06:48:10 <GO SAWMILL> morning
06:56:50 <Kat> Good morning!
07:00:55 <Kat> OF
07:01:27 <Kat> Hi Joe
07:02:48 <GO SAWMILL> strange mot having Breakfast with Old Faithful from the benches any more
07:03:13 <Kat> Strange not seeing your great pics too!
07:03:39 <GO SAWMILL> thanks. Now you get CO pics for a whiel
07:03:55 <GO SAWMILL> loely drive over Trail Ridge Road yesterday
07:04:15 <Kat> Love them too - was there just before I came to the park!
07:04:30 <GO SAWMILL> no wind and 60 degrees was a surprise as its usually blowing hard
07:05:03 <GO SAWMILL> ah, ok. did you get a reservation or just got in before 0900?
07:05:25 <Kat> We're getting ready for some wind here in FL LOL
07:06:11 <Kat> before 9 - I'm still leery of the reservations
07:06:42 <GO SAWMILL> 0900 is easy for me from Denver, 1h45m to the gate
07:07:03 <Kat> I was in Broomfield outside of Denver
07:07:27 <GO SAWMILL> but for Bear Lake hiking its reservations after 5, hard to get any before 1100
07:07:46 <GO SAWMILL> ok, thats closer I think
07:08:23 <GO SAWMILL> they open up 25% of them at 5pm the ay before, will try and get one this week
07:08:36 <Kat> Wow -I guess it's one way to hold down the crowds. I actually left a little early from the park because the crowds just were not relaxing! :)
07:08:44 <GO SAWMILL> but still plenty of other hikes I want to do
07:08:49 <Kat> Hope you get one
07:09:29 <KorbenC> Morning all.
07:09:49 <Kat> Down basin -blinded by the steam and fog
07:09:49 <GO SAWMILL> thanks. we didnt have crowds in Rocky and I avoided them in YNP - was easy for me to do as I had a cabin at OF
07:10:19 <Kat> I was at Madison and Memorial day weekend became impossible!
07:10:34 <Kat> KorbenC, morning
07:10:35 <GO SAWMILL> i never hit any hold ups, well just one for 20min in Gibbon Canyon after an MVA
07:10:53 <Kat> that will do it!
07:10:55 <GO SAWMILL> but that was no worse than my old work commute for comparison
07:11:25 <KorbenC> Hi Kat, Graham.
07:11:30 <Kat> I should think about that - my commutes were horrendous! Sometime 2.5 hrs to Philly
07:11:49 <Dave from B™> Good morning GS and Kat
07:11:54 <Dave from B™> and Korben
07:11:54 <GO SAWMILL> I had friends staing in West and they hit one delay going out but had no problems at the gate going in
07:12:09 <GO SAWMILL> morning
07:12:14 <KorbenC> Hey Dave.
07:12:22 <GO SAWMILL> good to see you in the park Dave, that was a surprise
07:12:24 <Kat> GO SAWMILL, It's all about timing
07:12:26 <Dave from B™> Our motto was "Go when and where people aren't". I found it worked
07:12:39 <Jeff> Morning everyone
07:12:45 <Kat> Dave from B™, morning!
07:12:51 <Kat> Hi Jeff
07:13:01 <GO SAWMILL> i even found spaces in Fountain parking lot near midday
07:13:01 <Jeff> Hi kat
07:13:05 <Dave from B™> I was hoping to see you more but I know you had family to entertain:)
07:13:22 <Kat> GO SAWMILL, amazing
07:13:27 <Dave from B™> I enjoyed my first visit to Lone Star in almost 20 years
07:13:39 <GO SAWMILL> yeah, I was busy for 2 weeks. you could have found me at Sawmill near the end
07:14:03 <Kat> Loved the pic of you sitting at Sawmill waiting! :)
07:14:10 <GO SAWMILL> Kat i agree Mem day was busire, the bison were more of a problem then
07:14:22 <GO SAWMILL> they moved out later in June
07:14:52 <Kat> They were - I went and spent several days with friends at their cabin in Silvergate and did some fine wolf watching!
07:15:07 <GO SAWMILL> i was 0/1 for SB and 1/6 for F&M, so not good with bg geysers
07:15:34 <GO SAWMILL> oh good. yeah the wolves were active
07:15:36 <Kat> I spent a bit of time at Grand!
07:16:00 <Kat> 8 Junction Butte pups! So cute!
07:16:10 <GO SAWMILL> I saw the distant wolf shadows moving at Slough Creek and a clear one in Lamar on the road side of the river
07:16:48 <Kat> Great! My scope does a pretty good job for wolf watching!
07:16:53 <GO SAWMILL> saw several bears including the too close one near Grand
07:17:19 <GO SAWMILL> they were small even looking through a good scope
07:17:23 <Kat> I carried my bear spray out there in the back basin - you never know!
07:17:54 <GO SAWMILL> i didnt hear reports of them at Norris, but good thing to do, even in porcelain
07:18:36 <Kat> True - they were tiny - they're growing like weeds now - and testing their independence some
07:19:43 <GO SAWMILL> bbl
07:20:04 <Kat> Have a good one!
07:24:20 <Dave from B™> Kat, Do you have reservations for next year yet?
07:25:08 <Kat> No - I'm trying to decide if I go again in late May or not! I really like time before the holiday
07:25:39 <Kat> I'm planning to make them by August 1st
07:25:49 <Dave from B™> If crowds bother you, I would go earlier
07:26:11 <Dave from B™> There is a fine line there where wildlife viewing and weather is much worse
07:26:43 <Kat> Crowds just take away from my peace there. I like talking to people don't get me wrong but the crowds are awful!
07:27:40 <Kat> :lion:
07:29:12 <Dave from B™> I get it...maybe buy a tent and go backpacking!:)
07:29:37 <Dave from B™> I do enjoy the relative quiet at Madison CG
07:30:22 <Kat> I like Madison too! Now if the road would open from Canyon to Tower Junction I would be really happy!
07:30:37 <L> Morning
07:30:49 <Kat> L, Morning
07:31:04 <L> Kat, hi
07:31:16 <Dave from B™> Any road closures affects traffic. It is going to be fun to see the new road
07:31:49 <Dave from B™> Then, they will finish the Mammoth-Norris construction
07:31:56 <Kat> I can't wait! That road from Dunraven to Tower was sometimes scary!
07:33:10 <Dave from B™> I remember decades ago when there was talk of enclosed viewing areas near the antelope Creek area. I know pullouts need to be wider there
07:33:37 <Dave from B™> Honeymoon Ridge was a great place to scope for bears
07:33:52 <Kat> Pullouts could be better in a lot of places
07:36:00 <KorbenC> I just saw the fact that SB has now exceeded its longest interval in the series.
07:36:38 <Kat> I worry about SB
07:37:42 <KorbenC> If it doesnt come back we know that all it takes to kill it is two disturbances in rapid succession. But I am not expert, maybe it will keep going. :)
07:38:06 <Kat> One can hope!
07:40:00 <Dave from B™> I think we may have 1 or 2 SB eruptions left for this year
07:40:22 <Dave from B™> It was a good run. I feel bad for my wife and Becca
07:41:33 <9> Churn HLS delay
07:41:42 <Dave from B™> And for all gazers who didn't get to "catch" it.
07:41:43 <JarnoO> morning all
07:42:06 <JarnoO> that's a strong Churn
07:47:06 <JarnoO> darn... all loggers failed to upload
07:51:45 <JarnoO> Churn HLS delay
08:01:31 <JarnoO> and that's another WWII sea mine dealt with: https://d3isaxd2t6q8zm.cloudfront.net/omroepzeeland/media/2021/07/06/Asset_HD_Ontplofte-zeemijnen-laten-het-zand-dansen--ZNO210706OF.mp4
08:03:16 <JarnoO> they actually exploded 7 mines this morning there, tomorrow are another two explosions scheduled
08:23:03 <Kevin L™ 🌵> Where is the whale Jarno?
08:25:00 <GO SAWMILL> JarnoO - i saw that Korben flagged some of your WHirligig E times because they were not eruptions. D you have any data to indicate if any of your entries are valid?
08:25:18 <GO SAWMILL> how can you figure out the real eruptions from the false alarms?
08:25:29 <GO SAWMILL> to me they are all suspect now
08:26:11 <GO SAWMILL> not disagreeing that the logger shows something that may be of interest, but it's not good to have false entries in GT
08:29:27 <KorbenC> Graham. Agree with you 100%. Here is my data: I was sitting on the BW from 0539 to 0641 that morning. Whirligig was not in overflow at any point during that time. And at both 0541 and 0633 it was still below overflow and did not erupt. IMHO, the 0541 might be correct because the temp logger can be off by a few minutes. But unless the 0633 time was off by 8 minutes than it did not happen.
08:31:02 <Kevin L™ 🌵> 5.2 quake in Hawaii
08:31:23 <GO SAWMILL> so did it erupt 0633 +-8m?
08:31:32 <KorbenC> No
08:32:02 <KorbenC> During my observation from 0539 to 0641 there was no eruption.
08:32:04 <GO SAWMILL> or are we just capturing overflow - in which case they should all be deleted?
08:32:37 <GO SAWMILL> or just flow from somewhere else
08:32:40 <KorbenC> Funny thing is there wasnt even overflow during that period. So whatever the entries might be they were not Whirligig that time.
08:32:44 <JarnoO> Graham, the logger trace showed them. No data around these eruptions suggest the logger was malfunctioning at the time. It was cross-checked with in-basin entries two days before and after, which all lined up. The logger was running 4-5 minutes slow at the time
08:32:57 <GO SAWMILL> it could be COnstant flow or pinwheel area
08:33:24 <GO SAWMILL> but it still didnt erupt jarnoO
08:33:30 <KorbenC> JarnoO, a few of your entries from the day after were 9 minutes off, so you likely got the time of the push instead of the eruption
08:33:39 <GO SAWMILL> so the logger just tells you if the temp changed, not if an eruption occurred
08:33:46 <JarnoO> as any logger does
08:34:05 <GO SAWMILL> now we know some of them are not eruptions it puts them all into question
08:34:18 <GO SAWMILL> unless there is an observer present
08:34:49 <GO SAWMILL> or they should all be marked as questionable now
08:34:49 <KorbenC> (I am not going to drop names) but other people in basin have times that are 15 minutes off, which aren't Whirligig.
08:36:25 <Kat> OF
08:36:42 <GO SAWMILL> if you can find something in the data that distinguishes eruptions from non-eruptions you can make beter guesses at the data, but if you can't find any distinguishing features you shouldnt be entering them in my opinion
08:37:34 <GO SAWMILL> i used to work with some signal processors and they would be all over any data that has truthing that goes against what the algorithm says is an eruption
08:37:44 <KorbenC> Couldn't agree more Graham.
08:38:14 <GO SAWMILL> tried to get the false alarm rate down low. i have no idea how good the eruption calls are for electronic data
08:39:01 <GO SAWMILL> anyway, thats my opinion, the times should be removed if we dont have confidence in them
08:39:40 <KorbenC> I would argue that for alot of E data the times are accurate because there is a very clear signal that always indicates there is an eruption (like the SB logger) but with Whirligig there are many features that can mimic the water and temp output of a Whirligig minor
08:40:36 <KorbenC> GO SAWMILL, correct me if I am wrong, but there is not much confidence in person of them, at least it seemed that way when people were talking to me about it.
08:42:14 <GO SAWMILL> i dont know about other people, i just saw you flagged a couple so that makes me ask if the E times are any good
08:42:33 <KorbenC>
08:42:55 <GO SAWMILL> it' not good or GT to have known bad data. i assume the flagged ones were deleted at least, but there are so many other entries that are now questionable
08:43:19 <GO SAWMILL> at least we are not using the data to launch missiles at anything :)
08:43:35 <Kat> GO SAWMILL, LOL
08:43:44 <KorbenC> Graham, Jarno is not deleting the entries suggesting that he has "no reason to believe the eruptions did not happen".
08:45:15 <GO SAWMILL> well thats absurd. if theres an observer that says it didnt happen they should be removed
08:45:48 <GO SAWMILL> if you dont pay attention to the truthing them the electronic entries are worthless
08:45:54 <KorbenC> Yes. In person truth should take power over the word of a sensor that picks up many other features.
08:46:11 <Katie> Morning, all
08:46:13 <GO SAWMILL> sorry JarnoO, if that' why you are not deletingthem I dont understand or agree with you
08:46:16 <JarnoO> This is an excerpt of a June 22 where E times were cross-checked with in-basin ones: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MrXavK3RJfCOFEYYByr95Lq5MEPpjCl7/view?usp=sharing
08:46:38 <JarnoO> The entries that Korben flagged looked no different from those here
08:46:51 <JarnoO> of June 22*
08:47:06 <KorbenC> Jarno, and I have an excerpt of June 24th where E times were cross-checked with in-basin ones and were wrong.
08:47:39 <KorbenC> So it's not that we are saying they are all wrong but that there are examples where they are wrong. Other people have times that were so far off you couldnt even consider entering them but don't want to get involved by flagging them/
08:48:27 <GO SAWMILL> yeah, you have to py attention to the truthing, both for good entries and bad ones
08:48:34 <GO SAWMILL> you can't cherry pick the good ones
08:48:54 <GO SAWMILL> what you have to do is compare the good and bad data to see if theres a difference
08:49:13 <GO SAWMILL> if you cant find a difference then the false alarm rates will be high
08:49:35 <GO SAWMILL> you should at least delete ones where theses an observation that says there was no eruption
08:50:16 <JarnoO> Constant's temperature (or for that matter anything that reaches the logger which isn't from Whirligig, Pinwheel being the sole exception to date) are the points which, except for 1515:26 E min, sit well below the temperature of Whirligig eruptions
08:50:57 <GO SAWMILL> but theres water from other features too
08:51:04 <KorbenC> JarnoO, you said a few days ago that the logger temps for Constant cant get above 25C which is how you determine if it is constant or Whirligig.
08:51:26 <GO SAWMILL> and constant has some very heavy overflows
08:51:38 <GO SAWMILL> when you look at the data that got flagged, what do you see in it?
08:51:47 <JarnoO> let me grab that
08:52:34 <GO SAWMILL> you shoudl be looking at that closely, not jus twhere theres agreement
08:55:04 <JarnoO> This is readout for those of June 24 (the flagged ones): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MQ92ADoMn0eyth9gTqJsRYZ8dsBvcA0l/view?usp=sharing
08:55:37 <GO SAWMILL> also on the data you sent i dont now how you could say 1515 was a minor
08:55:43 <GO SAWMILL> can you explain?
08:57:16 <JarnoO> non-minors commonly make it over 45°C with at least one of their data points at that point in time
08:58:05 <GO SAWMILL> but you had a major that wasnt an eruption based on Korbens truthing
08:58:31 <GO SAWMILL> so thats how you "decide" if its a Whirligig major, but it can be something else
09:00:01 <GO SAWMILL> you have a theory on how to interpret the data. Truthing shows it's not 100% accurate
09:00:25 <JarnoO> as for that specific minor @ 1515:26 E, even without the in-basin entry I'd likely picked it out as I've done Whirligig from the logger for a few years now. Kind of like pattern recognition
09:00:26 <GO SAWMILL> do we care that inaccurate data gets into GT without ? on the entry?
09:00:57 <GO SAWMILL> i dont see how 1515 entry gets an E time, it doesnt look distinct to me
09:01:19 <JarnoO> it does for me
09:01:28 <GO SAWMILL> do you understand what I am getting at?
09:02:08 <JarnoO> I do
09:02:17 <GO SAWMILL> what about the peak afte 1415 thats hotter?
09:02:38 <GO SAWMILL> given there are a lot of other water flows, they are both not much over background
09:03:31 <GO SAWMILL> how frequetly is data sampled here?
09:04:08 <JarnoO> 1415 is from Constant. Occasionally Constant does "a thing" where, for a few hours, its trace becomes irregular spikes rather than smooth waves
09:04:10 <GO SAWMILL> still curious about the ones where we know there wasnt an eruption
09:04:34 <JarnoO> Data is sampled frequently, but it only saves a sample every two minutes
09:04:51 <JarnoO> else storage would fill up rapidly
09:05:38 <JarnoO> after 1415 is from Constant*
09:05:51 <GO SAWMILL> ok, and minors are so short its hard to know what its picking up
09:06:22 <GO SAWMILL> what about the flow from the basin?
09:06:32 <GO SAWMILL> how do you interpret that and its variability?
09:06:59 <GO SAWMILL> but after 1425 looks like what you flagged as a minor
09:07:07 <GO SAWMILL> after 1415
09:07:28 <Kat> Sawmill
09:07:48 <GO SAWMILL> how do you "assume" it was constant just looking at the data?
09:09:04 <JarnoO> Constant logger doesn't pick up everything from the basin, only Constant and surroundings, which include Whirligig and Pinwheel. Little Whirligig would like be recorded on the logger as well, but that one hasn't been seen for many years. Constant's trace is pretty much "background noise", Whirligig shows up prominently and Pinwheel is so rare it's not really a factor to take into account unless...
09:09:05 <JarnoO> ...there are in-basin observations of Pinwheel
09:09:43 <JarnoO> the spike after 1415 is Constant because Whirligig happened shortly before. I look at the grand picture, not every data point individually
09:10:02 <GO SAWMILL> but Jarnoo - there is a lot of water flowing there tht doesnt come from COnstant, Pinwheel, or Whirligig
09:10:25 <KorbenC> That makes no sense Jarno, just because Pinwheel is rare doesnt mean it cant severly alter the data set
09:10:50 <GO SAWMILL> you still have not answered my basic question of why you think 1515 is Whirligig just from the data?
09:10:54 <JarnoO> at the time Whirligig minors happened about every 45-90 minutes or so, which rules out that the spike after 1415 is Whirligig
09:11:14 <GO SAWMILL> thats not true
09:11:27 <KorbenC> Jarno, that is wrong.
09:11:29 <GO SAWMILL> whirligig minors can be more frequent
09:11:33 <GO SAWMILL> or less
09:11:36 <JarnoO> but they weren't at the time
09:11:43 <KorbenC> Whirligig can have very short intervals or 3 hour intervals.
09:12:02 <KorbenC> How do you know they weren't were there hours of constant in person observation?
09:12:07 <GO SAWMILL> thats like saying an eruption of riverside cant be less than 5h
09:12:18 <GO SAWMILL> or Daisy doesnt go more than 7 hours
09:12:31 <GO SAWMILL> you cant rely on a pattern
09:12:49 <KorbenC> Well said Graham, very well said!
09:13:48 <JarnoO> I know Whirligig minors can occur more frequently, however, it's a gradual process. Just now Whirligig minors are speeding up, occurring every 20 to 60 minutes, whereas a few weeks ago that was 45 to 90 or so
09:14:15 <JarnoO> just like Riverside's intervals shorten up gradually
09:14:17 <GO SAWMILL> well you shouldn't assume you "know" how it will behave on any given day
09:14:24 <JarnoO> as did Daisy';s
09:14:39 <GO SAWMILL> its a geyser as are the many other features that put water over that sensor
09:15:01 <GO SAWMILL> any luck in getting the data that Korben truthed for you?
09:15:24 <GO SAWMILL> riverside and daisy can suddenly jump too
09:15:33 <JarnoO> but none frequently active one runs water over the probe with such spikes
09:15:44 <JarnoO> note the keyword here is "frequently"
09:16:35 <JarnoO> I hate playing this card, but MAB backs me with the flagged Whirligig entries
09:16:37 <GO SAWMILL> that is your assumption. we know a lot of features run water over that probe. has anyone looked to ee if pinwheel has changes in its flow? or the 20+ other features upstream?
09:16:59 <GO SAWMILL> so you believe JarnoO was wrond sitting right there observing?
09:17:05 <GO SAWMILL> i mean Korben
09:17:12 <GO SAWMILL> thats not credible to me
09:17:22 <GO SAWMILL> and MA wasnt there either
09:18:35 <GO SAWMILL> two people that were not there disagreeing with the one person that was?
09:18:57 <GO SAWMILL> anyway, if you can show us the data that was false eruptions I would like to see it. i have to leave now tho
09:19:32 <Kat> Bye Graham
09:19:37 <JarnoO> What Korben described is typical post-non-minor behavior. After a non-minor, Whirligig needs some time to recover to overflow. The previous non-minor happened the day before. By the time Korben was there it would have well and truly recovered and having minors, so the pool would be at or near overflow
09:20:22 <KorbenC> JarnoO, what I described was that the eruption did not happen. It is quite simple. It. Did. Not. Happen.
09:20:25 <JarnoO> (and having minors)*
09:20:46 <KorbenC> Bye Graham, have a good one.
09:20:48 <JarnoO> have you already found those pictures you said you took?
09:21:29 <JarnoO> and were you only in the basin for less than an hour sitting at Whirligig?
09:21:37 <KorbenC> JarnoO, more worried about getting my Sawmill videos! More worried about recovering my foot (which I may have overused) and I got home from YNP like 10 days ago.
09:22:09 <KorbenC> and yes, I was the only person (besides my dad) who was there. There was a gazer at Steamboat and 2 other visitors back in Porcelain.
09:24:23 <GO SAWMILL> you also shoudnt assume it was having minors
09:25:05 <GO SAWMILL> i will look at the data when its available and i am back. see ya.
09:25:20 <JarnoO> then how would you explain the spikes? Think horses, not zebras
09:25:35 <KorbenC> Bye Graham. Enjoy.
09:25:49 <KorbenC> Jarno, I would explain the spikes with one of the many other features back there
09:25:52 <Dave from B™> Spikes don't mean something everytime you see them
09:26:22 <KorbenC> The steam was blowing back into the other features. So I couldo nly see Whirligig and Constant (and a very nice morning ledge)
09:26:23 <Dave from B™> Sometimes, you can't be certain what is causing them...that's the point
09:26:31 <KorbenC> Dave, that is another very good point.
09:27:14 <JarnoO> did you see any other heavy flow of water going below the boardwalk at the time, then?
09:27:57 <JarnoO> Riverside
09:28:01 <JarnoO> HLS delay
09:28:18 <KorbenC> There were the common increases and decreases in runoff as always. But if you are asking if there was a Steamboat flood htat cam down the chanel, nope. If there was a massive flow of water flooding the runoff chanel suddenly I would have freaked out, lol
09:46:22 <Betty> hi all
09:46:58 <L> Betty, hi
09:46:58 <KorbenC> Hi Betty
09:47:12 <Betty> hi Linda and KorbenC
09:47:24 <Kat> Hi Betty
09:47:35 <Betty> hey Kat
09:58:30 <Betty> Tilts Baby pool is full :-)
09:59:13 <Kat> Csm is freezing up!
09:59:17 <KorbenC> Will is back in basin :)
09:59:23 <Kat> Cam*
09:59:45 <Kat> ON OF for Kevin :)
09:59:53 <Kevin L™ 🌵> Now to see if the cam likes me today. :P
10:00:50 <Betty> at least we  you Kevin L™ 🌵, :-D
10:02:08 <KorbenC> Kevin L™ 🌵, good luck
