08:44:30 <KorbenC> Steam from BSB
08:44:42 <Kat>
08:44:58 <KorbenC> West Bubblers seem to be on
08:46:42 <KorbenC> Hi Ryan
08:47:38 <Ryan> Good morning.
08:48:03 <Ryan> Interesting event on the Echinus logger. Same time as the Steamboat eruption.
08:49:19 <KorbenC> Apparently it boiled up a foot or two during Boat
08:51:30 <Ryan> Neat.
08:52:19 <Ryan> Wow the Firehole looks swollen.
08:52:42 <Ryan> The rain is visible on both Echinus and Constant loggers, too. Dang.
08:52:53 <KorbenC> and Beehive is dead :)
08:53:10 <Kat> Ryan, everything is rising or flooding it seems - they have evacuated Roosevelt!
08:54:04 <Ryan> Looks dry to me ;)
08:54:27 <Katie šŸŒ»> Red Lodge is flooded, slides all over, Tom Miner Bridge washed out, 2 bridges in Cooke washed out... crazy all over
08:55:02 <KorbenC> I hope ill be able to get into the park this weekend, lol
08:55:15 <Ryan> Yikes. Guess y'all aren't used to this, eh?
08:55:28 <Katie šŸŒ»> Unless the north entrance has opened, people in Gardiner are stuck in Gardiner and people in Silvergate/Cooke City are likewise stuck there.
08:56:09 <Kat> Looks like North has opened - I thin Mammoth to Tower is still closed
08:56:28 <Kat> think*
08:56:34 <Katie šŸŒ»> I don't think anyone ever gets used to flooding. It happens more in some places, but I don't think people in those places get used to it, per se.
08:57:13 <Kat> :daisy:
08:58:09 <Ryan> I think some places are built more for it because it happens more often. Flooding happens, but it is not usually disruptive. Or in this case, geologically destabilizing.
08:59:20 <Ryan> In SWPA, West Virginia, and here in Maryland we have flooding events probably 3-6 times a year - usually during the late winter into early spring, but rarely in mid-summer. I can only think of maybe one or two events which caused actual disruptive problems.
08:59:49 <Katie šŸŒ»> There is a field north of Lolo (where I live) that is Bitterroot River flood plain. It floods every year. It's used for bison pasture. I've never seen it as flooded as it is now. Including the year, what, 5-6 years ago that Missoula had urban flooding.
08:59:50 <Ryan> But the opposite holds true for some weather events. Annapolis literally shuts down if there is more than a half inch of snow.
08:59:52 <Kat> OF
09:00:39 <Ryan> Last January we had a snow event which dropped 7 inches in four hours. The entire DC metro area physically slid to a halt.
09:00:53 <Ryan> That type of event is just a casual Tuesday for you guys.
09:02:03 <Kat> Ryan, DC always comes a halt! LOL
09:02:05 <Katie šŸŒ»> I wouldn't want to be in areas prone to slides today. It's not over.
09:02:40 <Ryan> Kat, ha! Fair. I think there were motorists stuck on 495 and 95 for up to 12 hours that day.
09:03:56 <Ryan> Katie, thats more what I was getting at - the slides. We routinely have very high water events which flood bridges, streets, homes, etc. But it is not very often we have landslides and similar structural failures of natural features.
09:04:30 <Kevin Depot> We have some wicked flooding here. The ground is so dry it doesn't soak in so it just rolls quickly through everything. Our place missed the Zion flood. Heavy damage north and south of us.
09:04:55 <Ryan> In 2016 we had what most called a 1000 year flood. For cavers we have evidence it was more like a 10,000 year flood. We went into a normally dry cave two days later and found all the formations destroyed and flood debris on the ceiling.
09:05:40 <Ryan> Those formations likely took over 10,000 years to form and were extremely delicate. Any flood of any kind would have destroyed them. I think over a hundred people died in southern WV that summer.
09:05:50 <Kat> Still steaming!
09:05:57 <Ryan> It was something like 10-11inches of rain in only ten hours.
09:06:23 <Ryan> That type of flooding we were definitely not used to!
09:06:38 <Ryan> Well, hang in there. Stay alert and vigilant.
09:07:27 <Kat> Cam is rockin'
09:07:48 <Katie šŸŒ»> Ryan, we have had unusual rainfall this spring in the Northern Rockies, but the real issue is we got late snow (still getting it in Northwest Montana) - delayed snowmelt. Then, in Yellowstone area, warmish rain, which accelerated snowmelt so too much snowmelt all at once + the rain.
09:08:33 <Ryan> Gotcha. that is what our late winter/early spring floods usually are. Saturated ground gets several inches of snow and then it warms up and rains.
09:09:12 <Ryan> The Great Falls of the Potomac turns scary. Really, really, scary.
09:09:42 <Katie šŸŒ»> I drove to Anaconda this weekend. The green is like Fugi Velvia exaggerated green - in areas, it almost looks cartoonish.
09:11:01 <Ryan> Someone should go take a photo of it with Velvia and a polarizer.
09:12:44 <Ryan> Korben - safe to say its a bit humid there now?
09:17:30 <KorbenC> Ryan, I think so
09:18:20 <Kevin Depot> Oh oh, Katie killed the cam.
09:19:38 <Katie šŸŒ»> Kevin Depot, I haven't even touched the cam, yet. Not guilty!
09:20:36 <Kat> I'm guilty! LOL I got kicked out and cam was doing a spin and stopped on the roof! CPU's are good as Brett rebooted early this AM
09:22:04 <Kat> It's going to be one of those days! Down !
09:22:51 <Kat> Can't get back in yuet
09:23:48 <Kat> yet*
09:24:02 <Kat> GT page is just looping
09:25:04 <Kat> may just be weather or no electric
09:25:45 <KorbenC> Static hasnt updated since 920
09:25:45 <Katie šŸŒ»> static hasn't updated for 5 minutes. I'm betting power is out.
09:26:04 <Kat> Me too - I'm checking now
09:26:47 <KorbenC> cam is on roof
09:27:30 <Kat> Korben - are you on control cam?
09:27:45 <KorbenC> kindof?
09:28:08 <KorbenC> I am linked directly with the cam, like the camops, but I am not on the control screen.
09:29:14 <Kat> Using the IP address I assume. I can't get back in !
09:30:23 <KorbenC> someone got into the cam :)
09:30:26 <Katie šŸŒ»> static still hasn't updaged
09:30:46 <Kat> I got off roof to the hill
09:31:59 <Kat> got the cam off the roof! LOL
09:33:27 <Kat> Katie šŸŒ», updated now, most likely a brief power issue
09:34:34 <KorbenC> Hi Craig
09:35:07 <Kat> Just a minor power hiccup! To be expected in this weather!
09:35:15 <CraigC> appears to be a little windy in the park
09:35:18 <Kat> Howdy Craig!
09:35:28 <CraigC> hey Kat :)
09:35:58 <CraigC> is there any footage posted of the conditions around the north entrance?
09:39:03 <Kat> On the Mammoth Gardiner Community Message Board - MA posted on FB. They have a FB page! The Tom Minor Bridge washed out!
09:39:25 <Kat> River is carrying trees and debris
09:40:14 <Kat> There is a video of Tom Minor going down there as well! Scary!
09:40:39 <KorbenC> Oh wow, that is crazy
09:41:05 <CraigC> Kat, found it, watching video now, thanks
09:41:17 <Kat> Sure!
09:43:23 <Kat> Linda Carney posted another video of bridge and debris floating
09:44:21 <KorbenC> Grand was probably missed
09:44:58 <Kat> Most likely early tis morning - cam was sitting on roof!
09:45:06 <Kat> this*
09:45:35 <Ryan> I heard a report that power just went out at Mammoth and OF.
09:45:51 <Ryan> Which is odd if this the cam is running
09:45:58 <Kat> Cam still running
09:46:08 <KorbenC> for now :)
09:50:20 <Kat> Now there's a Boil Water Alert in Gardiner - water main break!
09:59:48 <Katie šŸŒ»> I was able to log in.
10:00:09 <Kat> Excellent! Have a good drive!
10:00:16 <Katie šŸŒ»> Thanks!
10:07:27 <Kat> bbl
10:09:45 <Kat> Just saw a video from Red Lodge - it's bad!
10:10:06 <KorbenC> Kat, I am looking for videos, is it on FB somewhere?
10:11:11 <Katie šŸŒ»> I saw Red Lodge photos and videos, but I don't remember where.
10:11:21 <CraigC> Janet Jones posted videos
10:11:31 <KorbenC> thx Craig
10:11:38 <Katie šŸŒ»> Oh! Under Jim Holstein's post about conditions (pinned post) on the Hub
10:11:46 <CraigC> I shared the one she posted of Red Lodge
10:14:40 <Kat> CraigC,
10:15:55 <Katie šŸŒ»> Jason Mathhws just posted in Hub that Mammoth Hotel is being evacuated
10:16:51 <CraigC> wow, entire park entrances closed
10:17:07 <Kat> CraigC, That's the video I saw of Red Lodge!
10:17:50 <CraigC> I don't remember any time in my life of park closing in June
10:17:54 <Katie šŸŒ»> WOW!
10:18:21 <KorbenC> CraigC, where do you see the entire park entracnes are closed?
10:18:40 <CraigC> also, I don't remember what I did yesterday
10:19:01 <CraigC> Korben GT event
10:19:16 <KorbenC>
10:19:59 <KorbenC> Hopefully they resolve this soon
10:20:18 <Katie šŸŒ»> "they" can't control weather
10:20:44 <KorbenC> true :)
10:21:00 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> It got shutdown in July 1988.
10:21:35 <CraigC> the fire year.... I was there several times in 88, I didn;t remember it being closed, though
10:22:18 <6> It did close at one point, only admin travel. That was in Sept I think, in 88
10:22:52 <6> How do they evacuate Mammoth? To West?
10:23:40 <Katie šŸŒ»> We went several times in '88, too. They didn't charge admission and my Dad thought that was silly since so many people (like us!) were going to see the historic fire (aftermath). Entrances closed and reopened and closed again.
10:24:00 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Looks like people are coming in the west entrance.
10:24:30 <CraigC> then turning around, look at other cam
10:24:42 <KorbenC> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, looks morel like turning them around
10:24:45 <6> Itā€™s so backed up, theyā€™ll have to let them in and turn them around
10:25:13 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> We were going out the day the fires went nuts. We were heading to the south entrance but got rerouted to west.
10:27:08 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Yes, the cam showing the road into the park is turning them.
10:27:09 <6> West will be busy
10:28:01 <6> Quite a few cars going down the road too
10:28:24 <CraigC> another week I am not envious about not being there
10:29:07 <Kat> Looks like folks are leaving as well
10:30:12 <401> Zak
10:31:05 <Katie šŸŒ»> There was a guy that posted in Hub a couple days ago about releasing campground reservation for Pebble Creek for this coming weekend. I considered grabbing it. I was there on reservation.gov to do so. And then I reconsidered due to forecast.
10:32:30 <Kat> Smart choice Katie - it's flooded I heard
10:33:44 <Kat> Hi Lori
10:34:14 <DougB> what a mess
10:34:20 <6> So Mammoth will have to evacuate to West. I bet West will run out of lodging
10:34:31 <CraigC> chatroom getting more traffic with the crazy weather events
10:35:44 <Lori S> Hi Kat & all. Think I will skip my planned trip to the grocery store today!
10:35:45 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> I wonder if they will let our gazers stay.
10:35:48 <Katie šŸŒ»> Ad/mods of Hub expected a busy day because Blondie's three cubs were killed by a boar. Other events have taken the stage
10:36:09 <6> All 3?
10:36:51 <6> Still no end to line at West Gate
10:37:34 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Bummer about the cubs.
10:37:52 <6> Still no text that all gates are closed from NPS
10:40:36 <CraigC> Katie šŸŒ», did someone witness the boar kill them? I only read that that haven't been seen with mom
10:40:46 <6> OF
10:41:11 <Katie šŸŒ»> That is what I have heard second/third hand, but through reliable channels.
10:41:47 <CraigC> sad
10:43:43 <Kat> very sad!
10:44:19 <6> Text received about gates closing
10:44:42 <Kat> Got it too
10:44:51 <6> I wonder if Madison and OF guests get to enter still?
10:45:10 <Lori S> Nice view of the Firehole UPSTREAM
10:45:24 <KorbenC> Lori S, where?
10:45:43 <Lori S> Cars pulled over near us probably with maps out
10:46:07 <Kat> Water is moving fast here
10:46:12 <Lori S> KorbenC, I mean below Bee/hill
10:46:47 <KorbenC> Lori S, wait what? I am confused, lmao
10:46:52 <Kat> Thinking they may believe they can get in another way
10:47:29 <Kat> All those cars at west are going nowhere
10:47:43 <KorbenC> Gibbion River at Madison is 6.92ft, 0.52ft over the previous record :(
10:48:17 <CraigC> Seems strange that park personnel are not turning cars around down that line
10:48:30 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Firehole is high for sure.
10:48:59 <Kat> You would think there would be several turn around points - but I'm sure they are really busy!
10:49:00 <KorbenC> Most rivers are expected to reach there peak around 1230 according to NOAA
10:49:05 <Lori S> KorbenC, look at the river on the cam! šŸ™ƒ
10:49:05 <6> Nowhere to turn them to
10:49:33 <6> Until they stop things at stop light
10:49:37 <Lori S> I am staying home today!
10:50:06 <Lori S> 2 planes flew over recently
10:50:07 <6> Maybe West police will help with that
10:50:14 <CraigC> any kind of management would be better than none
10:50:34 <Kat>
10:51:01 <Lori S> CraigC, Whatcha sayin. I should go hold up a big sign?
10:51:06 <6> Turning around after gate is the management right now
10:51:20 <CraigC> Lori S, there ya go
10:51:24 <Kat> Lori S, lol
10:53:43 <Kat> Latest Press Release says they have not yet begun to assess the southern portions of the park
10:54:39 <CraigC> getting flashbacks to Walking Dead... bridge washing out LOL
10:54:59 <Kat>
10:56:25 <KorbenC> Kat, do you have a link to that press release?
10:57:09 <6> If Mammoth to Norris is closed too, how do they evacuate people?
10:57:39 <KorbenC> 6, they may make an exception for ppl. evacuating
10:58:11 <CraigC> "Good luck"
10:59:38 <DanS working> There is a one-way gravel road that goes over the hill from Mammoth to Gardner, but you won't get much further north due to US 89 closure.
11:04:08 <6> If 191 floods at Greek Creek, another route will be closed
11:04:44 <Lori S> Airport in Wrst can take larger planes.
11:05:00 <Lori S> West
11:05:30 <6> Kind of crazy they have not cut the line at West Gate off yet.
11:05:34 <Kat> KorbenC, looking for it
11:05:56 <Lori S> 6, You mean at Boundary st?
11:06:32 <Lori S> My big sign idea is sounding better.
11:06:42 <6> Yes, for one. And at stop light
11:06:47 <Kat> KorbenC, https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/news/220613.htm
11:07:50 <Lori S> 6, I would guess traffic is bscking up to west & north ends of town by now.
11:09:43 <LindaG> Wow just saw all the weather news! Yikes!
11:09:49 <6> Police should help out
11:10:06 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> You can really see the water level in this view.
11:10:11 <Kat> Pics from NPS -rescue Creek Bridge washed out https://www.flickr.com/photos/yellowstonenps/albums/72157668680150793
11:10:29 <KorbenC> Poor Fan and Mortar :(
11:10:50 <LindaG> Wow trapped in yellowstone that would be interesting

11:12:31 <LindaG> What's the temperature?
11:12:42 <LindaG> Lori S, hello Lori hello
11:12:43 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> I hit my scroll button when I looked at the flickr site and there was a fish on it.
11:12:51 <CraigC> hope he doesn't have to add a new chapter about people who died of exhaust poisoning in line at the entrance
11:13:07 <Lori S> LindaG, 44 ish in west
11:13:41 <LindaG> Hmmm could turn to snow
11:13:49 <LindaG> Tonight
11:13:53 <Lori S> I am not even going to the post office today!
11:13:59 <CraigC> Lori S, is it as windy as how it looks on geyser hill?
11:14:06 <Lori S> LindaG, snow in forecast
11:14:13 <Lori S> CraigC, yes
11:14:18 <6> Hopefully the cold temps will slow the melt
11:14:21 <CraigC> dang
11:14:22 <LindaG> Lori S, :-/
11:14:34 <LindaG> 6, true
11:14:56 <Lori S> CraigC, I expected a house to land on us when i walked doggo
11:14:58 <CraigC> I hate high wind more than rain or snow when on vacation
11:15:23 <LindaG> Lori S, šŸ˜®
11:15:30 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> My Daughter was in West Saturday but decided not to go to the park due to the rain. Grandsons found every puddle and were soaked.
11:15:41 <Katie šŸŒ»> I wasn't even touching cam when it jumped - I was trying to type here - minor flooding there on Firehole
11:15:54 <Kat> I hate high wind too - especially here in FL - everything is tied down!
11:16:23 <6> I wonder how it is at Biscuit Basin area. That often floods in normal years
11:16:27 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> And hurricane season is coming.
11:16:39 <LindaG> Can't do nothing in high winds. Birding is near mpossibl lol
11:16:50 <Lori S> So, look at the ynm. Anyone think maybe thats the raging Gibbon making noise?
11:17:41 <Kat> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, yep! I hate hurricane season! I get prepared with some stuff way before and have it on hand!
11:17:43 <LindaG> Why does yft look Ike steamboat
11:17:43 <CraigC> Lori S, how is the Madison?
11:17:44 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Yesterday I saw several quail fly by. I think they were trying to walk though.
11:18:09 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, lol
11:18:21 <Kat> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, funny!
11:18:32 <Lori S> LindaG, ynm shows a steamboatish trace but i think it
11:18:33 <LindaG> Glad I'm going to grand canyon and not yellowstone next wek

11:18:48 <Kat> LindaG,
11:19:06 <LindaG> Lori S, yft does too
11:19:17 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Don't think you will see much rain there Linda but wind may be an issue.
11:19:21 <Lori S> CraigC, no idea. i havent even had breakfast yet
11:20:08 <Lori S> LindaG, ohhhh geez. look at that
11:20:23 <LindaG> LindaG, šŸ˜§
11:20:35 <Kat> Must be someone with a sign at the light - I se the end of the line! LOL
11:20:56 <6> Finally!
11:21:05 <CraigC> LindaG, I hope the Colorado is not overflowing the Grand Canyon while you are there
11:21:13 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, šŸ™
11:21:33 <Lori S> LindaG, look at ymv

11:22:10 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Are you going to take the train in Linda?
11:22:19 <LindaG> Lori S, wow
11:22:44 <Lori S> Kat, end of the line in anyway:D
11:22:47 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, I'll be at north rim, driving there from zion
11:23:45 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> OK, I guess not. I like the north rim better. A lot more laid back.
11:24:19 <6> Do stay home today Lori S!
11:24:21 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, yeah was there overnight once always wanted to go back

11:27:39 <Katie šŸŒ»> Running out of food due to being unable to leave
11:27:42 <CraigC> gas driving home early is more than lodging now LOL
11:27:55 <Lori S> CraigC, true
11:28:06 <Katie šŸŒ»> I always have a week extra worth of supplies when I go camping in Park - but I'm probably an exception
11:28:17 <CraigC> I spent $160 for 2 fishing trips this weekend
11:28:23 <Lori S> CraigC, all that idling at the gate. oh my
11:28:26 <CraigC> $160 in gas
11:28:37 <Kat> Here's link to most recent NPS update https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/news/220613.htm
11:29:06 <CraigC> Katie šŸŒ», same, 4 or 5 bottles of peanut butter :)
11:29:10 <Kat> Katie šŸŒ», I am the same way! Sometimes I call it overpacked!
11:29:19 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Power is out at OF and cam is being run by generator. Power issues may be with us this week.
11:29:20 <LindaG> Kat, :D
11:29:25 <6> Imagine if you are camped at Madison but went to West for supplies! You are really stranded
11:29:40 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, yikes
11:29:56 <CraigC> 6, hopefully they make reasonable exceptions..... hopefully
11:30:04 <6> Iā€™m amazed the cam is a priority
11:30:34 <LindaG> I always carry emergency stuff with me when I go to yellowstone.
11:31:03 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> I had to pay $250 to drive 20 miles a couple of weeks ago. The vehicle I was in get 2.5 gallons to the mile though.
11:31:29 <LindaG> In case my car dies innthe middle of nowhere and it's just me and the bison
11:31:31 <CraigC> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, I'm glad I am not driving a train to go fishing
11:32:00 <6> Having an OF reservation yet not being able to get there and West being sold out will be a bummer for folks for sure
11:32:40 <KorbenC> Going to be sunny and rain is going to decrease, so hopefully things will stop flooding soon
11:33:03 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> I remember in Germany we put 96 gallons of diesel in an M577A1 and it had only gone 12 miles since the last fill up.
11:33:58 <LindaG> Impressive the cam is up
11:34:24 <Kat> LindaG, it is!
11:34:32 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> It is running on generator Linda.
11:34:40 <6> OFVEC posting on GT, so they must have power
11:34:55 <LindaG> It's upnduring a natural disaster but on a good day it has problems lol
11:34:55 <Kat> It's on generator!
11:35:17 <Katie šŸŒ»> *knock on wood*
11:35:33 <LindaG> Fingers crossed
11:36:11 <Kat> Wonder how many people are in the back country?
11:36:53 <Katie šŸŒ»> Kat, I was thinking about that, too.
11:38:01 <Kat> How crazy to get stuck out there, have flooding that you can't get through, praying no lives lost anywhere, flooding is so dangerous!
11:38:34 <Lori S (kerfuff> I have so many online windows open I just clsed everything & started over! reboot
11:38:48 <LindaG> Lori S (kerfuffled), šŸ™‚
11:39:31 <Kat> Late on Bulger - deleted LOL
11:45:10 <Lori S (kerfuff> Town visiter info staff & Board members are eking the lines of traffic to update visitorss
11:45:28 <Lori S (kerfuff> walking
11:45:35 <Lori S (kerfuff> visitor
11:49:34 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Nice OF shot
11:52:35 <Lori S (kerfuff> I am in Facebook jail for too many group losts! lol
11:52:47 <Lori S (kerfuff> posts
11:53:10 <KorbenC> what did you do, lol
11:53:46 <Katie šŸŒ»> she hit the feature buffer, which is intended to keep hijacked accounts from spam posting - it's temporary
11:53:52 <Kat> Thats a lot of people given the situation out there
11:54:04 <Katie šŸŒ»> Kat, no kidding!
11:55:38 <Kat> Guess they just aren't paying attention....
11:56:18 <Lori S (kerfuff> I am sure it's a Spam-bot that blocked me
11:56:36 <Lori S (kerfuff> Katie šŸŒ»,
11:57:22 <linda> ah finally home now
11:57:46 <Kat> Red Lodge https://www.facebook.com/prerogativekitchen/photos/a.281569435782158/1129630167642743/
11:58:09 <linda> had my eyes dilated so this is tough to read on laptop, phone was easier
11:59:43 <LindaG> Kat, oh my! I actually know someone that live in Red Lodge hope they are ok
12:00:42 <LindaG> how come turban but no GT grand prediction
12:01:10 <KorbenC> nobody entered the last Grand/ we missed the last Grand
12:01:43 <LindaG> KorbenC, KorbenC, it looks like it was input on gt
12:01:55 <LindaG> last interval 6h 4m
12:02:00 <Kat> Grand times were way apart this AM - it was probably missed, last time posted was 2334
12:02:47 <LindaG> the firehole river is moving down there!i
12:04:58 <Ryan> Goodness
12:05:03 <Ryan> its up over the meadow
12:05:35 <LindaG> I wonder if the area has ever flooded
12:07:17 <Katie šŸŒ»> Look at the "roadblock" at North Entrance
12:08:32 <LindaG> foggy but washburn looks like it snow on it
12:09:05 <LindaG> lake looks nice
12:09:21 <Kat> Katie šŸŒ», and someone is walking in!
12:09:42 <LindaG> west looks open
12:09:59 <Kat> No - look the other way
12:10:01 <Katie šŸŒ»> Firehole meanders through meadows where it can spill without much drama - around basin, anyway. I bet it's roaring through the canyon ("why is swimming hole closed")
12:10:23 <Ryan> I'd pay money to see a photo of Canyon
12:10:26 <LindaG> guess not that
12:10:37 <Kat> LindaG, ;)
12:10:40 <LindaG> Ryan, yeah that would be nice
12:10:52 <Katie šŸŒ»> Look toward Arch - they parked pickups with trailers such that they block the road
12:11:16 <Katie šŸŒ»> Several people there - maybe stopped the walker?
12:11:56 <Kat> They should - walking in to see is crazy!
12:12:32 <Lori S (kerfuff> LindaG, hope they arent right in town
12:12:34 <LindaG> I had reseravtions for the week after next and I tried to fit into vacation schedule and gave up. I'm glad I did.
12:12:42 <Kat> People are so persistent!
12:14:07 <LindaG> no means no!
12:14:13 <Lori S (kerfuff> Ryan, how much? :D
12:14:22 <LindaG> :D
12:14:35 <LindaG> Lori S (kerfuffled), don't pick up on the challenge lol
12:14:43 <Kat> LindaG, unless your 2 yo!
12:15:05 <LindaG> :)
12:15:50 <Ryan> At least $2
12:15:57 <Ryan> $4 if its from the brink.
12:16:23 <Lori S (kerfuff> I mean once the gate reopens lol
12:17:04 <Lori S (kerfuff> Ryan, i think the brink is likely closed!
12:18:27 <Ryan> That's why I'd pay twice as much! ;)
12:18:35 <Katie šŸŒ»> This blue sky is such a tease! Looks like a great day on screen. But with 92% humidity and 15MPH wind, it would be chilly. But looks great on screen.
12:19:15 <Lori S (kerfuff> Ryan, ;)
12:20:30 <Kat> Ryan, here you go - now pay up! https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10222124727728751&set=pcb.1125284851536080
12:21:04 <LindaG> Kat, Wowee!
12:21:22 <Kat> Definitely deceiving!
12:21:47 <Ryan> That's two days old... fake news!
12:22:00 <Ryan> It is very impressive though.
12:22:07 <Kat> hahaha - pay half! It's still good!
12:22:33 <Ryan> It is worth at least $0.75, I'll give ya that :P
12:22:41 <Lori S> Ryan, you didnt stipulate a photo taken TODAY
12:22:52 <Kat> Thx Lori
12:23:32 <Ryan> Spoken like a politician!
12:23:43 <LindaG> ;)
12:24:35 <Lori S> Ryan, :p
12:26:18 <Kat> https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=3280845802151998&set=pcb.3252602311674547
12:27:00 <Kat> Pics at Yellowstone RV Park
12:27:24 <Ryan> Are those small waterfalls running off the scoured bank?
12:27:30 <LindaG> :-/
12:27:44 <Ryan> I dont mean this, truly, in any negative way: but was this a surprise?
12:28:06 <Ryan> Was there any warning in the last few days? I was off the grid, so to speak.
12:28:10 <Katie šŸŒ»> Not a surprise to me and others who have been saying this was coming - but the EXTENT is still a surprise
12:28:32 <Kat> https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=3280845802151998&set=pcb.3252602311674547 Yankee Jim Canyon
12:28:35 <Lori S> Ryan, I thought that way back when they firstvput it in. I eas guiding at the time so a LONG time ago.
12:28:37 <KorbenC> well the majority of the rain is done at least
12:28:38 <Ryan> Gotcha. Seemed a bit too big to be truly unexpected.
12:28:43 <Katie šŸŒ»> There weren't any real warnings issued. Flooding was expected, but not this
12:28:44 <LindaG> Ryan, I was thinking the same thing but I haven't been paying attention to the weather really
12:29:18 <KorbenC> Kat, both of those links are the same?
12:29:32 <Lori S> KorbenC, no, rain is still in our forecast
12:29:42 <LindaG> It does look like water running off the banks
12:30:00 <Katie šŸŒ»> More rain + more snowmelt. This event isn't over
12:30:07 <Kat> The banks are washed out!
12:30:12 <Ryan> Katie, when ground saturation and precip both surpass records at the same time it is hard to predict exactly what will happen, for sure.
12:30:24 <Ryan> Looks like power is back at Norris.
12:30:33 <Kat> KorbenC, second one was video and it's not working -sorry
12:31:06 <KorbenC> Lori S, yes, but what I am saying is that the heavy rain is over; some spots got inches of rainfall yesterday, there is not going to be any rainfall to that extent again with this system
12:31:16 <Katie šŸŒ»> Delayed , then accelerated snowmelt runoff coinciding with the rain... that's the major cause.
12:31:46 <LindaG> video of carbella bridge floating down river on facebook
12:32:13 <Ryan> True. I just meant that when the ground gets super saturated and then another round of water is injected the ground does weird things: rockfalls, landslides, etc
12:32:22 <Katie šŸŒ»> For sure
12:32:34 <Ryan> Then when the ground moves, water goes places it normally doesn't and chaos ensues.
12:32:49 <Ryan> Seems like critical mass was reached last night into the morning, then?
12:32:52 <Lori S> LindaG, the floor guy just asked if Carbella and Tom Miner are same bridge?
12:33:39 <Kat> https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10200172645255079&set=gm.3283583451917797 Soda Butte Creek
12:34:10 <Ryan> Kat, content not available :(
12:34:12 <LindaG> Lori S, video says a view of carbella from tom miner bridge
12:34:18 <Ryan> I suspect it is not really a "creek" though
12:34:34 <Kat> Ryan, comes up for me
12:34:41 <Lori S> Ryan, the south end of gibbon meadows was already flooding about 1900 last night per the floor guy
12:34:58 <Ryan> Is that "not normal"?
12:35:13 <LindaG> Kat, wow such damage
12:35:37 <LindaG> Lori S, 'the floor guy' lol
12:35:43 <Lori S> Ryan, is that ? for me?
12:35:55 <Ryan> Yeah, RE: Gibbon Meadows
12:36:05 <Ryan> Also, can someone try to direct link that image?
12:36:15 <Lori S> LindaG, He forsnt want his name used in here or on gt anymore.
12:36:32 <LindaG> Lori S, I know :)
12:37:18 <Lori S> Ryan, Well, it floods in Spring then goes down
12:37:44 <Lori S> But it didnt flood this spring so not sure
12:38:06 <Ryan> Ok. When I say "critical mass" I mean to the point where unprecedented things begin to happen.
12:38:15 <Katie šŸŒ»> Look at the photo Trent just posted in Hub - https://www.facebook.com/groups/YellowstoneInsidersHub/permalink/1126728554725043/
12:38:30 <Lori S> But the torrential rain sped up the snow melt so the question is tricky
12:38:50 <Ryan> Katie - Woah.
12:39:50 <Ryan> Lori - a critical point would be reached in different areas at different times. Depends on local geology, hydrology, and weather - etc. Seems like everywhere kind of hit it all over night and into the morning.
12:39:53 <LindaG> now highway 89 is closed to all traffic from Emigrand MT
12:40:04 <LindaG> *Emigrant
12:40:27 <Katie šŸŒ»> Ryan, critical mass, indeed!
12:40:44 <KorbenC> Ryan, some Rivers in YNP have already started to drop
12:40:51 <Ryan> Yeah that photo of SBC is unbelievable.
12:40:58 <Lori S> Katie šŸŒ», Whoa on Trent's photo. Eek.
12:41:03 <LindaG> that should be all traffic south from Emigrant MT
12:41:27 <Ryan> KC - yeah, but any rain at this point will just run them right back up. Ground has no ability to soak it up before it runs off.
12:41:54 <Ryan> Even if it is a minor amount of rain, it's all going to be negative for quite a while.
12:42:29 <Katie šŸŒ»> There is still a lot of snow left to melt, too. It's not just precipitation that is an issue - that's just part of the equation.
12:43:04 <Katie šŸŒ»> And slides can happen well after the saturating eveng
12:43:08 <Katie šŸŒ»> *event
12:46:46 <Kat> Now at North they are lined up behind the trucks LOL
12:47:35 <Katie šŸŒ»> "but I planned this trip a year ago"
12:47:54 <Katie šŸŒ»> I can imagine the frustration - and they can't go north to Livingston & out...
12:47:58 <CraigC> weather; "hold my beer"
12:48:26 <Kat> Bet there are no accommodations in west! CraigC, LOL
12:49:00 <Katie šŸŒ»> "you can't get there from here"
12:49:03 <CraigC> Kat, yeah, people are probably headed to rexburg and idaho falls
12:49:10 <Kat> Katie šŸŒ», wonder how many are sleeping in the car tonight?
12:50:29 <Kat> I think they moved the turn around point at west
12:50:56 <Katie šŸŒ»> check this out: https://www.facebook.com/groups/YellowstoneInsidersHub/permalink/1126735824724316/
12:51:42 <Kat> I was trying to post this but it wouldn't let me for some reason
12:53:00 <LindaG> Katie šŸŒ», The video from Red Lodge is scary too
12:53:33 <LindaG> daisy
12:54:54 <Dave from Bā„¢> Good afternoon everyone. Please don't blame this on me.
12:55:10 <Dave from Bā„¢> Seeing Tom Miner Bridge going downstream is crazy
12:55:19 <LindaG> Dave from Bā„¢, lol we already did
12:55:24 <CraigC> sorry, we blame everything on Dave as default
12:55:30 <Kat> It's all crazy!
12:55:34 <Katie šŸŒ»> Dave from Bā„¢, :):):):)
12:55:38 <LindaG> Is it Tom miner or Carbella
12:55:50 <Dave from Bā„¢> I should have been here earlier to defend myself
12:56:05 <Dave from Bā„¢> Linda G, that is one and the same
12:56:13 <LindaG> Dave from Bā„¢, ahhhh
12:56:16 <Kat> Yes - before all the NPS texts and FB postings!
12:56:25 <CraigC> Dave from Bā„¢, no, we are less abusive now.... we vented most of it out
12:56:38 <Dave from Bā„¢> haha
12:56:59 <Kat> CraigC,
12:57:54 <Larry in Denver> I never thought I'd be saying that I'm now glad I had to cancel my reservations in Silver Gate and Mammoth for this week.
12:58:11 <CraigC> Larry in Denver,
12:58:22 <Katie šŸŒ»> Larry in Denver, yup - good timing
12:58:35 <Kat> Larry in Denver, no way in and no way out!
12:58:40 <KorbenC(maybe T> I might cancel my reservations and start looking for July, lol
12:58:55 <Dave from Bā„¢> Has anyone seen pictures of Cooke City, Silver Gate or other damage inside YNP besides Gardner Canyon?
12:59:26 <Larry in Denver> I was so sad to cancel because it was a consolation trip for two prior trips cancelled due to Covid and staffing issues.
12:59:31 <LindaG> Dave from Bā„¢, kat posted a silver gate pic above somehwere
12:59:43 <Dave from Bā„¢> Please make it stop raining WITHOUT having temps go into the 90s
12:59:48 <Katie šŸŒ»> Dave from Bā„¢, many - here is an example: https://www.facebook.com/groups/YellowstoneInsidersHub/permalink/1126728554725043/
12:59:57 <Kat> Soda Butte Creek above, and there were a few of Silvergate on FB
13:00:13 <LindaG> Larry in Denver, yeah I had some in two weeks I cancelled, now I'm glad
13:00:19 <Dave from Bā„¢> Wow. Thanks for the link
13:07:19 <LindaG> grand
13:07:25 <LindaG> ,
13:09:12 <Kat> It must be frustrating to have all that blue sky at west and be told to turn around!
13:09:15 <Katie šŸŒ»> I keep losing control access
13:09:30 <Katie šŸŒ»> Not that it matters at the moment...
13:09:42 <Kat> :)
13:12:06 <Dave from Bā„¢> NPS and states are going to home prioritizing what to fix first
13:12:15 <Dave from Bā„¢> home = have fun*
13:13:32 <Katie šŸŒ»> Still weathery up on Washburn
13:15:10 <KorbenC(maybe T> There is no way imma get to the park this weekend :(
13:15:39 <LindaG> :(
13:16:41 <KorbenC(maybe T> I would be impressed if they get any roads open for the next couple of weeks
13:17:17 <Ryan> Unlike minor and elective road upgrades and maintenance I suspect these will be fairly quick fixes. Flooding like this may be uncommon for the area but its not an unknown disaster to have to respond to.
13:18:03 <Larry in Denver> Interesting that someone already updated the status of Tom Miner Bridge: https://bridgehunter.com/mt/park/L3430100003001/
13:18:07 <Ryan> Assuming they pull in resources from other parts of the country, I think the predicted timelines of "months" may be a bit long.
13:18:19 <KorbenC(maybe T> Ryan, yea, but 5 days would be unlikely for any of the entrances to open
13:18:43 <Ryan> Is there any damage south of Norris?
13:19:04 <Ryan> The financial incentive to reopen anything that is not physically destroyed will be quite high.
13:19:31 <KorbenC(maybe T> but still, 5 days isn't that long, and most stuff is probably physically damaged
13:20:09 <LindaG> KorbenC(maybe T-5?), you'd come in south entrance?
13:20:17 <Ryan> My understanding is that the southern half of the park is relatively OK. There are people in the park who need to get out and people will also need to get into it as well.
13:20:27 <KorbenC(maybe T> LindaG, normally yes, but I can get in any entrance if need be
13:20:36 <Larry in Denver> Given all of the special events planned for this anniversary year and the potential increased visitation, this will be a major blow to the plans of many visitors
13:20:39 <LindaG> KorbenC(maybe T-5?), but south may not be too bad
13:20:43 <Ryan> I wouldn't be shocked if the South and West entrances open fairly quickly - perhaps even within a few days.
13:21:04 <Ryan> I thought I heard the East entrance has some issues.
13:21:05 <LindaG> KorbenC(maybe T-5?), that's what you need to determine
13:21:28 <KorbenC(maybe T> LindaG, we are OK getting in from west, south, east, north, ect.
13:21:39 <KorbenC(maybe T> but IDK if 5 days will be enough time to get one of those open
13:22:11 <Ryan> If the roads are not physically wiped out like they are up North I think 5 days would be too long to keep them closed.
13:22:32 <LindaG> rapids on the firehole >(
13:22:33 <KorbenC(maybe T> IDK, I hope
13:22:43 <Ryan> I think the only thing they (may) need to do is inspect the bridges.
13:22:58 <Katie šŸŒ»> Some "repairs" are likely to be done via new routes. I think we will see variable timelines depending on location and scope of project. some will take weeks/months. Some will be rapid.
13:23:15 <KorbenC(maybe T> Ryan, landslides over the road are probably everywhere
13:23:16 <CraigC> I would expect West would open pretty quickly. But the bottleneck is going to suck.
13:23:25 <Katie šŸŒ»> Ryan, yup on bridges - and until slopes are deemed stable, nothing will happen
13:23:33 <KorbenC(maybe T> but people are still coming out of West, so it has to be at least somewhat clear
13:23:34 <Katie šŸŒ»> CraigC, for sure!
13:23:45 <LindaG> how many bridges in southern section?
13:23:49 <Ryan> Katie - and I think both of those are very fast procedures.
13:24:05 <KorbenC(maybe T> LindaG, 1 between South and OF, I think the problem will be landslides
13:24:39 <Ryan> Especially if FEMA gets involved. The NPS is a federal agency and should have the resources of the federal government behind it. I think reopening the southern part of the park will be very quick. The north side seems like it will be a crap shoot.
13:25:00 <KorbenC(maybe T> West could be fast, that road tends to be pretty reliable
13:25:05 <Ryan> I wasn't around for the late 80s, but it seems like in many places the damage done today is still less extensive and severe than the fires.
13:25:32 <Ryan> (Again, only talking about the south half of the park.)
13:26:43 <CraigC> my memory isn;t all that great, but only road damage I remember in 88 was along the Gibbon
13:27:07 <CraigC> mudslide if I rmemeber
13:27:20 <Ryan> I mean, think about it. The longer nothing can get into the park the more strained everything inside will become. Food needs to get in, supplies, etc. Beyond visitation, if those roads and entrances are truly closed for a week or more there will be some rapidly escalating problems for park infrastructure.
13:27:59 <Ryan> It will be in everyone's best interest to get things assessed, fixed, opened, and operating as soon as absolutely possible. They probably started logistical planning thing morning - if not last night.
13:28:01 <Dave from Bā„¢> There has been talk about moving the road out of Gardiner Canyon for decades. I wonder if this event will result in road eventuaqlly move out of the canyon
13:28:05 <Kat> https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/news/220613.htm
13:28:33 <Dave from Bā„¢> It has to stop raining too
13:28:51 <KorbenC(maybe T> Sounds like South side is having problems
13:29:14 <CraigC> Kat, thanks
13:29:23 <Kat>
13:29:30 <Ryan> Thanks, Kat. Septic systems don't do well with high groundwater levels.
13:29:43 <Ryan> Gonna be lots of honeydippers running into the park :P
13:30:11 <LindaG> Doesn't look good for the southern sections, they are evacuating today
13:30:16 <KorbenC(maybe T> Dave from Bā„¢, rain will probably restart tonight and continue until Wednesday morning
13:30:50 <Ryan> I should have prefaced my statements with "when the rain ends". Thought that was a unneeded comment.
13:31:01 <Ryan> Can't fix anything when the disaster is still occuring.
13:31:13 <KorbenC(maybe T> exactly
13:31:45 <Ryan> I still think once the rain stops the recovery will be very fast in many places.
13:32:00 <LindaG> maybe I should have a vacation contingency plan, I have reservations for Roosevlt end of august :(
13:32:44 <Kat> I really think that actions at this time revolve around isolated communities and ensuring safety. The rest will involve a thorough assessment of damage, and stability of areas that don't appear to have damage and infrastructure. not going to happen quickly!
13:33:30 <LindaG> yeah they look to save lives first
13:34:11 <9> Helping folks in Gardiner and Cooke City will be a priority
13:34:32 <Ryan> I suspect there are a lot of resources available, I'd be a bit surprised if there wasn't a multi-pronged approach to the response.
13:34:34 <Dave from Bā„¢> I'm assuming power is out in many parts of the park? Is that, correct?
13:34:58 <Ryan> For most natural disasters the response is usually multi-pronged and simultaneous.
13:36:49 <Katie šŸŒ»> Dave from Bā„¢, yes. As I understand it, this cam is running on generator? Who knows if/when it will be refueled when it runs out.
13:37:12 <9> all inbound traffic closed Tues and Wed at least
13:37:28 <Kat> Ryan, everywhere but OF -and last heard they were on generator power
13:37:35 <Dave from Bā„¢> Everyone looks like they are enjoying themselves watching OF
13:37:48 <Ryan> For instance, they can't assess damage to internal infrastructure, or save lives and evacuate, until the roads are rebuilt enough to support it. I doubt they will wait until all lives are accounted for to start repairs.
13:39:14 <Katie šŸŒ»> Sholly says south end will be evacuated today - NPS announcement
13:39:28 <LindaG> yep
13:39:41 <Ryan> And, honestly, the amount of people and infrastructure involved is fairly small. I know the response was jacked up, but this is a fraction of things like Katrina, Sandy, etc. I personally remain a bit skeptical of the "months" timelines for now.
13:39:43 <Dave from Bā„¢> wow
13:39:54 <LindaG> these people don't look like they know the story :)
13:40:07 <Ryan> Yeah, citing primarily concerns about waste and water systems pending more rain.
13:40:16 <Katie šŸŒ»> Might as well use the time left to them before they get kicked out...
13:40:23 <KorbenC(maybe T> according to GT they have already said the park will be closedo n the 14th and 15th
13:40:48 <LindaG> Katie šŸŒ», yeah if they can't leave might as well watch OF :)
13:40:57 <Kat>
13:40:58 <Dave from Bā„¢> Stillwater Mine workers near Nye also can't get home due to a washout
13:41:26 <9> everyone can still leave
13:41:30 <Kat> LindaG, I agree
13:41:52 <9> if they evacuate OF will be the big question
13:42:42 <LindaG> who is going to put fuel in the generator>
13:43:03 <9> I meant of tourists
13:43:15 <LindaG> I might have an easy shift
13:43:43 <LindaG> 9,
13:45:03 <9> not many gazers there now
13:46:58 <Katie šŸŒ»> would we call that a Lion minor?
13:48:19 <Kat> In some places you can check out but you can never leave! (just a little humor)
13:48:32 <Dave from Bā„¢> Thanks,. Kat:)
13:48:38 <Kat> :)
13:56:50 <KorbenC> uhoh
13:57:24 <LindaG> uhoh what?
13:58:13 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> I am getting close to checking out....
13:58:13 <KorbenC> nvm
13:58:30 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, :-/
13:58:45 <Dave from Bā„¢> Kevin, didn't you hear, Kat? You can't checkout
13:59:00 <laura> Well a year ago today I was on my way into yellowstone. If the park had closed on me I would have added to the flood of water....
13:59:17 <LindaG> LindaG, wow nvm looks serious
13:59:32 <Kat> No - you can check out - you can never leave! LOL
13:59:41 <LindaG> LOL
14:00:05 <laura> So is Old faithful area on generators or do they still have power?
14:00:21 <LindaG> cam on generator
14:01:04 <Larry in Denver> Family seen on north entrance station cam has been discussing their next move for quite a while now.
14:02:24 <laura> Just imagine, you have probably been planning your trip for six months to a year, and Mother Nature throws you a big curveball..
14:02:27 <Kat> Hope they have somewhere to stay
14:02:56 <LindaG> Larry in Denver, >( run away run away
14:03:00 <laura> I guess we would have stopped at Idaho falls and waited to see if the park opened up in a few days
14:03:18 <laura> I've always wanted to visit Craters of the Moon...
14:03:54 <Larry in Denver> And yet folks on the boardwalks seem oblivious to the unfolding situation. But then again, I guess I'd stay out there until they kicked me out.
14:04:30 <Dave from Bā„¢> What are the concerns in the south part of the park?
14:04:39 <laura> What's the power situation at the hotels by old faithful?
14:05:46 <9> I would think the people not staying at OF are making the most of the basin today as they will not be allowed back in tomorrow
14:06:08 <Katie šŸŒ»> Water has risen in this bend just in the last couple hours
14:06:19 <9> and some, that are not attached to their cell phones, probably came in from West early and have no clue what is going on
14:06:29 <9> wow, that is up there
14:06:34 <LindaG> Katie šŸŒ», wow, yeah its up
14:06:47 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Ugh. Forgot this was when Greg was going. :(
14:07:06 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, oh thats right. bummer
14:07:30 <Kat> Last I heard Greg was at Lake
14:07:57 <LindaG> Kat, oh bad timing :(
14:08:06 <9> I wonder what part of the park Lake is considered?
14:08:14 <9> he might be allowed to stay
14:08:15 <Kat> Yep - he posted on FB earlier today
14:08:19 <Dave from Bā„¢> I wonder how many bridges will be lost and how many damaged beyond repair
14:10:04 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Most new bridges should be fine but the older ones may have problems.
14:11:56 <laura> I was just thinking about the shiny new road between Tower and Canyon...be just their luck to have rockslides damage the brand new road
14:12:19 <Kat> Last Lion must have been minor
14:13:25 <LindaG> laura, out by fishing bridge too, maybe the new road there helped stop flooding
14:13:43 <KorbenC> Canyon to Fishing bridge is closed
14:15:28 <Kat> Greg tried to go to OF earlier - was turned around at Madison. Had to convince Ranger to let them go back to Lake!
14:15:50 <KorbenC> Kat, but that section of road is supposedly open?
14:16:06 <LindaG> Kat, wow
14:16:09 <Kat> What section
14:16:15 <KorbenC> Madison to OF
14:16:35 <LindaG> Kat, wonder where ranger wanted him to go, just leave?
14:17:09 <Kat> Just reporting what Greg said.
14:17:21 <KorbenC>
14:17:21 <LindaG> Kat, i know :)
14:17:28 <Kat> Maybe out West
14:18:54 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> Found you a puzzle Linda: https://www.bitsandpieces.com/product/hummingbird-garden-shaped-750-piece-shaped-jigsaw-puzzle?p=9905396&uid=---0uqRBG2vT154dUvl0R56L8vBIpMELv5LjFmbk7Ygn2s_&r=061322BP&utm_source=bulk&utm_medium=email&utm_content=5shipSVpuz&spMailingID=8373744&spUserID=NDMyNDA4OTI0NTI4S0&spJobID=1520250291&spReportId=MTUyMDI1MDI5MQS2
14:19:45 <Kat> And it's on sale LOL
14:20:19 <LindaG> Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ, oh that's beautiful, thanks :)
14:20:29 <LindaG> Kat, :)
14:20:29 <Kat> Family back with Rangers at North
14:20:58 <9> If Canyon to Fishing Bridge is closed, how would Greg get back to Lake?
14:21:08 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> They make good puzzles too.
14:21:19 <9> Odd they did not let him go from Madison to Lake via OF
14:21:21 <Kat> 9, that was earlier today
14:23:02 <9> Madison to OF is not closed, so weird they turned him around
14:23:12 <9> the mysteries of Yellowstone
14:24:07 <9> No Fan and Mortar eruption yet...I am shocked!
14:24:26 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> During a natural disaster confusion rules.
14:28:19 <Dave from Bā„¢> I'm speaking with a friend in Gardiner as we speak. It appears the Point of Rocks Bridge on Highway 89 just north of Carbella Bridge is about to go. That will really strand Gardiner.
14:28:50 <Dave from Bā„¢> I guess East River Road would help
14:29:11 <Katie šŸŒ»> Dave from Bā„¢, I've seen photos of Hwy 89 - it's not passable now.
14:29:50 <Kat> So sad!
14:31:28 <Dave from Bā„¢> Yes, what on the road but a bridge out causes even longer delays when waters recede
14:31:39 <Dave from Bā„¢> what = water*
14:32:31 <Dave from Bā„¢> I finally read the Sholly posts that says the northern park of the park "will be closed for a substantial amount of time"
14:34:25 <LindaG> Dave from Bā„¢, sad
14:34:33 <Kat> Point of Rocks washing out https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10226430111394587&set=pcb.5448171025201419
14:35:19 <KorbenC> that bridge is definitely impassible
14:35:58 <Dave from Bā„¢> Thanks Kat
14:36:19 <Kat> Dave from Bā„¢, yw
14:36:36 <Larry in Denver> Live river cam in Gardiner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQAhGs0wHuY
14:36:37 <Dave from Bā„¢> I wonder what will happen in Livingston to Billings area once the crest hits those areras
14:37:06 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> If the foundation stays solid they can fix it quickly. If that abutment goes, it will be a while.
14:37:36 <Dave from Bā„¢> Thanks, Larry
14:38:49 <Dave from Bā„¢> I'm glad my daughter sold her place in Blgs near the river about 2 years ago
14:39:34 <LindaG> I love water, but wouldnt live too close to it
14:40:08 <LindaG> I guess the family decided what to do
14:41:22 <Kat> They are preparing meals and telling folks they can come to the church for dinner or to sleep in Gardiner. All hands on deck so to speak!
14:41:22 <Dave from Bā„¢> Per MT 511, highway 89 is now closed from Livingston to Gardiner...the entire stretch.
14:41:35 <Kat> Dave from Bā„¢, wow!
14:42:52 <LindaG> Kat, that's good
14:44:04 <Larry in Denver> Can you use 540 to bypass the Point of Rocks bridge?
14:44:11 <Dave from Bā„¢> Thats 4 orders we can't get to customers tomorrow
14:44:25 <Kat> Dave from Bā„¢, sorry
14:44:29 <Dave from Bā„¢> East river Road is also completely closed
14:45:04 <Dave from Bā„¢> I fell bad for businesses in these communities. They have only a few months to make money and now this happens. We'll be fine.
14:45:07 <LindaG> road between fishing bridge is closed to all traffic both north and south
14:45:24 <LindaG> can't type, road between fishing bridge and canyon junction
14:46:06 <Larry in Denver> But presumably if the bridge is out for a while for repairs they could use East River Road temporarily when it is re-opened.
14:47:28 <Kat> Who's on cam?
14:47:39 <LindaG> katie
14:47:46 <Katie šŸŒ»> me
14:47:49 <Dave from Bā„¢> I have a feeling the East River Road may have older bridges than the main highway but I am just specualting
14:48:10 <Dave from Bā„¢> Nothing over the Yellowstone except neat Livingston but lots of smaller creek brdiges
14:48:16 <Kat> Oh, sorry didn't know Duh!
14:49:27 <Kat> I've been sitting here watching GT screen loop! So dumb!LOL
14:49:40 <LindaG> Kat, >(
14:49:48 <Larry in Denver> Taking a quick look at the road on Google Earth it does get close to the river bank in places but no serious bridges seen
14:53:17 <Jeff> Got word about an hour ago all general stores are closed for at least rest of today
14:53:38 <Katie šŸŒ»> Park notice - closed at least through Thursday
14:54:00 <KorbenC> Katie šŸŒ», including Thursday?
14:54:58 <Katie šŸŒ»> Not yet
14:55:00 <LindaG> Jeff, oh no
14:55:10 <LindaG> Jeff, I forgot about you
14:55:15 <KorbenC> Katie šŸŒ», okay, "yet" probably the key word
14:58:20 <Ryan> Katie, your post on FB was spot on. "This went from interesting, to devastating real quick."
14:59:46 <Dave from Bā„¢> Unless I was "deaf", it seems like no warnings for all this. Is that true?
15:00:30 <Ryan> Watershed responses to heavy influxes of water are very hard to predict.
15:00:47 <Ryan> Given the amount of water, I dont think anyone really expected this to happen the way it did.
15:03:44 <Ryan> Ok legit that is not me.
15:04:00 <Ryan> I know I have been in here with two names before but I want to be very clear that is not me.
15:04:50 <Jeff> Just got word that all general stores are closed through at least Wednesday with no word yet on Thursday
15:04:53 <Dave from Bā„¢> I just saw the Yankee Jim video. wow... it could be months
15:05:36 <Kat> I just read that the road through Gardiner Canyon is completely gone!
15:06:29 <Larry in Denver> link?
15:06:49 <Dave from Bā„¢> I wonder how the old Gardiner to Mammoth road is doing
15:07:00 <Katie šŸŒ»> Kat, OMG! I've been afraid of that.
15:07:52 <Kat> https://www.facebook.com/groups/640111456007424 It is in a thread on Mammoth Gardiner Community FB page
15:07:57 <Larry in Denver> Given that the Xanterra food warehouse is in Gardiner, this will turn an existing short staffing problem into a logistical nightmare for Xanterra and park visitors
15:09:08 <Kat> Still a lot of folks at OF
15:15:54 <LindaG> posted on GTNP facebook page Need a spot to camp tonight? The Teton County Fairgrounds is temporarily available for use tonight, Monday, June 13, 2022 for those impacted by the closure of Yellowstone National Park.
15:18:42 <Dave from Bā„¢> Graham has just let me know that lodging is closing immediately
15:19:05 <LindaG> Dave from Bā„¢, where are they going to go?
15:19:11 <9> Makes sense
15:19:18 <KorbenC> Dave from Bā„¢, how long?
15:19:21 <9> the fairgrounds?
15:19:31 <Kat> Oh my!
15:19:50 <9> sorry, not funny. Bozeman is already warning of low availability
15:20:06 <9> My guess is Idaho will be their best bet
15:20:28 <Kat> Bozeman telling people to go west...
15:20:59 <Dave from Bā„¢> Have you heard of any closures via East Entrance?
15:21:09 <9> I have seen that Pahaska Teepee is closed, no other word about east entrance
15:21:15 <Kat> I would be heading home!
15:21:51 <LindaG> Kat, for sure
15:22:05 <9> I know West is trying to get city camping allowed for one night, if they close Madison, which I am guessing they will, that is displacing a LOT of people
15:22:26 <Dave from Bā„¢> Graham is trying to decide east vs south
15:22:42 <9> South, head home
15:22:58 <Kat> I would say south for sure!
15:23:24 <9> I wonder what availability is in Cody?
15:23:45 <Jeff> My guess is not much
15:24:07 <9> Jeff can you stay?
15:24:11 <LindaG> I'd go south, fishing bridge has got to be flooded, no?
15:24:32 <9> it is still open as of now, Fishing Bridge to East
15:25:03 <Jeff> 9, we have not been given any word to evacuate from OF as of right now
15:25:26 <9> I am wondering how they will get the day tourists out, like herding cats
15:25:40 <9> I hope you can stay put
15:26:07 <Kat> Well, there's only so many ways they can go with road closures!
15:26:25 <Jeff> I got some stuff packed up to get me through a few days if we get word to bug out
15:26:25 <9> yes, getting them all to their cars and such
15:26:41 <Jeff> Plus all the people in the back country
15:26:42 <LindaG> Jeff,
15:26:47 <Dave from Bā„¢> 9, grab a megaphone!
15:26:58 <Kat> I worry about hikers!
15:27:07 <9> I hope back country folks are OK. Stream crossings could be very dangerous
15:27:25 <Dave from Bā„¢> I hope no lives are lost in this disaster
15:27:26 <Kat> That's my thought too!
15:27:28 <9> Dave from B, I am sure they will be using megaphones
15:28:30 <9> think if you left OF for Lake or south, and do not get back until dark. I hope they let those folks stay until tomorrow
15:28:45 <9> so many contingencies
15:29:17 <Kat> Folks in Jardine have wells and are offering to let people fill their containers.
15:29:39 <Larry in Denver> Madison Junction area flooding video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVnPR75PqLw
15:29:48 <9> Gardiner is in for some tough times
15:29:56 <Betty> hi all
15:30:09 <LindaG> Betty, hi
15:30:13 <Larry in Denver> Hi Betty
15:30:56 <Kat> Wow!
15:30:59 <LindaG> Betty, you have some catching up to do
15:31:33 <Betty> hi LindaG, Larry in Denver, Kat
15:31:40 <laura> Jeff what's the power situation at the hotels in the OF area? I know the visitor center is on generators
15:32:25 <Kat> Hi Betty!
15:33:50 <Dave from Bā„¢> Well. I'm out of here. Have a good evening everyone. Time to spend a few hours watching the news tonight and see what damage will occur along the rest of the Yellowstone. Stay safe and pray for everyone
15:34:09 <Kat> Bye dave
15:34:33 <Betty> hi and bye Dave from Bā„¢
15:34:54 <LindaG> Dave from Bā„¢, night
15:34:58 <Larry in Denver> Have a good evening Dave.
15:35:00 <Dave from Bā„¢> My heart aches for everyone effected by this
15:35:36 <Kat> :(
15:35:42 <laura> I wonder what the upper and lower falls in the Grand canyon of the Yellowstone look like right now...
15:36:17 <Katie šŸŒ»> NPS video of Gardner Canyon: https://fb.watch/dDpRgl-5T8/
15:37:12 <LindaG> Katie šŸŒ», and there was a car down there
15:37:45 <Kat> I saw that
15:37:54 <laura> That is bad. Multiple washouts
15:38:11 <LindaG> yeah that car is going nowhere, hopefully they walked out of there
15:38:28 <laura> This reminds me of the 1987 floods in Yosemite Valley. The park was closed for nearly three months
15:39:03 <Katie šŸŒ»> I'll be happy if it's only 3 months
15:39:27 <KorbenC> That road isnt going to be open for a very long time, hopefully a different story for the rest of the park
15:39:34 <laura> Record snowfall during November and December and then a warm, atmospheric river storm that dumped tons of RAIN on the high elevations
15:39:43 <laura> Melting all the snow
15:39:44 <Betty> oh wow, thatĀ“s crazy
15:40:06 <Kat> Looks like a dozer that was moving rocks
15:40:30 <laura> It was like the spring snowmelt that normally takes weeks happened in 48 hours
15:41:25 <Larry in Denver> That car looked like a classic open touring car
15:41:52 <Kat> there's someone walking along the road too about 2/3 into video
15:42:27 <Larry in Denver> That damage is so typical of what we've seen here on Colorado along the foothills. The roadbed is just scoured away on the outside of curves in the river.
15:42:30 <LindaG> Looks like a long walk
15:47:01 <Kat> Making a plan to get visitors and others out of Gardiner is going to be difficult to say the least!
15:47:45 <LindaG> Kat, someone on the page suggested residents not run to grocery because that was limited and visitors would need it
15:49:45 <Kat> They are already out of water!
15:52:52 <Larry in Denver> Is it just a freak of the lighting or did the roadway at the north entrance station just get painted white?
15:52:56 <Kat> Camper at West
15:54:07 <9> hopefully once water recedes in Yankee Jim area, the road will still be there
15:54:08 <KorbenC> camper got in?
15:54:21 <9> otherwise they will have to fly in goods
15:54:29 <Larry in Denver> Ah, it's back to normal. The cam must have messed up.
15:54:35 <9> does Gardiner have an airport?
15:54:48 <Kat> Looks like it! They won't get far!
15:54:48 <9> Employees are still being allowed thru gate
15:55:46 <LindaG> i guess it's my turn, I'll sign in
15:56:23 <Kat> Thanks for driving Katie!
15:56:26 <Katie šŸŒ»> 4:00 already?!
15:56:49 <Katie šŸŒ»> I would say "happy driving" but there is no happy today
15:56:51 <Kat> Let us know what you hear on local news
15:57:01 <Kat> Katie šŸŒ», true
15:57:05 <LindaG> Katie šŸŒ», :(
15:58:45 <LindaG> loading
15:59:46 <LindaG> hmmmm

16:09:04 <LindaG> those guys snuck in
16:09:10 <Katie šŸŒ»> What the what
16:09:11 <Jeff> 2 people off boardwalk at bee
16:09:27 <LindaG> i guess they were officials, I don't know
16:09:42 <Katie šŸŒ»> hard to tell - rain gear or vests?
16:10:02 <Katie šŸŒ»> calling VEC just in case
16:10:14 <Kevin Lā„¢ šŸŒµ> I usually notify VEC just in case.
16:10:15 <LindaG> they are going to get wet
16:10:29 <Katie šŸŒ»> VEC isn't answering - surprise!
16:11:05 <Kat> Call LE
16:11:35 <Katie šŸŒ»> straight to vm
16:11:38 <LindaG> i hate to zoom on them if they are officials
16:11:41 <0> they are working on that device they left a few weeks ago at bee
16:14:18 <Kat> https://www.facebook.com/100001762666165/videos/389569856536247 House in Gardiner on River
16:15:32 <LindaG> Kat, yikes!
16:17:31 <DougB> wow

16:20:20 <LindaG> lb
16:23:01 <LindaG> all gone
16:28:08 <LindaG> wow daisy early
16:28:45 <Kat>
16:29:15 <LindaG> 1hr 44m
16:38:09 <Jeff> Just got told from my store manager is the park wants no employees on boardwalks, hiking or even doing events at the rec centers
16:38:41 <LindaG> Jeff, guess they don't want people to see people out and about
16:38:51 <0> Hi Jeff what is your current situation??

16:42:02 <0> How can you tell the difference of employee from a tourist? Is there a large E tattoed on their forehead??
16:43:37 <Jeff> I think most employees (at least from dnc) usually have their employee ID on them
16:47:16 <0> Bill says to Sally, there is a person lets ask them to show their ID.
