<Dave from B™> Hi, Stephen. What are your feeling about SB after fast Cistern fill?
06:37:32
<Stephen G.> Hey Dave. I would be thinking a potentially shorter interval; it seemed to fill very fast compared to what it had been doing this year. I would like to see some water back in Steamboat, though.
06:39:49
<Stephen G.> LC ie
06:50:16
<Dave from B™> It's fun to watch the natural progression for SB...never ever thought we would be trying to figure SB out.
06:53:57
<Stephen G.> I agree. I'd say trying to figure out SB's progression is a fun problem to have :) I never even thought I'd have the chance to see Steamboat until the week before my first trip to YNP this year.
06:55:08
<ynpvisitor999®> seen the fast Cistern fill, I think we can expect a 4-6 day interval, with the best chance on day 5
06:55:32

<Dave from B™> But, hopefully this will be the end of this issue while I'm in charge
07:11:39
<Dave from B™> Morning, Kevin...If you haven't figured out by now...today is drainfield addition day
07:14:23
<Kevin L™> I saw your comment on that. Always good to end a nagging problem. I have a couple at the house that I can't do myself and it is too hot anyway. It was easier when I could just roll up the sleeves and take care of it. Now I have trouble rolling up the sleeves.
07:18:52
<Dave from B™> I hear ya. Friend told me a good one today. Somehow he has some creeping bentgrass spots in his lawn. Only way for it to get your lawn is from a golf course (golf shoes). Have to roundup spot and replant.
07:29:48
<Kevin L™> That is really strange. I would prefer bent grass over bermuda any day though.
07:31:18
<Kevin L™> Speaking of weather here, this is a timelapse of a storm here. It was a bit north of me so it didn't get me but it knocked down about a mile of high tension power lines that they are still fixing. https://www.reviewjournal.com/weather/watch-a-thunderstorm-form-over-henderson-video/

<BruceJ> Hi Folks. Cistern refill was fast, under 3 days. Wow! Depending on how Steamboat is behaving, it may be primed by tomorrow night.
07:38:40
<Dave from B™> I've capped it so it will go over the weekend:)
07:39:54
<Stephen G.> Morning Bruce! It's looking that way. I'd expect it to go before 7 days, but it's Steamboat, so we'll see how it progresses.
07:40:04
<BruceJ> :-) BTW - that is a REALLY impressive microburst in the video. Kudos to the NWS.
07:41:19
<BruceJ> On Steamboat, I am still hoping for something Friday, but such a rapid Cistern fill suggests Thursday *if* the old pre-disturbance pattern holds. Right now, it's pure guesswork.
07:41:29
<Dave from B™> If I'm planning on Sat and Sun, you know it will go on Friday
07:42:08
<BruceJ> I hope to be there by midday on Thursday if it ha snot yet played - don't know where I'll park yet.
07:42:53
<BruceJ> Dave, will you have more time than just the weekend?
07:43:26
<Dave from B™> nope....2 Day trips unless I figure out where I'm sleeping Sat night
07:43:51
<Dave from B™> I'm missing 2 of 12 people at work so not available sooner
07:44:15

<Stephen G.> I'm*
07:51:31
<BruceJ> Thanks, Kevin - love the picture; hate to think of the sad episode the other day.
07:53:07
<BruceJ> Dave, I will be there from Th onward for up to 10 days - hope to catch you there at either Steamboat or Giant. I also have no place to stay - I hope to snare a campsite at Norris starting early Friday AM.
07:54:20
<Kevin L™> Not too often you see revenue freight being hauled by steam!
07:55:22
<BruceJ> Kevin - Surely not these days. I'd love to see more of this - but I guess steam for steam's sake is just too costly for freight.
07:55:52
<BruceJ> On my Garden Railroad, freight is never hauled by anything BUT steam ;-)
07:55:55
<Dave from B™> If SB behaves, I will definitely look for you
07:56:12
<Kevin L™> Do you have live steam?
07:56:41
<BruceJ> No - just electric. I have some other steam toys, but no engines yet.
07:57:10
<BruceJ> Built a couple of geysers too. They're fun :-)
07:57:38
<Kevin L™> I do have some geysers but not intentional.
07:58:19
<BruceJ> My railroad as of a couple years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkqLJHp3w7Y&t=19s
07:58:34
<BruceJ> Unintentional geysers. LOLZ!
07:59:11
<Kevin L™> Old sprinklers!
08:06:38
<BruceJ> Dave, if I can snag a Norris campsite, you;re welcome to crash there, rangers permitting.
08:06:57
<Kevin L™> Do you power your trains by rail or by battery Bruce?
08:08:14
<BruceJ> So far, by standard 18v DC to the rails. I'd LOVE to have battery power in each engine and dedicated freq servos to run them independently. Right now, I am planning another track loop, so I may get there eventually.
08:10:57
<BruceJ> I can run multiple engines right now, but because they are all geared a little bit differently, they run at different speeds for the same voltage - so every so often, I have to pull one train off to let the faster one pass. once I get a siding and the other loop built, that will become easier and more automatic.
08:11:23
<Kevin L™> They have a company that does bluetooth controls so you can run them off an iPad or a smartphone. I was thinking with the batteries they have for power tools now that combination would be great.
08:12:15
<Kevin L™> That engine sure looks like the Eureka.
08:13:57
<Kevin L™> Here is a link to the bluetooth controllers: http://bluerailtrains.com/
08:14:14
<Dave from B™> Bruce, I may take you up on the offer. Thanks!
08:14:22
<BruceJ> Oh yeah - battery-operated is becoming pretty common for outdoor layouts. Not only can you operate each train independently, you can also operate with dirty rails - and cleaning the railheads can become a pain after awhile. The engine is a model of the Baldwin narrow gauge 4-4-0, and in fact one paint version offered is the Eureka. I chose the unlabeled version...
08:14:45
<Stephen G.> Daisy
08:14:53
<BruceJ> ...because i wanted to put my own roadname on it. I'll get to that eventually too :-)
08:16:10
<Kevin L™> Those are fun engines. If you get to the Carson City area the museum there has two of them, one standard gauge and one narrow gauge.
08:17:46
<BruceJ> Yepp, I love them. I think the Carson City narrow gauge engine is a 2-6-0, but same general outline, although you can tell it's a bit heavier built.

13:23:49
<Kevin L™> I was thinking it may be Oblong. Giant never crossed my mind.
13:23:50
<ynpvisitor118> maybe there will be an Oblong tomorrow after this
13:24:34
<Eric> What we had an oblong? That is awesome!
13:24:34

13:28:12
<Kevin L™> Been a fun year for sure.
13:28:19
<GO OBLONG> so the score is 12 11 9 Steamboat F&M Giant
13:28:57

13:29:13
<BruceJ> I will not be surprised if SB goes again before Friday night. Or even Thursday night.
13:29:34
<Kevin L™> Thanks. That was my first try at it. I was hoping it would work. I think the kid is nuts!
13:30:04
<Kevin L™> When are you heading there Bruce?
13:30:36
<GO OBLONG> o GHP logged ... wonder if they saw the big steam first?
13:30:54
<BruceJ> I'm leaving about noon tomorrow, hope to be there by noon Th. If this keeps up, I'll have a long wait for both of them.
13:31:18
<Kevin L™> Good luck with it.
13:31:55
<GO OBLONG> how long can you stay Bruce?
13:33:53

13:34:18

13:39:37
<GO OBLONG> Just dont win the Dave award
13:40:04
<BruceJ> I agree - but it's been over a decade since I've seen Giant, and SB - never. After this rather crummy summer in particular, I need a spirit boost.
13:42:22
<Kevin L™> Just being in the park is a spirit boost.
13:42:58
<BruceJ> I cannot explain it here.

13:53:31
<Eric> They will be live broadcasting their experience...which seem gimmicky, but interesting.

14:21:11
<ynpvisitor999®> by the way, Eric, how many backups did you need to remove? I think having two backups max should do fine
14:21:22
<ynpvisitor999®> maybe three when experimenting
14:22:14
<Eric> I removed a lot :-D
14:22:26
<Eric> we now have 36GB free on that drive.
14:22:40
<ynpvisitor999®> how large are those backups actually?
14:23:01
<Eric> almost 600MB each
14:23:20
<Eric> we just need a good backup rotation scheme

14:24:24
<Eric> Anyway...it's good for the near term
14:24:57
