19:16 <Dave from B™> Yes, Jake...today is Steamboat day........guaranteed:)
08:19:32 <Kevin L™> There is a great 1½" scale train layout at the museum here with over 2 miles of track.
08:19:53 <Kevin L™> Does that mean you are planning on going for it tomorrow Dave?
08:21:23 <Dave from B™> Hobbies? What's that?
08:21:54 <Dave from B™> So, now might be a good time to bring up last nights conversation in the Google Group
08:22:11 <Kevin L™> Something we do instead of playing poker.
08:22:39 <Dave from B™> playing poker isn't a hobby?
08:23:04 <Kevin L™> That was my point!
08:24:04 <Dave from B™> I'll do anything to bond with my kids...play poker included
08:24:25 <Dave from B™> Well, except play ANY type of video game
08:25:25 <Kevin L™> Pac Man?
08:27:30 <Kevin L™> Aurum over 5 days now.
08:33:57 <Dave from B™> Bruce, are you still here?
08:39:42 <Dave from B™> I wonder if Heinrich and all Giant watchers last night took a short nap and now are all at the ship in Norris
08:42:12 <Graham> hello
08:42:24 <ynpvisitor999®> morning Graham
08:42:26 <Dave from B™> Hi, Graham
08:42:29 <Kevin L™> You are early today
08:42:40 <Stephen G.> Morning Graham
08:42:47 <Graham> I expect most went to Norris given the improvements yesterdjust Tara and Micah posted frombasin...and theyhave to work
08:43:02 <Graham> lunchtime
08:44:26 <Graham> Micah said good GHP was 1-5am - guess it was a little early
08:44:59 <Graham> prediction
08:45:35 <Graham> he had late shift at the Inn
08:46:37 <Dave from B™> Did Micah make it to Giant in time?
08:46:55 <Graham> probably still at work
08:47:33 <Graham> no FB post, so i dont think he was
08:48:40 <Graham> Grotto 090, off by 0920 ... short one
08:49:03 <Graham> watch for Giant .... oh wait ... never mind
08:49:36 <Dave from B™> Does anyone have any comments about Steve Gyrc's Google post last night?
08:50:07 <Graham> havent read it yet
08:51:05 <Dave from B™> I suggest everyone read it. It is about backcountry access and the role of GOSA
08:52:14 <Kevin L™> I think he has a point Dave. I was really surprised at how many places just close by that I used to go to that are now off limits when I showed my Brother around.
08:53:07 <Kevin L™> It is sort of a mini version of what the BLM is doing to the State of Nevada.
08:54:17 <Dave from B™> I understand the NPS having to protect things. How can gazers best get access to those areas?
08:55:35 <Mike J> I agree, that Steve makes an excellent point. But I think the broader point (and one that I think has been discussed a lot before) is, what, exactly, is it that GOSA should be doing
08:56:15 <Mike J> I can read what the purpose of GOSA is, but what do we WANT the purpose to be - what do we want it to achieve
08:56:48 <Dave from B™> Agree, Mike J. It took a lot of foresight and effort to start GOSA many many years ago. I think now is the time to take a look at the organization and gazing in general to see if improvements can be made
08:57:08 <Kevin L™> I used to tell my staff not to come to me with a problem, come with a problem and a possible solution.
08:58:28 <Jake> thanks for the pointer Dave, I hadn't seen that GG post
08:58:59 <Dave from B™> I propose a broader organization with different divisions....Scientific, Resource protection, Education....we can probably think of a few others
08:59:42 <Dave from B™> And membership for anyone who wants to be a member and takes a pledge to obey rules and reg of YNP
09:00:15 <Dave from B™> Offer guided hikes to closed backcountry areas for members only
09:03:07 <Mike J> Dave, I think those are great ideas. A logistical nightmare (getting things changed, etc.), but a direction that is well worth pursuing
09:04:38 <ynpvisitor999®> SC ie
09:04:42 <ynpvisitor999®> or ns or exact
09:06:55 <Jake> what or where is GOSA's mission statement?
09:08:20 <ynpvisitor999®> Lion 1107, LC ie
09:22:04 <Dave from B™> This is from the website...
09:22:06 <Dave from B™> GOSA's purpose is the collection and dissemination of information about geysers and other geothermal phenomena in Yellowstone National Park and elsewhere.
09:22:53 <Dave from B™> I propose to somehow move to an organization that has a few paid positions. None of this will work if it is all volunteers
09:33:08 <ynpvisitor40> Dave, how do we pay these people?
09:33:30 <Jake> yes, while it is incredibly important to me, I can't comprehend doing this as a volunteer
09:34:07 <ynpvisitor999®> how about free Yellowstone trips?
09:34:20 <ynpvisitor999®> or to any geyser area in the world, actually
09:35:02 <ynpvisitor999®> Grand
09:35:04 <Jake> Grand
09:35:42 <Dave from B™> All organizations have to find a way to raise money. Anybody have some ideas?
09:35:55 <Jake> I think I fall too easily into pessimism on the subject
09:36:24 <Dave from B™> Grants from scientific companies, sales of books, guided tours,
09:36:49 <Rice> If you could do back country hikes to special geysers, you could chrage a reasonable amount, and that bring in money
09:37:07 <Dave from B™> Jake, look at all the work you've done towards the gazing community. In any other field that is rewarded with an actual paying job
09:37:40 <Dave from B™> I wish Eric was around here
09:37:54 <Dave from B™> How dare he go on vacation or disappear from here!:)
09:39:14 <Kevin L™> Amazon has a program where a percentage of purchases goes to a group. It is free and cost the customer nothing. Not a whole lot but little bits can add up.
09:39:36 <Rice> Sell Candy Bars?
09:39:46 <Dave from B™> Funding would have to come from lots of different directions
09:40:08 <Rice> Oh wait that does not work for boys scouts either, what was I thinking.
09:40:11 <Dave from B™> Anyone want to see a T-shirt with a geyser besides Old Faithful?
09:40:25 <Kevin L™> https://org.amazon.com/
09:40:39 <Kevin L™> Aurum T shirt would be a big seller.
09:41:02 <Rice> Kevin would buy 1, and then ...........
09:42:05 <ynpvisitor999®> I think selling SB T shirts over at Norris would make some profit, especially when it just went
09:42:12 <Jake> the only feasible path I see to something changing is with $, exploiting the public/private partnership that the NPS is leaning into (and the new supt mentioned in his interview).
09:43:10 <Kevin L™> 2nd!
09:43:16 <Jake> the same argument that PEER has against Verizon et al providing free services for the NPS as kickbacks for putting cell tower private infrastructure inside public lands. in the age of declining budgets, all moves have to save money
09:44:30 <Dave from B™> NPS is turning more and more towards private help since the gov't doesn't want to
09:46:22 <Jake> the Debbie Downer in me also has to remind that we are a TINY group. dwarfed by the elk (hunters), wolf, bison groups both in numbers and potential bankroll. and, on the list of YNP policies, backcountry access is waaayyyy down the list.
09:46:59 <Rice> The Pepsi Upper Basin
09:48:05 <Dave from B™> A wise man, who just retired from NPS, once told me that if you can prove that gazers are a "cultural" resource for the park, NPS must protect it.
09:48:56 <Kevin L™> Maybe we could get a gazer cemetery built there.
09:49:16 <Jake> protect it = not let anyone near it ?
09:49:43 <Jake> OH, you said gazers, not geysers :-/
09:49:49 <Dave from B™> :D
09:49:49 <Kevin L™> That is the BLM attitude in Nevada.
09:50:36 <Dave from B™> gazers have existed in the park since the late 1800's
09:51:11 <Mike J> Fundamentally, you're talking a seismic change in what GOSA is/does. Dave mentioned it in the list of things it could start doing. This is beyond backcountry access to GOSA becoming more viable in numerous areas
09:51:13 <Dave from B™> There is a chapter in Lee W's book "Storytelling in Yellowstone" on early park gazers
09:51:25 <Kevin L™> A good history book of gazing may help.
09:51:40 <Dave from B™> Exactly, Kevin
09:52:01 <Kevin L™> That would be a fun project.
09:52:03 <Dave from B™> But, it all comes down to getting funding somewhere
09:52:22 <Dave from B™> There are tons of groups that provide grants to non profits
09:55:42 <Mike J> Dave, there is a chicken and egg thing going on here. Need money before real discussion about what GOSA can do can be started, need to decide what GOSA wants to do before money can be raise.
09:56:40 <ynpvisitor999®> Based on the 1146 Turban, I suspect this was a -2Q
09:57:02 <Dave from B™> Yep, and very few foundations will give money to a "new" group
09:57:34 <ynpvisitor69> We all, including the NPS, need to remember that Yellowstone is a gift of the geysers to misquote Herodotus. The park was not established account bears, wolves or scenery. The park loves to quote the organic act. Thermals, and access to them by citizens are as organic as it gets.
09:57:42 <Dave from B™> Doesn't Disney have a foundation. He used to love the wild west:)
09:59:52 <Mike J> Obviously, this is just us "knockin' it around". But, I think it is a discussion that (just like Steve's) needs to be taken to a higher level. I have no idea who or how that is, but it is worth pursuit.
10:02:47 <ynpvisitor999®> Oblong 1000 A
10:03:27 <Dave from B™> To quote Becca's college roommate and boyfriend on their trip to YNP..."We didn't come to see waterfalls and pretty scenery, we came to see thermal features. We can see waterfalls back home"
10:03:45 <Dave from B™> Great news, DG!
10:05:15 <ynpvisitor999®> I hope it's visible on the webcam around that time, or on the logger trace when data is gathered from it
10:06:12 <Dave from B™> Thanks for keeping an open mind, Mike. It is a BIG UPHILL battle but wouldn't it be worth it?
10:08:35 <Dave from B™> Oh,no...just reading Micah's post on FB re overnight Giant. He turned his radio off and he is not happy
10:14:34 <ynpvisitor999®> Daisy
10:15:28 <Mike J> Dave, if I weren't knee-deep in a current project, I'd love to spearhead moving forward on this. (Listen to me getting all business jargony.) However, if anyone needs help on getting some movement, let me know. I might be able to grab some time.
10:16:36 <Mike J> And if anyone needs my email address, you can get it from Pat Snyder - how we contact each other on the edits to the Sput
10:17:20 <Dave from B™> Let's see what other responses there are to Steve's email
10:17:32 <Mike J> Got to cut out now. Everyone enjoy
10:18:37 <Dave from B™> Buy Mike
10:19:39 <Dave from B™> oops
10:27:55 <Dave from B™> Is that West Triplet?
10:28:01 <Dave from B™> or Spasmodic?
10:28:14 <Stephen G.> Spasmodic
10:28:16 <Dave from B™> nevermind..Spasmodic
10:28:39 <Dave from B™> IGot disoriented there for a second. Thanks, Stephen
10:29:14 <Dave from B™> Where is Art these days?
10:29:39 <Stephen G.> No problem Dave :)
10:31:55 <Kevin L™> Hanging on the walls of a museum Dave.
10:32:25 <Dave from B™> How did he end up there?
10:34:19 <Kevin L™> .
10:34:25 <ynpvisitor69> Nope, most of what I see hanging on the walls of museums is definitely not art or Art. :)
10:34:44 <Kevin L™> He was set up. He was framed and is ready to hang!
10:35:04 <Kevin L™> True 69
10:35:14 <Dave from B™> :D I'm getting stared at
10:36:14 <Dave from B™> Maybe I need to XYZ PDQ
10:36:42 <Dave from B™> I guess that would be XMZ
11:07:48 <Rice> Where does the temp come from in the weather panel? I am having a hard time believing it is 39 deg at 1pm in July.
11:08:16 <Dave from B™> mine says 75
11:09:06 <ynpvisitor999®> It says 75°F here too
11:09:09 <Rice> Huh
11:09:23 <ynpvisitor999®> seems to be an issue on your end
11:09:37 <ynpvisitor999®> Reloading the page should fix that
11:09:45 <Rice> Dawn is shown as 05:22, same for you guys?
11:10:04 <ynpvisitor999®> Tomorrow @ 05:22
11:10:21 <Stephen G.> Same for me
11:11:15 <Rice> Refreshed and Temp still 39, why would that be wrogng, but others be correct?
11:11:34 <Rice> Humm, Things that will never make sense.
11:12:21 <ynpvisitor999®> try reloading with Ctrl and F5 (or Shift, Ctrl and F5) pressed at the same time
11:12:23 <ynpvisitor999®> Castle
11:12:50 <ynpvisitor999®> (or Shift, Ctrl and R should reload too in certain browsers)
11:13:57 <ynpvisitor999®> Those combinations should all clear client-side cache for the chat page (and other websites)
11:15:53 <Kevin L™> I have 78° here but it is warmer here so that may make a difference.
11:15:58 <Rice> Cntrl - F5, Temp 39 deg
11:16:43 <Rice> And it is not C, becuase that would be 102 F
11:17:15 <Kevin L™> I believe the temp is from West Yellowstone now that OF weather station is no longer with us.
11:17:24 <Rice> The feed must get cold between WY and NY.
11:17:59 <Rice> No big deal, I can live without the temp
11:18:07 <Dave from B™> Rice, it might be time to put down your computer:)
11:18:19 <Dave from B™> Do you need a gun?
11:18:28 <Kevin L™> And Tannerite?
11:18:52 <Kevin L™> Those may be illegal in NY though
11:18:54 <Rice> Opps I spilled Coffee in it, Corporate IT can I get a new Laptop?
11:19:47 <Betty> hi gazer fellows
11:20:05 <Stephen G.> Hi Betty
11:20:07 <Kevin L™> Hello Betty
11:20:22 <Betty> hi Stephen and Kevin
11:20:32 <ynpvisitor999®> evening Betty
11:20:41 <Betty> evening DG
11:21:21 <Kevin L™> If anyone wants to see some real racing, check out Eldora Truck race on Fox Sports 1 today. Usually the best race of the year.
11:21:40 <Dave from B™> Hi Betty
11:21:58 <Betty> hi Dave from B™
11:25:34 <Betty> tomorrow our festival starts with 11 crazy days
11:26:01 <Dave from B™> Castle seems taller today
11:26:05 <Kevin L™> Betty will be tired next week.
11:26:18 <ynpvisitor999®> SC ie
11:26:23 <Betty> for sure!!!!
11:26:56 <Stephen G.> Yes - Castle is very impressive today. It looks like the wind isn't blowing yet
11:28:31 <Dave from B™> I really enjoy watching Castle water flow over its cone on the bike path side...great waterfalls
11:29:49 <Stephen G.> I agree Dave. Those waterfalls are nice.
11:31:23 <Stephen G.> Castle has also been on a nice run of majors lately. According to GT, 12 out of the last 13 eruptions have been majors.
11:31:40 <Kevin L™> A U@ just flew over my place at 60,000 feet. Only going 540 mph though.
11:31:44 <Kevin L™> U2
11:36:11 <Betty> wow, someone posted an after-Grand-Turban
11:37:47 <ynpvisitor109> Looks like they did not miss Giant last night afteral. Steam must have been pre eruption activity.
11:37:53 <Betty> OF
11:40:23 <Dave from B™> ok, Betty, let's try out your powers....hit the SB button!
11:41:55 <Dave from B™> wb, Bruce
11:43:39 <BruceJ> Hi, Guys - sorry I cut earlier - I am at work, and emergencies pop up. I saw the discussion about gaining better access to *backcountry* basins -I am in full agreement that it should go back to what it was 10 years ago, but not sure howto bets present it to the park. i have bene in favor of a compromise position, in which people may get permits for a season if they agree to take a short course
11:44:22 <BruceJ> In appropriate behavior near backcountry thermal areas. GOSA could help develop that, as we both want to observe AND protect the resource.
11:45:20 <ynpvisitor999®> I like that idea, Bruce
11:45:44 <Dave from B™> Sounds great, Bruce.
11:45:58 <Stephen G.> I like the idea as well, Bruce.
11:46:49 <Dave from B™> I'm trying to see things from NPS perspective so don't shoot me....do you think they are afraid of more publicity meaning more damage to these sights or do you think it is strictly their concern about safety around backcountry areas?
11:46:49 <Kevin L™> Maybe they could make a back country license so you would not have to take the course every trip.
11:46:57 <BruceJ> Of course, l'd rather just be able to explore as in an earlier day. geyser gazers have never cost the park anything in liability, which I am sure is the big reason for the ban.
11:47:44 <ynpvisitor999®> flag tour
11:48:44 <Dave from B™> I do know when I took a Yellowstone Institute course in the early 1990's about thermal features, our instructor was fearful about being seen off boardwalk in areas like Mud Volcano because then other tourists would think it's okay to venture off trail.
11:50:56 <Kevin L™> Money see, monkey do is a real problem.
11:52:44 <Dave from B™> yep and you know how difficult it is to keep tourists on the bw
11:52:47 <Betty> Dave, I have no powers in Norris. too much Kryptonite over there :-p
11:53:44 <Dave from B™> I have until midnight for SB to go or Jake will shame me
11:54:26 <Betty> after that it is my turn :-)
11:54:35 <BruceJ> I would be thrilled with an annual backcountry license. I do not think it wise to go offtrail in any front country area, unless on a ranger-guided tour, because people do the monkey see monkey do thing. I DO wish a few abandoned trails could be restored. The Geyser Creek and White Creek trails, the cross-Shoshone basin trail, etc. The loss of access trails is a problem in many NPs.
11:56:09 <Dave from B™> I would be interested to know, which gazers have the best relationship with the NPS. Perhaps they can advocate for the group.
11:56:39 <BruceJ> Plus, offtrail travel in the frontcountry can do visible damage to the resource, and I'd greatly prefer the most pristine view possible for the GP.
11:57:33 <Dave from B™> I do think there is some room for more front country boardwalks
11:58:25 <BruceJ> I agree - or at least better boardwalk placement. It used to be possible to visit Purple Pools; I;d love to see that again.
11:59:20 <BruceJ> And an observation point across the river for F&M would be super.
11:59:34 <Dave from B™> I'd like a round trip to the NE around Porcelain basin. There are some cool looking features out there. The bw could even go at the edge of the trees if safety is an issue
12:00:05 <Dave from B™> And, I wish something would go out towards Kaleidoscope as well
12:06:15 <Stephen G.> I agree. I know they can't build out into the Kaleidoscope group because of the danger involved with that Group, but it would be nice to have something closer than we currently have.
12:06:29 <ynpvisitor104> dome cleaner needed, Kilauea camera :)
12:13:04 <BruceJ> I think a good sample of the possible danger almost anywhere is SFP, which was not there 25 years ago, and the new pool that opened in front of Clepsydra. And look at all the sputs on Geyser Hill. You'd not want to mess with that.
12:24:07 <Coffee Milk> Wanted: Camera Dome Cleaner. Must be willing to work in close proximity to molten lava, noxious gases, and searingly hot aerial projectiles. Hard-hat, ladder, and life insurance required. Apply to USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory.
12:24:27 <Dave from B™> Trying to herd 4,000,000 people a year is no easy task. It is hard to justify building new boardwalks with fewer rangers in the budget
12:25:08 <ynpvisitor116> just got here - what is Coffee Milk?
12:28:36 <Coffee Milk> Rhode Island's state drink
12:29:17 <Coffee Milk> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_milk
12:30:10 <ynpvisitor116> ok! Not a geyser related inside joke, I see. Are you from RI?
12:30:31 <Coffee Milk> No, it's a play on words
12:31:50 <ynpvisitor116> the gang baking at Steamboat might wish they were baking at Oblong instead
12:32:00 <Coffee Milk> Nobody figured it out though :(
12:33:45 <Dave from B™> Sorry, not a coffee drinker
12:33:57 <BruceJ> As a kid in Massachusetts a half century ago, I LOVED coffee milk. In solidarity with RI. Next best thing to coffee ice cream.
12:34:46 <Betty> I like it :-)
12:34:47 <Coffee Milk> Yes, I used to import coffee syrup and make frozen banana milkshakes with it.
12:34:54 <BruceJ> It made me the neurotic Type A wreck I am today!
12:34:55 <ynpvisitor21> Storms headed for Norris
12:35:27 <Coffee Milk> Since I have friends here - Rhode Island state drink = Rhodium = Jimbo Rhodium
12:35:34 <Coffee Milk> :-}
12:36:13 <Coffee Milk> There isn't much caffeine in it
12:36:27 <Betty> ahhh, Jimbo!
12:36:37 <Coffee Milk> Gotta keep you guessing
12:37:05 <Dave from B™> haha..I was wondering where Jimbo was today:D
12:37:29 <Betty> I cannot know it for I´m not familiar with those insiders :-)
12:37:53 <Coffee Milk> Yeah, I saw BH this morning.
12:39:05 <Coffee Milk> I just have to note, that after years of wondering what a Steamboat eruption looked like up close, after visiting YNP in the 70s and 90s, the current glut of videos is just astounding.
12:40:34 <Betty> Daisy
12:42:18 <Betty> I find anything looks taller these days. Does it mean I get smaller?
12:45:39 <ynpvisitor21> Rain at West Gate
12:46:50 <Dave from B™> Betty, it might be time for new glasses
12:48:17 <Betty> I got new glasses last month. So that may be it
12:50:00 <Betty> good timing to head out early today. Have a great evening all
12:52:18 <ynpvisitor999®> night Betty
12:59:44 <BruceJ> Rhodium :D
13:10:00 <Coffee Milk> Yeah, Rhodium Island was too obvious.
13:18:31 <BruceJ> OF
13:19:14 <Dave from B™> At least once a day, the Norris seismo gets me
13:20:01 <ynpvisitor999®> It sometimes gets me too
13:20:01 <ynpvisitor104> static cam: people seeking shade under pine trees
13:21:10 <ynpvisitor999®> though YNR no longer gets me because that seismo is printing what seems to be an error 'message' multiple times a day
13:32:25 <GO OBLONG> hello
13:32:49 <ynpvisitor104> Hi Graham
13:33:18 <GO OBLONG> any shaking at Norris yet?
13:33:36 <GO OBLONG> hello ... I wonder if Oblong erupting will change Giant .. speed it up maybe?
13:34:24 <GO OBLONG> wet out at W Gate .... and looks like it will be at OF soon
13:35:25 <GO OBLONG> Tara at F&M
13:35:35 <GO OBLONG> watching otters
13:35:59 <GO OBLONG> and Aurum .... wow what else did I miss?
13:38:20 <Dave from B™> haha...104, way to "sniff" out Graham)D
13:38:49 <GO OBLONG> pretty obvious nick anyway
13:39:01 <GO OBLONG> you headed to Steamboat Dave?
13:39:08 <Dave from B™> anything in CAPS = Graham
13:39:14 <GO OBLONG> lack of news means its going soon
13:39:21 <Dave from B™> nope, it looks like I chose correctly today
13:39:57 <GO OBLONG> glad Heinrick and SUzane got Giant
13:40:38 <GO OBLONG> hope they dont get too bad a storm there
13:41:26 <Jake> is the uptick in "steady" seismo activity at Norris because of rain?
13:42:32 <Dave from B™> Jake, that is probably people driving around 15 minutes for a parking spot this time of day
13:43:41 <GO OBLONG> or everyone leaving as theres a big storm
13:44:27 <GO OBLONG> maybe its Ledge - did anyone check Seismo to see if Ledge showed up in 2015?
13:45:40 <Dave from B™> Speaking of leaving..it is time to go home. Have a great evening everyone!
13:45:51 <ynpvisitor999®> night Dave
13:46:11 <GO OBLONG> have a safe drive and stay dry .. hopeit goes for you in daylight ..
13:46:25 <Dave from B™> haha
13:47:33 <GO OBLONG> we are at 11-10-8 in the big geyser race, SB, F&M, Giant ...... F&M could pull ahead soon
13:48:02 <GO OBLONG> or at least tie for the lead
13:50:40 <ynpvisitor999®> Ledge didn't seem to appear on YNR and it seems that YNM wasn't in operation in 2015
13:50:52 <ynpvisitor999®> maybe it didn't even exist back then
13:57:18 <GO OBLONG> would have needed YNM as its closer. thanks
14:10:12 <ynpvisitor999®> Tara left F&M @ 1545
14:14:07 <GO OBLONG> works a pain
14:24:22 <GO OBLONG> clouds are brightening
14:27:32 <ynpvisitor21> Is Dave going to SB?
14:27:56 <ynpvisitor21> He might want to wait for notes tonight
14:30:25 <GO OBLONG> i dont think he is going, i was just teasing him
14:38:10 <Kevin L™> At least DaveM found an Aurum.
14:38:30 <GO OBLONG> and there was an Oblong, what a day!
14:39:04 <GO OBLONG> 2nd Oblong of the year
14:45:08 <ynpvisitor21> Maybe it’s the end of Giant
14:49:04 <GO OBLONG> nooooo
14:55:39 <ynpvisitor21> Did HK do a Giant write up on his blog?
14:56:44 <GO OBLONG> i have not been checking. i expect he got some sleep and then went to Norris. hopefully something will upload tonight
14:57:40 <GO OBLONG> erupted less than 7m after the hot period started, it seems to like the short strong hot periods
15:07:25 <GO OBLONG> turban
15:09:57 <ynpvisitor999®> Daisy
15:18:57 <ynpvisitor999®> short interval for SC
15:19:50 <GO OBLONG> another Oblong effect?
15:21:26 <ynpvisitor999®> I doubt it.
15:21:50 <GO OBLONG> Aurum did it?
15:22:26 <ynpvisitor999®> nah, I suspect OF
15:24:54 <ynpvisitor999®> Grand
15:29:38 <ynpvisitor999®> who broke the stream?
15:31:49 <GO OBLONG> ine locked too
15:31:52 <GO OBLONG> mine
15:32:49 <GO OBLONG> power out with the storm?
15:33:34 <ynpvisitor999®> it's back
15:37:32 <GO OBLONG> probably 1b, or a 2*
16:10:39 <ynpvisitor999®> Dep?
16:10:43 <ynpvisitor999®> yes
16:10:49 <ynpvisitor999®> nice burst there
16:13:12 <GO OBLONG> kitt is in the basin
16:15:35 <GO OBLONG> wonder if she was at SB?
16:19:34 <GO OBLONG> of
16:19:38 <Kevin L™> Good contrast.
16:22:59 <ynpvisitor78> is aurum ie?
16:38:17 <ynpvisitor999®> I'm calling it a day, have fun watching SC, Aurum and YNM and YNR
16:38:35 <GO OBLONG> night
16:42:07 <Rice> What does the fan and motor comment of unattended mean? It went off but no one was there, or there are no gazers watching it ?
16:42:40 <GO OBLONG> nobody is watching it
16:42:45 <GO OBLONG> and it hasnt erupted
16:43:00 <GO OBLONG> thats whu its a note, not an eruption
16:43:41 <Rice> Thanks. Still learning all these gyser time details
16:43:41 <GO OBLONG> serves multiple purposes, someone might see that and go down, and it puts a time when it was known not to have erupted in case it goes overnight
16:44:20 <GO OBLONG> most people are probably still at Norris waiting to see if Steamboat will erupt
16:46:03 <GO OBLONG> F&M are in a sweet spot for an eruption in the next 36h
17:16:24 <GO OBLONG> stepping away for a few ... bbs
17:26:38 <GO OBLONG> sc
17:37:40 <GO OBLONG> Daisy
17:50:00 <GO OBLONG> dean is in UGB and Udo posted no SB by 1700 when he left
17:53:01 <Stephen G.> I'm curious to see if anybody will post what SB's activity was like today.
17:55:48 <GO OBLONG> i expect someone will write up something at Norris and it will upload when they get in range
18:01:49 <Stephen G.> I'd think so as well. Hopefully there are some encouraging signs from today's observations.
18:02:49 <GO OBLONG> i assume so since people stayed. Udo left
18:03:13 <GO OBLONG> good luck with BH, I am out of here
18:03:41 <Stephen G.> Thanks! Have a good night Graham.
18:34:56 <ynpvisitor2> Lion ie
19:32:43 <ynpvisitor62> Hey Fluffy
19:35:44 <ynpvisitor62> a long
19:45:53 <ynpvisitor118> time for Lion
20:03:54 <ynpvisitor116> And there it is.
20:06:51 <ynpvisitor116> Riverside too.
20:13:59 <ynpvisitor116> And Daisy.
20:29:57 <Kevin L™> Note to BH watchers in the field: PLEASE don't point your lights toward the cam!
20:31:34 <ynpvisitor118> look at the MAGMA!!
20:31:37 <ynpvisitor118> it GLoWS
20:33:44 <Kevin L™> Can't see if Indy is on
20:42:48 <ynpvisitor118> yes it is annoying
20:45:06 <Kevin L™> That helps some
21:00:21 <Kevin L™> Oh well. Night1
