<Kevin L™🌵> Interesting history with the UP #844. The last steam engine UP purchased was also numbered 844. This unit and a few others were still in service but scheduled to be scrapped when the new GP30 locomotives started to arrive. The one I rode behind was in this group.

<Kevin L™🌵> Some smart soul at UP decided that they should keep the last steam engine and use it in excursion service as a historical item. Since the GP30 had the 844 roadnumber they renumber the steamer to 8444.

They were trying to find some power to get him over the hill when the engineer of the steamer told the dispatcher he had enough power to get his train over the hill while pushing the stalled train, so they did that.
